My great-grandparents were born in Lithuania, migrated to Scotland & finally to Westmoreland County, PA. I do not know the Lithuanian name of my grandfather, Charles Cheskey. On my great-grandmothers death it list her name as Ciciliya Cizauskiene. Her father is listed as George Kalinski...her mother is Madaline Ostroski.

Can anyone help me with surnames in Lithuania. Has anyone's ancestors come from Lithuania through Scotland to the US?

Adomas Satneris married Elena Vymezyte (Helene Wiemer) in Geistorischken Kreis, Vilkaviskis in 1884.

Adomas Satneris' father: Augustas Satneris
Adomas Satneris' mother: Emilya Keiteryte (Emilie Keiter)
Elena Vymezyte's father: Motiejis Vymezis/Vymeris (Matthaus Wiemer)
Elena Vymezyte's mother: Ona Keleztoite (Anna Kehlert)

I have been led to believe that their two families originally came from Germany in 1790s.

Any one related or have any information?

My grandfather was Otto Newman changed from Neumann after he arrived here. He immigrated from Lithuania to the USA around 1908. He married Anna, (born 1887 in Lithuania) around the same time as they immigrated. They had 5 children together and she died in her 40's. Not sure of her maiden name, perhaps they are the same person as Anna Rupkalvis?

Thank you Tom!

My great grandfather Anthony Lazauskas was born in Baragine. It is a very small village north east of Marijampole.

The birth of my great grandmother Elena Plioplis is still a little foggy. Her naturalization papers say she was born in Petravine, while Anthony's papers indicate the village was Yelanka. I can't find either village, but I'm hoping a researcher can sort it out.

Scott

My search has led me to believe that Dunn/Cohen families are from Zasliai, Lithuania. Israel (James) Dunn married about 1880 in Lithuania to Minda Cohen the daughter of Tzvi. 5 children were born between 1881-1889: Charles(Israel) 1881, David 1883, Elizabeth(Elak) 1885, Ida(Naie) 1886, and Frances(Feigi) 1888. Israel immigrated 1889 and Minda immigrated 1893. Minda died 1913 in Manhattan and Israel Dunn died 1931 in Bronx. Israel Dunn/Donn father is Isaak Donn and his mother is Bessie(Elizabeth) Bernstein. Minda Cohen had 5 siblings that immigrated to New York: Sarah Cohen married Lifshitz, Max Cohen married Dora Vinitsky, Rebecca Cohen married Dorman, Ida Cohen married Friedland, and Hannah/Anna married Kronenberg.

Just wondering if anyone can help with records from there areas. Like many, all I have are a few family stories passed down through the years and some naturalisation records which gave more questions than answers really!

Looking for information regarding ancestors of Kalman Harris in Lithuania. Facts ascertained: Naturalised in 1902. States that name is Colman Harris formerly known as Mendle. Born on 6th Sivan 1848 in Kellam gubernia KOVNO, Russia, parents Ber and Beila Sarah Mendle, Russian subjects. Kalman's son, Hyman, was naturalised in 1907. He states his name is Hyman Harrishovitz, known as Hyman Harris and that his father adopted the name Harris on arrival in UK for business purposes, Harris being easier to pronounce. Further, his grandfather's surname was Mendle and when his father (Kalman Harris) married he called himself Harrishovitz. Hyman says he was born in Kovno in June 1874. Kalman's wife is named as Sarah Rebecca, (known by some in the family as Sorah Rivka). Kalman's other children are: Leah, Annie, Yetta, Abraham, Simon all born in Russia, Yetta having "Sibau" (?) written in pencil on her 1911 census return after Russia as place of birth.

Have no idea how to go about starting research in Lithuania, so any ideas / tips gratefully received! Have done a look up on family search.org and they appear to have some Kovno / Kaunas records but I have no idea if these records are in Hebrew or Russian or if they are translated or if it is worth taking a look at them? Has anyone found someone to undertake research in Lithuania on their behalf?

Hi Vince
I spoke to you before some years back on another family history website. I have been trying to get more details of the 'Prank' family for 30 years and just keep hitting brick walls. I even contacted a Register office in Russia to see if I could get some certificates but they wanted so much information that I didn't have and also a lot of money so that was a dead end.The problem I think is that they seemed to change their names often for whatever reasons. The only hope is that some relative still has some old paperwork that may be a help, Sue

Ah! The dates and names are all similar but the locations are not quite consistent with my Nathan. We knew him as Karnovitz or Karnovitch but he changed his name to Greemspan in order to relocate to Palestine but later relocated to St. Louis around 1923. His mother was Sarah, who was his real mother. I think his father's name was David (now that I recall). They all lived in Aishishuk and his mother immigrated to the U.S. in the 1930s when there were warning of mass executions by the Nazis, leaving behind her family (except Nathan) who were all executed in the famous massacre in Sept., 1941. So ... no violinists in our family after all. That explains a few things LOL!

Yes. Zelig's father was Joseph (don't confuse with another Joseph of the same family, only younger), whose father was Pincus (at least we think so, although there is some evidence he might actually have been a brother). Anyway, Zelig (who went by the name 'John') may have traded names or some such thing on his way to America. He was born around 1850 something and died in Palestine in the 1930s. He had quite few children who were born in Pittsburgh. (FYI: Zelig means 'Holy' in Yiddish and Hebrew). It reminds me a bit of Woody Allen's 1983 hit, Zelig, about a guy who would change identities to fit his surroundings LOL!

That's interesting, that makes sense (or as much sense as changing names to Broida does...Zelig is at least easier to spell!). I've never heard about John Zelig before, though my exploration has pretty much ended at the great-great-grandparent leve.
If you find anything else out about the name change or anything else interesting, I'd love to know.

Thank you very much for your reply. I'm not sure that my uncle Nyusha was connected with your family. I do know that he emigrated to America in about 1923. I found a document in 1923 emigration to the Nachum Krainovich. The document stated that Nachum came to his grandfather, whose name was Mr Jacob Broida. Until 1915, my uncle Nyusha lived in Warsaw with his father Yefim, Misha stepbrother and stepmother Sarah. His own mother, to my knowledge, has died, maybe her name was also Sarah. During the war, the family was evacuated to Russia. Nyusha attended secondary school in Moscow. In 1923 he left Russia and came to America. This is all we know about him.

What I learned was that John Zelig (and who knows where Zelig originated), who was the first of our ancestors to immigrate in 1875, was the one who changed the name. Hope to learn more as we investigate the matter using records from Eishishuk and elsewhere. Apparently, however,we are not related to any actual Broida from the area!
" It also seems that Broida was actually Karklinsky before it was changed to Broida (after immigration) but I am still researching that strange connection."

I'm familiar with that name change story as well. It's always been pronouced more "Korkalinksy" in our family, but nobody really knows how it was spelled. The story that I was always told was that when my great-grandfather David (Sarah Broida's brother) came over to Ameria, there was a family by the last name of Broida on the same boat and for whatever reason, the Korkalinskys decided to change their name to Broida during immigration. I'm not sure how true that is, a lot of the stories that were passed down by my grandfater (Herman) have turned out to be less than accurate, but it's the prevailing tale.

I wonder if you are referring to my cousin, "Nathan" Carnovitz (that is one spelling of the surname and it was changed to Greenspan by a Zionist sponsor before Nathan's immigration to Palestine and then St. Louis, MO in 1923.). He was a son of Sarah Broida who was Jacob's eldest daughter. I am Jacob's great grandson. I knew Nathan quite well as he worked as a partner with my grandfather, Max Broida. It also seems that Broida was actually Karklinsky before it was changed to Broida (after immigration) but I am still researching that strange connection.

He subequently moved away from that area and died in Kaunas in 1920. I have no other information on his parents. It is worth noting that Mockunas is not an uncommon surname in the Krincinas area, with several families represented in the local cemetery and in parish records.
