Re: Nicodemusen & Hentze

Hello,

I've been doing some family history research and it's been proving a little difficult as the family emigrated from the Faroe Islands around 1890 and I couldn't find a place to search the databases for the Faroe Islands.

However, this evening I had a bit of a breakthrough and it looks like I am sort of related to the Hentze family, in particular Eva nee Olsen. It looks like from the records that I can find that my great great grandmother (Caroline Amalie Olsen) was taken in as a foster child by Eva and her husband Johan Peter Hentze when she was a young girl. The record I have is from 1880 when the parents are 29 years old and they have 2 children: peter hantze, 3 years old; and ole edvard hentze, under a year old. The census is from Sandur. I am guessing that my great great grandmother was her niece and that her parents died when she was young as it says in her marriage certificate that they are both deceased (ole and marianne olsen, although this spelling could be wrong).

I wondered if this tied in at all with your magazine and if you would be willing to share any information that might be helpful, please?

Nicole

A local historical magazine has had several articles on the family history of the island of Sandoy (Sandur being the main village there). It had a complete list of the first Hentze's who came there when Peter Hentze became the local vicar there (his sister came along later). The only 'problem' though, is that it's all in Faroese, and I don't know if you understand/speak it. I have that issue here at my house though.

Sincerely,
Johan Petur Dam

Skúlin in Faroese means 'the school', skúli- being school and -n being the definite article. Some people have nicknames like í Skúlanum (in the school), which means that they probably had another surname, but since they were either relatives, servants or just residence of the local school, they'd get this nickname, since first names at the time were relatively few and very common.

Skúlin btw. is pronounced skew-lyn. (but don't add a y-sound before the ew in the first syllable).

Cheers, Johan Petur Dam

First of all I am so glad I found this!!!!

I am the great grand daughter of Jakup Eliassen. When he moved to Nova Scotia it was changed to John Ellison. He married my great grandmother in 1916 I think who was Whilhelmina Murray from Aberdeen, Scotland. They had a daughter in 1918 named Whilhelmina I think and his wife was pregnant for my grandmother when he died in on a fishing boat in 1920. My grandmother is Olive Ellison (she married a McDonald in the 1930s). My dad is her 5th child (the oldest died as a toddler). My name is Joanne Ellison McDonald and I was named after her. I am the youngest of her grandchildren and she died last July at the age of 91.

I have had such a hard time researching his family since we had very little information to go on and obviously I don't speak Dutch. But I am so glad I found this for the family tree I've been working on for 2 years!

Hi. My maternal family name is Skulin. It is a Slovenian surname pronounced Shkulin. However, if I type this name into google it appears as a common name in scandinavia. What does SKULIN mean in Scandinavian? It seems to be from the Faroe Islands? I would love to know if there is some connection with my maternal ancestor of Slovenia and any scandanavian countries or whether this is just a co-incidence.

Regards from Viv Stepancic Evans (Australia)

He fought at the battle of Belyn.
He wasFfrench and was in a prisoner of war camp in Scotland around 1813, because he fathered a child called Joseph Logree with a Mary Spiers. I believe the prisoner of war camp was at Lauder in Scotland. I do not have any record of their marriage but he returned to France and married and had a family over there. He died in 1840 in Somme.

Hi all

I was just wondering if anyone's done any research on the Hentze's and Nocdemusen's of Sandur. I'm trying to put everything together, but it's proving rather difficult. My grandfather Vilhelm Hentze apparently also had a lot of family in Suðeroy although I know very little about them and my grandmother was Kathrine Nicodemusen. I also have a great grandmother Eva í Skorti who I have a little info on. Any help would be appreciated.

Liz

We have updated our Web page on our search for Michelsen/Mikkelsen/Jorgensen of Torshavn, Faroe Islands, Grenaa, Denmark, and Hals, Alborg, Denmark, with new information from the 1916 census of Hals, Alborg, Denmark.

We have a census from 1916 of Hals, Alborg, Denmark, showing Jorgen M.L. Jorgensen, b. 4-10-1843, and Kirstine Michelsen, b. 28-10-1884 (the widow of Mikael Ferdinand Michelsen/Mikkelsen) and her three children:
Ester, b.10-1-1907; Agnethe, b. 29-1-1908; and Thyge, b. 24-9-1911. Kirstine's maiden name was probably Jorgensen.
Any information on this family would be much appreciated.

We have created a Web page about our search:
http://kennedy.cartama.net/michelsen_jorgensen.htm

Apparently some descendants of this Jorgensen family came to Utah before 1930.

Cindy Kennedy
Charles Brussells
Hi, there.

Am sorry, but that list is just an index from a book, which is about another village here, called Eiði.

I have some info about this man though:

His family is from Fuglafjørður, yes. His father, Eliesar Eliasen was born in 1864 and died in 1950. He married a woman named Anna Jacobsen (1856-?), from the nearby village of Norðragøta (Nordregøthe 1860's Danish).

Bertel was 2nd of 5 children. His older brother Ole Jacob Eliasen, was born in 1887, and died in Canada in 1918.

The three remaining siblings, Malena, Jacobina and Hans Elias, married in the Faroes, and got 9, 10 and 6 children respectively.

Hope this has helped a bit. :)

Sincerely,

Johan Petur Dam
Faroe Islands

If it is not in English, there should be either Amer flag or British flag over on the left. Click it for English.

You can also go to some of the links on my family page http://mysite.verizon.net/reso3aa7/.
a very good point Johan Peter

Danish was the language of colonial administrations and
faerose was not taught at school or even written down until quite recently

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faeroese_language
>> but after the Reformation 1538, the ruling Danes outlawed its use in schools, churches and official documents. The islanders continued to use the language in ballads, folktales, and everyday life. This maintained a rich spoken tradition, but for 300 years the language was not written down.

This changed when Venceslaus Ulricus Hammershaimb published a written standard for Modern Faroese 1854 that exists to this day<<

I learnt a little faeroese from Hans Bondir in Klaksvik and continued to study in Tórshavn for two and a half years before moving to Copenhagen.

>In 1937, Faroese replaced Danish as the official school language, 1938 as church language, and 1948 as national language by the Home Rule Act of the Faroes.
However, Faroese didn't become the common language in the media and advertising until the 1980s. Today, Danish is considered as a foreign language, though around 5% of the Faroe Islanders learn it as a first language and it is a required subject for students 3rd grade and up. << all before the English-Faroese dictionary (Ensk-føroysk orðabók), came out.

I learned a lot about linguistics, not having any danish then, I had to learn how to think about language aquisition with only a childs ABC and the bible for reference

Hugh W

In this American "twig" , it was adopted to drop the second "A". I dont know exactly why. I guess they thought it more Americanized without it. There are 4 generations of us living in America and we are all related. We are the only Ellingsgard's in America that we are aware of. I did have the genealogy of Ellen Marie Joensdatter Nolsoe back to her grandfather and that was as far as I could get. But the real begininng of ELLINGSGAARD
began with Knud Olsen from the Ellingsgaard farm in Norway. He brought it to faeroe Isle in 1744 as far as I am aware.
Please e-mail me direct at the above e-mail and I will give you more info. There is just so much that I want to post here in a public forum.

Not really a genealogical reply, but just a note.

The ð in Eiði is NOT pronunced like the Icelandic ð (English th in the). In Faroese this sound has been lost, and today ð mostly represents a hiatus. In this case a y-sound.

Thus Eiði is pronunced EYE-YUH. (or if you live in Eiði it's pronunced OY-YUH) :)

Also, Faroese is a case languages, yes, but its endings don't change to a such extent as they do in e.g. Russian or Finnish.

Just wanted to point these things out. :)

Alas, no.

The person I'm referring to is the priest Clement Laugesen Follerup (1602, Vollerup, Denmark - 1688, Sandur, Faroe Islands). He had 16 children, and his genes are today spread across the country. (and outside)

This priest was H.P. Ellingsgaard's wife's great-great-great-grandfather. This just shows how far the relation between us is. However, it's there, and the Faroese being a very genealogy interested people love to find out about these things. :)

Anyway, E.M. Nolsøe, was the daugther of Joen Djonesen Nolsøe, who was the son of Djone Poulsen, who was the son of Susanne Djonedatter, who was the daughter of Ellen Simonsdatter, who was the daughter of Simon Clementsen, who was the son of Clement Laugesen Follerup. Currently my tree holds close to 35,000 of CLF's descendants, however, they are more than that.

Worth noting is the fact, Djone Poulsen's brother was Poul Poulsen Nolsøe (1766-1808), who was the man who built the first Faroese ship 'Royndin Fríða' in 1804. This was in objection to the Danish monopoly trade. His descendants are also numerous.

It's strange, that Ellingsgaard lost one of its a's. How did this occur?

Anyway, if you have any further question, I'll happily try to answer them. :)

JPD

Hello everyone, I don't have any genealogy questions, just a comment. My great aunt, Elizabeth Taylor, lived on the Faroes for about a dozen years during WW1 time...she loved them. A cousin compiled her writings and artistry into a book, which I have enjoyed reading very much. Right now the book is in VT and I live in AZ, so I can't read and write at this point, but hopefully sometime in the future will get back with some places, stories and names.

From prehistoric times to the coming of steam trains in the second quarter of the nineteenth century, the seas were the freeways of transport and the fastest route - so not a barrier at all.

East coast of England fishermen to this day meet their colleagues from the west coast of Denmark at sea on the fishing banks, and the dialects have striking similarities, traditionally they could understand each other.

House and mouse in southern england is pronounced *hoose and moose in Scotland - and the same in Faeroes but written hus and mus, Iceland Norway Denmark AND in Germany haus and maus and in Flemmish or Dutch too with a softer vowel huis muis.

So a shipwrecked sailor or one that fell in love with a local girl, you may never know.

Hugh W
