Thanks, Finnmat, for your report. I actually have the church records you mention, supplied to me by a correspondent in Finland. The family later transferred from Ulvila parish to Pori, and emigrated from there. I have Aina's arrival in New York City on 19 Aug 1904 on the S.S. Pretoria, going to join her uncle H or K Ukkonen or Uukkonen at what looks like 151 E 124 St. That's where my information about Aina ends. I'm hoping somebody can shed some light on her situation after arrival.

Hello!
I'm sure I'm a relative too. My name is Elisabeth Öfverholm and I live in Mölndal (very near Göteborg), Sweden. My grandfather on my mother's side, Fredrik Liljekvist, d 1962, had a brother called Werner who emigrated to Amerika. (When I was young Werner lived in Florida with his wife Relda, but I know that he had been married before.)Their sisters were Emelia, Anna and Selma. I think there might have been more siblings, but I'm not sure. The father of Fredrik and his brothers and sisters was Linus Liljekvist, who moved with his family from somewhere just south of Vänern, Sweden's largest lake, to Erikstad, not very far from the Norwegian border. Fredrik was a blacksmith and had his own business in Erikstad. He married Gunhild, 1901 - 1993, and they had four children, Linnea (my mother, b 1922), Gösta, Ingbritt and Karin. Gösta died at the age of 23 and never had any children. Ingbritt married Tore and they had a daughter, Annica, b 1957, and a son, Peter, b 1963. They are both married and have children. Ingbritt died in 1997 and Tore just a few years ago. Karin lives near Malmö, in the very south of Sweden. She is married to Rune and they have a daughter, Maria, and a son, Fredrik, both born in the sixties. Maria's husband is from Cyprus, and they have children. Fredrik isn't married (if he hasn't married recently, without my knowledge). Linnea (my mother) is married to Knut (my father) and they live in Varberg south of Göteborg. They had four children, Agneta, b 1954, Stefan, b 1955, Elisabeth (me), b 1958, and Monica, b 1963. Agneta married Hugo, from Chile. She died in a train accident 1982, at the age of 28. She never had any children. Stefan lives with Inger and they have four children, Jenny, b 1981, Nils and Pontus, b 1983 (twins) and Viktor, b 1987. Nils had a baby son less than two months ago. Monica is married to Pelle and they have three sons, Samuel b 1986, Anton b 1988 and Joel, b 1993. Samuel is married to Lotta and they have three daughters. I married Torsten in 1987 and we had two children, Rebecka, b 1987, and Joakim b 1989. Torsten died in 1996 and in 1999 I married Helge. We have a daughter, Christina, b 2001.
I'm really happy to have found you all on this web site and would really like to know more about my American relatives (and my Swedish ones, as there are many relatives on my grandfather's side that I have never met). /Elisabeth Öfverholm
There is a good explanation of communion books at http://www.genealogia.fi/emi/art/article218e.htm. There are also several other resources about research in Finland, for example https://familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/Finland.

The couple is most likely Daniel's parents but that information should be checked from Daniel's birth record. Let me know you don't find it. You should probably start from the church record archives at http://www.sukuhistoria.fi/sshy/index_eng.htm and you could use also the Hiski search database: http://hiski.genealogia.fi/hiski?en.

Kari

Hi,

I found him in the parish of Pudasjärvi. His birthday was 20 March 1861 and the birth record is here (fourth child from the bottom):
http://www.sukuhistoria.fi/sshy/kirjat/Kirkonkirjat/pudasjar...

It says that his parents were farmer's son Daniel Puurunen and his wife Anna Greta. The family is here in the communion book:
http://www.sukuhistoria.fi/sshy/kirjat/Kirkonkirjat/pudasjar.... It seems that the older name Puurunen was changed to Pihlaja at some point.

I hope this helps
Kari

I am looking for a birth/baptism record for Lauri Lars Petter Pihlaja. Said to be born 20, April 1861 Aittojarvi, Ita-Suomen Laani, Finland. He emigrated in 1882 to Ottertail County, Minnesota, USA where he lived until his death in 1912. He was known as Peter Pihlaja in America. I am sure my spelling of the Province is incorrect, but it is the best i can do. I am hoping to verify that this is the same man. His parents are said to have been Daniel Pihlaja(1827-1896) and Anna Greta Haarahiltunen(1827-1907). I appreciate any assistance as i do not know how to search Finland for records.

Had to dig up other posts where you had Elias and Ebba's wedding date (16 FEB 1851).

Ebba Caisa Andersdotter Kahelin (Ebba Kaisa Antintytär) was born 17 OCT 1824 in a croft called Jokilahti. Her parents were Anders Johansson Kahelin (Antti Juhonpoika Kahelin) b. 10 FEB 1775 and Maria Eriksdotter Rekonen (Maria Erkintytär Rekonen) b. 1789 (most likely 6 APR 1784 in Viitasaari), married 24 JUN 1809.
Ah, yes, I had thought of that, as several of my ancestral lines in Sweden do not have a "technical" surname until much later (1890's, 1900), when they either just kept the father's name (Johansson, for example) or took it from their village or their work.

I do know Sven (or Svante, as he sometimes calls himself, old style) was apprenticed to a Master Zetterbom or Zetterstrom (I forget the exact name at the moment), so he's not taking Cantzoff from him. This doesn't mean, of course, that he didn't adopt Cantzoff from an earlier master. Sven was about 35 with Zetterbom; I would assume he had some experience beforehand.

This opens up another line of inquiry! Thank you so much for taking the time to write. I appreciate all this help and discussion, very much.

Meredith

It's also possible that he didn't have a last name until he became a tailor, which makes finding him even more difficult. Sometimes craftsmen took the last name of the person they were apprenticing with, so that's also a possibility.

Hi Kari --

Thank you so much for your suggestion. I, too, was thinking along those lines and have tried to get some information from the tailor's guild in Stockholm but, as you guessed, it would really take a researcher on-site to dig into those archives. My first record of him, in 1800, notes he is apprenticing as a tailor under a master tailor in the city (living with him as well). But -- nothing about Sven before that date.

I can only assume he would've been admitted to a guild/applied for a license after he finished his apprenticeship, so that does give me a more targeted timeframe.

I am glad to receive some encouragement from someone thinking in a similar direction! Now, how do I get to Stockholm and to Vaasa (to find those missing church records of the time period he was born)? Ha, ha. Thank you again for your time in replying -- you do inspire me to at least search some city court records to see if such things were recorded within.

Meredith

I have one suggestion: since Sven was a tailor in Stockholm he - like all craftsmen - probably needed to apply for a license to do such a work. Such applications might be found in court records or in the city council archives (I don't know exactly what the procedure was in Sweden). The application may contain additional information about eg. where Sven had come to Stockholm, where he was born etc. To research those archives you would probably need some local help in Stockholm though.

Kari

Thank you so much for providing the links! It seems we are flip-flopped: I do have access to some Stockholm records, while you have more access to Finnish ones; I am glad the connection was made. I plan to check the "moving in" records for the earliest known place of residence (in Stockholm) for Sven. He also bounced around a few other parishes in that area, so those, too, are on my list.

Thank you for searching out these records; even though we have not found Sven Cantzoff specifically, I am grateful for the information. In my family, "Cantzoff/Canzov" became "Kantzow" by the next generation or two; this makes the connection to Finnish "Kantzau/Kantzov" even more tempting to make. But I have to face that the original "Cantzoff/Canzov" may have come from somewhere else...

If ever you have any inspirations about where I can search next, please let me know! And I very much appreciate the time you've put in to help me.

Meredith

The couple was married in Pedersöre in 1760, but there was no Sven born there in 1764 or 1766.

Since it looks like children weren't listed until after confirmation, Sven might have moved elsewhere before being listed with the family. Unfortunately the moving records for Mustasaari and Vaasa don't start until after the period we're looking at. If he moved to Stockholm, the records there might have something. I don't have access to those records, though.

Kari --

Thank you so very much! I appreciate you taking time to look. I wonder if I am on the wrong path? I have had no luck at all with "Cantzov" or "Kantzoff" research in Sweden. Sven seems to have begun existence as a man in his early 30's in 1800 Stockholm. And the Kantzov family (the one being uncovered in Mustasaari, Vaasa) seems so close, so possible; I do know at least one of that family came to Stockholm himself.

I wonder if there are any records I can search relating to migration between Finland and Sweden (Stockholm, specifically); I am sure it was quite fluid. Or maybe a search of a tailor's guild or apprenticeships...Sorry, thinking aloud now.

Well, thank you so much again for your help. I will take a good look at the links you sent. I hope to find some clues...

Meredith

You are very kind to share this information with me! Thank you so much.

I have been unable to find any birth or even pre-1799 records for Sven Cantzoff in Sweden; I do feel he must've come from elsewhere and Vaasa seems particularly probable. Such a disappointment that the registers with the exact time frame I am seeking are missing.

On his son's baptism record, Sven has "E" as his middle initial. Ernfrid? Or perhaps just Eric. So tempting to make the jump.

I will eagerly take a look at the communion books for Mustasaari for any clues. Thank you for the link. Would you have any idea of where I should look for moving records for Finland? If I cannot search for his birth, as the books are missing, perhaps I can catch him traveling from Vaasa to Stockholm, where he settled. I also know he was a tailor, but it's unknown whether he apprenticed in Stockholm or perhaps earlier, perhaps in Vaasa.

I am very grateful for your time and help. It's opened up some new possibilities in the search for my family.

Meredith

I believe he was born in Vaasa. There are birth records in Mustasaari (Korsholm) that list a Johan Ernfrid Kantzov and his wife Brita Lisa Granberg:
6.8.1769 9.8.1769 Wasa Fältskrifv. Joh. Unfortunately the births from 1761 to 1767 have not survived. I tried to look for the couple in the Vaasa communion book 1761-1768 without any luck, i only found the apothecarian Kantzov (Johan Christian). Maybe you'll have better luck. You should also check the 1769-1776, 1777-1783 and 1784-1790 books since we know they had another child (who died) in 1785. Here's a link to the books:
http://digi.narc.fi/digi/dosearch.ka?sartun=113882.KA
I am searching for my ancestor Sven Cantzoff/Canzov/Kantzof who someone recently suggested may have been from Finland, possibly the Vaasa area. His birthdate is December 6, 1764 (or 1766) and he was in Stockholm, Sweden as a tailor in 1800. Before that date, I cannot find any record of him.

I had assumed he was born in Sweden and I just couldn't find any records, but a researcher found another individual with a closely similar last name (in the same time period) who was born in Vaasa.

Is this a familiar surname in Finland? How can I do further (online) research in this area? Any information would be much appreciated -- thank you.

I cannot find any company called or owned by Turenius in Tampere in the current phone directory but there is one in Ikaalinen. They seem to be working with real estate, mainly rentals. Not much information available, have no idea if they are related to you or not.

Hi!

Thanks for the suggestion. I was able to find the business on the Internet via a telephone directory. It's still there, but not sure what they do or whether it's still in operation. I suppose I could write them an inquiry letter, but I don't speak/write Finnish. They probably would be suspicious of that anyway, like who's this curious person wanting to know about us? So forget that.

Yes that is what I'm thinking too because the name Pyykko would be pronounced wrong a lot here in the states. So I think my great great grandmother chose Anderson to make it easier for Johan. I did find her ship records where she has Johan listed under Pyykko as well.

Thank you so much for this. I truly appreciate all the help you have done. It hasn't been an easy search for me but you definitely pushed me in the right path. I hope you had a great Easter.

Amelia

No need to contact the parish. FFHA covers Töysä births up to 1904 (1884-1904 for members only). Juho Arvid was born 5 FEB 1891 to Matti Juhonpoika Lehtisaari and Kaisa Ottilia Matintytär. The family moved to Väliaho in 1897. Matti was born 20 MAY 1870 in Töysä and Kaisa Ottilia 7 SEP 1872 in Alavus (according to the communion book, didn't chec the births).

FFHA members can find the birth record here:
http://www.sukuhistoria.fi/sshy/sivut/jasenille/paikat.php?b...

And the family in the 1890-1899 communion book here (Lehtisaari):
http://www.sukuhistoria.fi/sshy/sivut/jasenille/paikat.php?b...

And here (Väliaho):
http://www.sukuhistoria.fi/sshy/sivut/jasenille/paikat.php?b...
Thank you for the quick response. I believe the info is correct as my grandfather John did have a brother Mike and both were sons of Herman. US census data reflects that Mike immigrated to the US in 1981/82. Also, his wife Elizabeth maiden name to be "Pyykonen" asone of their many children's death certificate notes that to be the mothers maiden name. However, data reflects Elizabeth to be born in Luonussalvie Finland.

Who is his child? The above Herman Tulppo who married Anna Nurkkala had a son Mikko, born 18 oct 1864. Mikko immigrated to America. I believe Mikko was Michael Tulppo married to Elizabeth Pykkonen. Michael died in Bruce Crossing, Michigan in 1931.
