Marina
I only have "Riga, Russia" as a place of birth, unfortunately. Zelma's father being a "farmer," as she stated in her marriage licence suggests it may have been a Parish outside of the city itself. But where? no way to tell. All the people who knew her well are gone.

Julia Roots married Fritz Wendt and returned to "Russia" for the birth of her first child. I have ordered a copy of the birth certificate from England - perhaps there will be clue there.

Thank you so much for taking the time to look for my family.
Cairn

Name Zelma ia , of course, latvian. Among Roots or Murrus are not german familynames too, though there is the German surname Root. I tried to find entries in church books on these people, but found nothing. There is a question, instead of they could be born not in the Riga, and somewhere in other place of Latvia?

Marina

Marina
Aha - the plot thickens? The only documented information I have comes from the marriage certificates of Zelma and Julia (Zelma identified as Lutheran, born in Riga Russia). On the 1910 Canadian census, however, Zelma identifed herself as German from Germany. I understand that Zelma is a Latvian name given to girls born on a certain day in March? but I had not determined the origins of either Roots or Murrus, so thank you for that.
Cairn

My grandmother – Zelma Roots, born Riga, December 1891 and her aunt (father’s sister), Julia Roots, born Riga, 15 October 1875. Zelma’s father (Jacob) was a farmer; her mother’s name was Mary Murrus. Julia’s father (John) was a carpenter. Both Julia and Zelma emigrated to Canada between 1907 and 1910.
Cairn

Hello
I am looking for assistance in identifying the names of the German Lutheran parishes in Riga on the Raduraksti website. My relatives were ethnic Germans born between about 1837 and 1895. Can someone help point to where I might find that information? I understand that I am going to have to scan a lot of pages, but I don’t know where to start.
Thank you
Thanks for the help.I know from my dad about the Milwaukee german papers.
I did find a site Wisconsin Cousins that has obituaries and found the Hilperts and
Steldts listed along with a lot of other people.

I may send for copies of the obits as cousin Reinhold Lilienschild ,grandfather Ferdinand Hilpert and some other kinfolk including Steldts too.
I would like to get to Milwaukee sometime in the future. I know my dad mentioned in the Milwaukee Public Library they had in the restricted or reference section? old german books
about either genealogy or family coats of arms.I recall him saying he saw Hilpert in one of them. Now he never mentioned what the title of any of these books were.
If the oppertunity financially ever presents it's self. I will try to go there in the future.
Despite all the germans around the San Antonio area, i really haven't found much in the genealogy section of the main library downtown.
Maybe during the summer I'll go down there and look again to see if they have any old german books.May also have to go to New Braunfels as well.It was settled by Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels and german colonists. might have better luck with seeing if they have any very old such books on the subject.
I don't have any entries in the current index for Hilpert, Lilienschild or Schuluski (and I use wildcard searches to pick up variations). But the German papers seemed to function as the most "European" of the local papers and there are many examples of other central & northern Europeans using them.

"I am looking for information on my great grandfather Frank Steldt. He was born in Riga in the 1850's 0r 1860's. He was a Prussian Officer and a military observer at the Russian court. He married Emma Krebsch ... They came to America in 1883 or 1884 to Milwaukee, Wisconsin."

There were family death notices published in local German papers for a Frank C. Steldt (1924), and Danksagung (thanks) published by an Emma Steldt after the burial. Also death notices published for an Emma K. Steldt (76 yrs), later on.

There are about 75 occurrences of the name listed in "Milwaukee's German Newspapers; an index of death notices and related items" (1844-1950).
Actually, it is a relatively common name (modern forms Puķītis and Puķīte). Not as common as, say, Bērziņs, Kalniņš or Ozoliņš (the most common Latvian surnames), but it does make appearances in most parishes. It is the diminutive form of "flower". So it is very important to know where in Latvia someone lived if researching someone with this surname.

What were their religions? That will be necessary to know to explore older records.

Knowing their occupations could also help to trace their roots. This should give an idea as to their social class, which can be important, because sometimes records will be divided by social class, so it is important to know where to look in those cases.

Have you put in a request with the International Tracing Service to learn more about Lucija and Ojars' post-war experiences in Displaced Persons Camps? Their records might provide more information on their parents.
Thank you for your reply and what a great site. My knowledge is very sketchy...I have not found immigration records for Elizabeth or Kati Goba, not sure they came at the same time. From the census records, Elizabeth probably immigrated 1907 to New York but can't find her in the 1910 census. She married John Leitt abt 1915 and have found the census from 1920 on. Found nothing on Kati Goba.

John Leitt probably doesn't have immigration papers as (the story goes) he sneaked into the U.S. Anything you can help me with will be appreciated. Thanks, Lindy Wise

Have you found their immigration documents? Items such as passenger lists, naturalization documents, etc.? These will help narrow down the field of where to look for them in Latvian records.

What were their religions? Ethnicities? These are also important to know to be able to find the proper records.

Rozītis is a fairly common surname. It is not in the top 15, but it is in the top 100. I'd say also likely to be in the top 50. Therefore it is imperative to know where your Rozītis ancestors were born, lived, etc. to be able to make all of the connections you're looking for, and even then, be cautious that you don't accidentally fold another family in - especially a hazard if you're dealing with a large city like Rīga where there might have been many families with that name.
