Stranded Mariners, June 1849

Surnames: Slater, Kapten
I have documentary evidence that my 2x gt grandfather James Slater landed on the Estonian island of Osel (now Saaremaa) in June 1849. He landed there due to the stranding of the sailing brig "Canning" of which he was master. The source (Lloyds list of London) states that "all cargo, ships stores and crew of the vessel were landed safely near to Arensburg (now Kuresaare).
Some years ago I had contact with the Estonian ambassador to England- by the name of Kapten who said he could not find records of any Slaters on the island.
Still, I believe it should be possible to trace individuals, of whatever name (Kapten/Captain maybe?)that do not occur on the island before this date.
I have a full genetic profile for myself so any candidates (if willing) could be tested for similarity.
If you cannot help directly now, any tips on what I might be able to research personally would be welcome; many thanks,
Martin F. Slater
