Michel Filong(e) and Julia Nissec - from Estonia to Pennsylvania, USA

My great great grandparents were Michel Filong/Filonge (b. 1885) and Julia Nissec (b. 1891, d. 1971). On the 1930 US Census, they are living in Nazareth, Pennsylvania, USA, but they are listed as being from Russia, which is crossed out, and then Estonia is written. Their parents are from Estonia as well, and they speak German. Does anyone know what this means in terms of a region where they were from? They left Estonia in 1910 for the U.S.

I would like to find out who their parents are, as well as any Estonian records. If anyone has any information pertaining to this query, or would like to share research, please email me at jessicaclark1011@gmail.com

Hi, Robert,

Have your ancestors/relatives kept in touch with their families who stayed in Finland?... I have been trying to build my ancestry chain(i.e., tree), but so far - unsuccessfully. All info I have is that in the 18th/19th c they lived somewhere around Karelia area. Some of them( i.e., my direct greatgrandparents) ended up in Russia after the WWII. Others ( their cousins, siblings etc) stayed in Finland. I hope I can trace them as far back as only possible, but at this point i cannot even get as far as 19th c. So, if you happen to have any leads/tips/info etc, I will greatly appreciate that.Who knows, maybe some of mine came to Finland from Sweden in 1600s, or something like that.
Re: UNDRITZ of Tallinn

My parents were both born in Estonia. They said that although they do not personally know any "UNDRITZ" or "von UNDRITZ", they recognize the name as being Baltic.

I "Googled" and found Adolf Oskar UNDRITZ (1864 to 1933) was Pastor at St. Nikolai Kirche (German word for church) in Reval (German word for Tallinn). This would have been a German Lutheran church at the time.

He may have studied theology at the University of Tartu (Dorpat in German) in Estonia, as this was the only University that provided this education in Estonia.

If you go on the LDS site - www.familysearch.org, you will find more "UNDRITZ" listed including Adolf Oskar UNDRITZ mentioned above in Estonia.

There is also a Mr. von UNDRITZ in St. Petersburg Russia, but no first name. The "von" would suggest he was Baltic nobility, perhaps knighted by the then reigning Russian Czar.

Best of luck with your search,

I have already posted my search for one side of my family - Erlakas, who supposedly lived in Estonia. I am also looking for another side of my family with last name Martinen ( or Marttinen), who are supposedly from Finland. From what I have found out they both -the Erlakas and the Martinen families - were in and out of Estonia, Finland, Karelia. At one point they are were somewhere under St. Petersburg ( Russia). I believe, at one point, the ethnic/cultural group, with which they were associated, was referred to as "inhermaland" ( or "ingermaland" or something sounding like that).

I have already tried some of the links some people kindly forwarded to me - some of them did not contain the info, while others turned out to contain extensive church records, which I started researching. So far - nothing certain.

I will appreciate any help/leads.

Thank you.

However, I will double check and see what I can find. UNderstanding how important it is to know the place of birth/residence, I have been trying to find out what it was, but most people, who would know, are gone, and no one seems to really know... Anyways, I will check the website. Thank you so much !!!

Does the Soviet passport give a place of birth? If it does, the next step could be to explore the on-line scanned church and other records on Saaga, http://www.eha.ee/saaga.
It would help if you knew where they lived in Estonia. Or possibly which congregation they were with. You can use the following link (unfortunately only in Estonian) to get access to old church books, etc.
http://www.ra.ee/dgs/addon/nimreg/

You need to register for the site too.

Hope this helps :)

Also, on a different note, if anyone happens to know anyone who once was called Hytti (Hütti) and now lives in Alaska, USA, I'd appreciate any new information.

Kat

Reinmann V. Baeckmann - Estonia

I am interested in the Reinmann,v. Baeckmann, and Hausmann families in Werro, (now Voru), Estonia. Johann Reinmann married Amalia Theresia von Baechmann 3 July 1835 in Werro. Their youngest daughter was the mother of my grandfather, Friedrich Alwill Reinmann in 1864. According to the church records, the father was a Max Hausmann. I am particulaly interested in the parents and possible siblings of Johann Reinmann as well as information on his birth and death (before 1880).

Thank you for any help with this. I will share information I have on these families.

Fred Reinman

I am wondering if we may have a connection. My grandfather Alexander Adder (Ader) came from Saaremaa. We have no exact birth date but believe it was c. 1880. His father was Johannes Ader and his mother Engel Allak.I am his only grandchild in the UK. I have reason to believe his family were farmers but he was one of the youngest brothers and ran away to sea about 1895 to avoid conscription. Could Oder have been mis-translated as Ader?

While digging around on the net, I came across a magazine called TUNA which appears to be published in Estonia. One of the issues contains an article about an Estonian named Igor Aier who was imprisoned by the Russians in the early 1940's. There is a very good chance that this individual was my wife's great uncle. Her grandmother (maiden name Aier) was from Estonia and became seperated from her family around 1943 or 1944. Her brother Igor disappeared after returning from fighting in the Spanish Civil war.

Is anyone familiar with this publication or does anyone have any idea how I can purchase a back issue? The summaries were the only thing written in English on the webiste where I found it, and unfortunately I cannot read Estonian.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Scott
