That is very interesting. They are clearly family to have been in the album, but it is a puzzle. I don't know if anyone will be brave enough to tackle this one. I have one last photo but instead of scanning the back of it, my dad tried to copy the writing himself. He had to guess and this is what he sent me. I am wondering if someone who is familiar with the Danish language will be able to decipher this even though things are clearly misspelled/mis-transcribed.

It is a family group shot taken outside. 2, possibly 3 generations if the husband aged well and the wife didn't.

Burnimeades (Burhimeades?) unreadable (could it be a surname?)

Sofias alste Lou oy (ay?) Liu fauele unreadable moer det et veil vrive (urive?) Viudic(e?)u.

I know this is a tall order, and thanks to anyone who tries.
Danish Translation?

My Flemish great grandmother Henrietta (born in 1869)had these photos in her possession. Google translate Dutch couldn't help but a general search matched the words I could decipher as Danish (or maybe Norwegian?). Can anyone confirm this and translate the backs of these photos?

The people in the photos must have been relatives (possibly her brother and his family) as they were with all the other family photos from the era. The correspondence seems to have continued 18 years after she immigrated to America (based on 1928 being written in one of the entries). The family was in Flanders for centuries and has been traced...all except for one line.

Around the beginning of the twentieth century, when the Danish government began encouraging Danes to stop using the patronymic naming system, some of my relatives chose the surname 'Agerkvist'. So I am probably related to many Danes who bear that name today. Our common ancestor might be Peder Rasmussen, born 1807 in Norre Jernlose, Merlose, Holbaek, Zealand. If you think we might be related, please contact me.

Mvh,
Yes, might be wrong, but could be right too. Might explain partly why the family held to the belief that she was 18, pregnant and went away.....maybe that was when she left the family, maybe not to America, but to another city, such as Copenhagen or elsewhere.
Thanks Maj-Britt. That helps a lot.

> "About the shipping of, this is just the story that my grandmother was told, by her mother." <

So....Magda is your grandmother's mother? And Magda said she was "shipped off"? (or Magda said other words with the same meaning)

Then you guys are NOT guessing. You two are quoting Magda. Magda is the source of that story. This wasn't stated before. Thank you.

> "I can tell you that the whole family except for Magda are there." <

From this you must mean the family is in Egense in 1911? If the family had moved, that would be a clue - a place to look for Magda.

I hope you find Magda in Svendborg as you complete your search.

About Vor Frue Kirke in Copenhagen: the Copenhagen police registry gives her address in 1914 and 1915. From there you can tell the way to Vor Frue. I'm no help with this, but some people in this forum would know how to locate her path from home, past Vor Frue. Another very good forum for help with details like that is Slaegt og Data DIS-Danmark.

There was a hospital/home for unwed mothers in Copenhagen (Rigshospitalet, I think). I have wondered if Magda had a child before she left for America. She talks about being estranged from her family when she was 18. And there's a family story about a businessman in Svendborg. She is living in Copenhagen circa 1914. So isn't it unlikely the Svendborg guy is the father of Paul born in USA Jan 1916? So could he be the father of an earlier child? Maybe she was a maid in Svendborg, got pregnant, and came to Copenhagen then? Could it be she gave up a child for adoption? Now that is really guessing. You can decide if that is a worthwhile place to look. I don't want to send you on a "wild goose chase" (a useless hunt).

I can see the two of you are an excellent team.

And don't you just hate those computer problems? Arghhhh

Mvh

Well that was just one hypothesis to incorporate parts of the family story shared in this thread:
1. Family story that Magda had a child by a businessman in Svendborg. Well, Magda was in Copenhagen by 1914 and Paul was born Jan 1916. Various explanations are possible - a pregnancy before Paul being just one.
2. Family story that Magda left Denmark at age 18. Well, Magda left Denmark at age 25. Age 18 could be just an error in the family story - but also age 18 could be when she left her father's home (circa 1908). The latter story fits with the records you've found - she's not with her family in 1911.
3. Family story that Magda's parents (father/stepmother) were scandalized by her or in conflict with her in some way. The records we've found seem to show that the parents would not even know Magda was pregnant when she left Denmark.

The earlier pregnancy is just an idea, and probably WRONG. Just trying to incorporate this businessman in Svendborg. Maybe that was an affair - but no pregnancy? another idea. Or maybe he didn't exist, lol.

Sometimes family stories are totally wrong, or have some mistakes in them. Sometimes they are correct! As you two already pointed out early in this thread.

Wish I was more helpful.

Mvh

Falsterden,

Interesting idea that Magda's son Paul, the child she is pregnant with when she leaves Denmark, may actually not be her first child. I had not really contemplated that. I think there must be something to that idea though, maybe.....Maj-Britt's family was always under the impression Magda was 18 when she left Denmark and was pregnant, but the story must have gotten mixed up a bit somehow, somewhere? Maybe she was actually pregnant at 18 then? Could she have left at 18, as well as 25, and then come back and lived in Copenhagen after leaving the first time?

It seems the more we uncover, the more unanswered questions we find!

Thanks for your help and insight, appreciate it.

Fawn

Yes, the family are still in Rantzausminde/Egense in 1911.

" Maybe she was a maid in Svendborg, got pregnant, and came to copenhagen then? " This is exactly what I'm guessing, this is the theory I'm working after and why I want to search the entire Svendborg Amt 1911. I also planned to look through the churchbook for Den Kgl. Fødselsstiftelse, maybe she did have an earlier pregnancy. So you thinking the same as me, gives me a little hope, that maybe I am on the right track.

Magda is not the mother of my grandmother, but her aunt. The story was told to my grandmother by her mother Ebba, the halfsister of Magda, who was very close to her.
When Ebba died my grandmother continued writing with Magda until Magdas death. During all those years of corresponding, the story never changed, so it's almost like quoting Magda.

Thank you very much for your input, if you have any other ideas please let us know.

Venlig hilsen

Maj-Britt

More later - for now just a quick comment - I did not say the family probably would not allow Magda to live with them during her pregnancy. I certainly could not guess about that. Additional information about Magda's immigration is found on page 2 of the passenger manifest. I see what you mean about the 1911 census. Magda registered to emigrate 29 April 1915 and gave birth 17 January 1916 (about a week and a half shy of nine months later). She seems to leave Denmark before she could even know she is pregnant.
Hi fasterden.

I am the danish cousin, Maj-Britt.
I wish I could show you the 1911 census for Magdas parents and siblings, but I can't access the information as I have problems with JAVA, and now I really wish i had written down the opslagsnr. Sorry.
I can tell you that the whole family except for Magda are there, I have looked at it several times before my computer problems, there is nothing in the tillægsliste either.

I have looked through about 75 % of Svendborg Amt 1911 census', and nothing yet. Hopefully my JAVA problems are temporary and I can continue my search.

About the shipping of, this is just the story that my grandmother was told, by her mother. In this story/skrøne Magda was about 18 years old when it happened, and of course we now know that she left for America when she was in her mid twenties.
You write that I am guessing, and yes I am trying to guess where she went, what she did and where to look for her, as I have next to no clues.

I have found old letters she sent, and is looking for any information that might give me a clue. In one letter she writes about Vor Frue Kirke in Copenhagen, and how she walked past it many times, maybe that's a clue. But not being able to access census', all this information did was that it made me frustrated.

Sorry that I'm not able to give you anything more concrete to work with.

Maj-Britt

Thanks Fawn, you are being so patient with me. My impression was that you guys had the 1911 census for Magda's PARENTS AND SIBLINGS. It seemed you were saying Magda was not with her parents in 1911, which means you found the parents, otherwise you couldn't know Magda's not with them. Could you post a transcription of the 1911 census for Magda's parents?
I forgot to mention, that the man she is with in the 1920 census in North Dakota has been in North Dakota since 1904 and is found there still in the 1930 census, so, he was there before and after Magda came along. He maybe the father of the 3rd child, but we do not know when Magda went to Minnesota for sure. There are at least 2 different fathers then for Magda's first 3 children, perhaps 3 fathers, we are not sure.

Fawn

My Danish cousin is the one looking in the Danish records for Magda, as it is a bit easier for her being Danish. Here is what she says:

"Hi Fawn.

Yes, she is not with her family in 1911, I searched the whole of Rantzausminde/Egense and she is not there. It is of course true, that there is a slight possibilty that who ever did the census all those years ago, made a mistake. But how could we ever know! I have to assume she was somewhere else and that hopefully I will find her.

Maj-Britt"

Magda moved around quite a bit after coming to the US. After having Paul in New Jersey in 1916, the one we are assuming was fathered in Denmark, she had a daughter, Elsa in 1918 in Montana, we find her in North Dakota living with a Danish man , listed as a servant, with her two children, Paul and Elsa, then in 1921, she has another boy in Minnesota, she is alone then. She then marries my great grandfather, she is actually ~2 months pregnant with the 3rd illegitimate son at the time......
So its safe to assume she probably didn't know she was pregnant when she left Denmark and that she left because she wanted to, at least somewhat, and probably as a result of the affair scandal in Svendborg.

Fawn

Magda had told her children (years later) that she had worked as a maid for a man named Larsen and that she had her first 3 children by him, also that it had all occurred "out East" referring to the East Coast of the US. We found out that this was not entirely true.....only the first child, Paul, was apparently fathered by this older man. Whether his name was really Larsen or not, we don't know. She left Denmark in May of 1915, her son Paul was born January 17 1916 in New Jersey, USA. That puts Paul's date of conception ~late April of 1915, while she was still in Denmark. I do not have Paul's birth certificate, but I am requesting a search for one from the state of New Jersey. His obituary states his birth as Jan. 17, 1915 in New Jersey.

I suppose it is possible she was omitted from the family on the census of 1911. I wonder though if she is living with this businessman as his maid in 1911 already? I'm speculating that if we find Magda living with another family in the 1911 records, that the head of the household may be the man she had the affair with and the father of her first son Paul?

I agree with you that she was not truly "shipped off" by her family and that she of course must have had a big part in the decision to emigrate to the US, being 25 years old. That is how my Danish cousin's family referred to Magda's leaving Denmark though....

I think you may be right that the family would probably not allow her living with them to carry out the pregnancy there, if this was a scandal in the town.

Thank you for your help- it was interesting to see that she paid for the passage.

Fawn

Maybe you will have a better chance with your query if you correct it (you say Hans Harder born 1742 marries Bodil Sophie Kleist in 1743). Also it seems you are actually interested in Nikolay Christian Harder born 1752 in Norway, and you only happened to notice the same surname in Denmark? If Nikolay is your true interest, then research is needed in Norwegian records (and thus the Norway message board might help you better).

I did look through Ancestry.com family trees for Hans Harder, Bodil Sophie Kleist, Nikolay Christian Harder - and the trees are hopelessly snarled with impossible combinations (a mother giving birth at age 7 and so on). Probably best to start by posting all you know about Nikolay Christian Harder and work back from there to establish his parents, ancestors, and cousins.

If I could directly help you, I would. Maybe the suggestion can help a little.

Mvh

Is it possible that Magda's name was inadvertnetly omitted from the family in the 1911 census? (a mistake by the census taker) I guess we can't know unless she is found in the census elsewhere.

The word on the Copenhagen police registry is Alder = age = birth date.

You are saying Magda was pregnant when she left Copenhagen for America? When was her child born in USA? Do you have that birth certificate? Is the father named?

She has been living independently in Copenhagen since 1914 and leaves Copenhagen 29 April 1915, traveling to her friend Mrs. L. Greer in Wilmington, North Carolina. Probably she is not being "shipped off," would be my guess. Her father and stepmother could refuse to allow her to return to their home to carry out her pregnancy, but as far as I know they could not compel her to leave Denmark.

On the passenger manifest, when asked by whom was passage paid, she answers: self

Here's that 1906 census you already have - would it help to post the 1911 census for the family as well?:

1906 Danish Census
Svendborg, Sunds, Egense
Laurits Theodor [Skytte] Knudsen born 2/11 64 Gift, Husfader	Lærer [Skaarup Sogn - Svendborg Amt]
Ane Kirstine Knudsen [født Rasmussen] 10/4 76?
I believe the police registration is the right Magda and just a mistake in writing the birth month:

I can't read her father's address on the passenger list either, but pretty sure it's the same as on her registration.

One of the helpful Danes will probably recognize it.

Edit: I think it's Rantzausminde a place in Egense parish.

Not reading Danish, I was unaware that aider = her birthdate? Someone on this board had originally found this police record and we do know that Magda was listed as having lived in Copenhagen as her last permanent residence before immigrating. Perhaps the 1 was mistakenly left off before the 2 so it looks like Feb. vs Dec or perhaps this is not my Magda.......

Her immigration info is below. Would she have just lived in Copenhagen for a few weeks before immigrating? Is there a way to tell how long she was there, assuming the police record is her?

Are you sure the police registration attached is 'your' Magda?

It lists birthdate as 5 FEBRUARY 1889, and I can't read the birthplace listed but it's not Egense.

I'm looking for my great grandmother Magda Cathrine Knudsen in the 1911 Danish records, but have had no luck looking in the places where we thought she might have been. Any help, whether it just be ideas as to where she might have gone, would be appreciated!

Here is what we know.......

Magda Cathrine Knudsen, b. Dec 5, 1889 in Egense Parish, Sunds, Swendborg, Denmark. She is the only child of her mother, who dies when she is 2 year old of TB.

Father: Laurits Theodor Skytte Knudsen, b. Nov 2, 1862 in Skaarup parish, Sunds, Svendborg, Denmark.

Mother: Frederikke Cathrine Kaas, b.March 29, 1864 in Thurø Parish, Sunds,Svendborg, Denmark. Died, Dec 24, 1891.

Laurits' 2nd wife/Magda's stepmother: Ane Kirstine Rasmussen, b. April 30, 1877 in Egense Parish, Sunds, Swendborg, Denmark. Marries Laurits May 7, 1897 in Egense Parish, Sunds, Swendborg, Denmark

Laurits and his 2nd wife Ane Kirstine have 4 children together:
Ebba Alice Marie b. 1898
Aage William Rasmus Skytte b. 1899
Margrethe Caroline b. 1900
Ellen Rigmor Ingeborg b. 1904

The story is that Magda and her stepmother Ane Kirstine did not get along at all. It looks like Magda was sent away in 1901 to live with friends of the family. In 1906 she is back with the family, then disappears in 1911. I will copy what my cousin told me she found/did not find, it may be easier.

"I have looked at the census for Rantzausminde/Egense in 1901, 1906 and 1911.In 1901 Magda is not with her family, she is staying with friends of the family in a place called Skårup. Maybe this shows us that there were problems in the relationship between Magda and her new mom Anne Kirstine as early as 1901.
In 1906 she is back living with her family and in 1911 she is nowhere to be found. So she definitely left home/was kicked out sometime between 1906 and 1911, age 17-22.
I so want to find where she lived and what she did next, but so far no luck."

In 1915, Magda is living in Copenhagen. Apparently in early April/Late March of 1915 she becomes pregnant (and is not married). The family story is that she had an affair with a prominent businessman in Svendborg, this pregnancy being the culmination of that affair. In May of 1915 she is "shipped off to America" supposedly by her family. Another bit of info from my cousin......

"I can tell you a little about Magdas father and stepmother. Laurits was a teacher, but more than that, I dont know the english word, like a senior teacher with management responsibilities, he also played the organ in Egense church. I imagine the church was very important to him, so when his young daughter got pregnant, he probably had to act, maybe not send her away but something."

Sooooo, not sure where exactly Magda was living when she had the affair or before that in 1911. The attachment shows where she was living in Copenhagen before she immigrated to America.

Any help or insight would be much appreciated, thank you!

This is response to the unwed mother bit listed in your replies. Unless it states in the christening record that the mother is unwed DO NOT assume that because the mother and fathers names are different...especially before 1875.

Here's why:
Denmark Naming Patterns

Understanding given names and surnames can help you find and identify your ancestors in the records.
Surnames
Before record keeping began in Denmark, most people had only one name, such as Jens. As the population increased, it became necessary to distinguish between individuals with the same name. The problem was usually solved by adding descriptive information. Jens became Jens the smith, Jens the son of Matthis, Jens the short, or Jens from Fredericia. At first, "surnames" applied only to one person and not to the whole family. After a few generations, these names were passed from father to son. Surnames developed from four major sources:

Patronymic, based on a parent's name, such as Lars Nielsen (son of Niels)
Occupational, based on the person's trade, such as Jens Smed (the smith)
Nicknames, based on a person's characteristics, such as Anders Blåtann (bluetooth)
Geographical, based on a person's residence, such as Peder Tolstrup

Surnames were first used by the nobility and wealthy land owners. Later the custom was followed by merchants and townspeople, and eventually by the rural population.
Patronymic surnames are the predominant type in Denmark. Such names are based on the father's given name. This name changed with each generation. For example, Lars Pedersen was the son of a man named Peder. If Lars had a son Hans, the son would be known as Hans Larsen (son of Lars). His brothers would be called Larsen, while a sister would be known as Larsdatter (daughter of Lars).

Where the population used patronymics, a woman did not change her name at marriage.

From about 1850 on, it was customary for Danes living in cities to take permanent surnames. By 1875, many rural parts of Denmark followed suit. In some places, patronymic surnames were used until 1904, when a national law required people to adopt permanent family names.
Given Names
In Denmark, a particular naming pattern was very common until about 1850. The following pattern may be helpful in researching family groups:
The first male child was usually named for the father's father.

The second boy was usually named for the mother's father.
The first female child was usually named for the mother's mother.
The second girl was named for the father's mother.

Additional children were often named for the parents and the parents' brothers and sisters.
If one spouse died, the other remarried, and children were born to the new pair, the couple usually named the first child of the same sex after the deceased spouse.
Danish genealogical records may be in Danish, Latin, or German. Your ancestor's name could be in Latin in his birth record, in Danish in his marriage record, and in German in his death record. Names are often very different when translated into different languages.
