Peter Mortensen from Halse, Bornholm, Denmark

I am searching for information on my gggrandfather, Peter (Peder?) Mortensen, He had two sons John Christian and Charles Christian and a daughter Anne. There may have been additional children. The boys came to America in 1884. On John's marriage license, it list his father as Peder and Petrea Jul as his mother. The son's list Halse, Bornholm Denmark as their home. John C. married a Carrie Aborg in LaSalle County Illinois and moved to Kay county, Oklahoma. Charles married Alice Kofoid or Kofoed and stayed in LaSalle county Illinois. Anne stayed in Denmark and may have married a Sonne. Does anyone know this family?

John Christian Mortensen was my gg grandfather, and he immigrated in the 1880's and later settled in Kay Co. Oklahoma. My maiden name is Mortensen.

From the original post, Peter sounds like he may be my ggg grandfather. I'd love more info.

Sinking of The August from Papenburg 13/14 august 1866

I am researching my family history and believe an ancestor of mine George Gunn captained a ship called the Paragon which on the night of 13/14 August 1866 rescued five people from a boat that was sinking called the August. The next day the rescued people were dropped off at Bornholm via a fishing boat. I was hoping there might be some records in Bornholm that could tell me more

I am searching for the Kjoller family in Bornholm and also the Dam family there. In the previous posts I see that there are some Kjollers living in Horsens market town in Skanderborg. Anders (Andreas) Hansen Dam (b 1798?) and Karen Margrethe herskin/Haeske - born 1798/99 (her mother was Margrethe koller of Christianso I think), both Bornholm born in census of 1845 were also living in Horsens.

Was there perhaps a Kjoller Horsens Bornholm link or did Bornholm families traditionally make a trip to Skandeborg? Andreas Hansen Dam was a skipper, his son Michal Jorgen Dam a sailor.

Thank you. I have been searching in some Danish and Danish extracted records and have found the name Koller spelt in several different ways

Are these above variations of the one name? Found mainly around Bornholm/ Christianso.

In New Zealand records it is Kohler, Koller and Koller with an umlaut (is the Danish word omlyd?) on the 'o'.

I have not seen my ancestors name spelt Kohler in any Danish records so far.

PS I mixed up a couple of generations in my first post. Have his parents names who were Anders Hansen Dam & Karen Margrethe Herskin/Haeske. His maternal grandmother's name was Magrethe Kirstine Thomasdr Køller and think she was born in Christianso.

Edward Thomas Dam sometimes Edward Thomas Kohler Dam left Denmark, became a master mariner and settled in NZ in the 1850s. Family legend is that he was born as his mother was dying. Family lore also states that his mother's name was Karen Margrethe Hansen. On FS I have found a reference to a marriage on Klemensker Bornholm on 27/10/1823 between Jensen Dam and Karen Margrethe Hansdr. I have not been able to find a birth of Edward Thomas Dam or a death of Karen Dam. A search of the Stats Archiv was frustrating as I do not have the software to read the results (aspx) although there seemed to be information. Is the name Kohler also spelt Kjoller? Where else can I look for information or does someone here have information? Other possible clues are the names William and Valdemar being the names of one of his sons and that his death entry states he is Episcopalian. One of his daughters was Thyra and the others Hilda Gabrielle & phillis Dagmar.
This is a wide query I know ....have just started on this arm of the family after immersing myself in the Irish side.

I visited the grave of Hans Jacob in Frederiksted St. Croix this past week. He rests in a grave that includes his son Lauritz Tranberg ( my grandfather ). My father Emil Tranberg also is resting in the Frederiksted cemetery.

I am struggling getting information on a family line from Jens Senius Berthulin Pedersen, who was born in Provlsker, Bornholm in October 1837. He was married to Margrethe Schmidt, but I can find no credible information on her. I am trying to see how far back the line goes within Bornholm, but I have come to a roadblock. Any assistance would be very helpful.

Since you knew he also emigrated, I supposed you had other details. The odds of another with exact same birthdate are slim but coincidence is possible. Maybe you can get an obituary for the one buried in Sheboygan Co, WI from the "Statewide" lookup volunteer at end of this list:

Many parish records date from 17th or 18th century, but some have been lost. The earliest census is 1787.

Most early records are difficult to read because of the old script and poor handwriting.

I have no knowledge of Karen's data, but the church records are now online and free in the Danish Archives site: http://www.sa.dk/ao/

With the info you listed their records were easy to find, as Amly's birth record lists her parents' marriage date and place, and the birth records also list the family's address in Rønne which simplified finding them in the censuses.

Do you know if the brother Svend also came to USA?

The manifest lists Anna's last address as Fredericksburg, but her father's as Nørregade 16, Rønne and attached is the family in 1921 Rønne census, the son Svend then still at home.

In 1925 and 1930, the last year available, they were at Nørregade 14, Svend no longer with them.

Unfortunately, the Rønne death records for 1952 seem to be missing.

In ellis island a Janus Hansen arrived in New York on 22 sept 1910. He was going to his home in Newman, California, with wife Mary and son Willie.

If you are using Ancestry, they have misread the careless handwriting as "James Elor" Hansen, and Janus Chr. Hansen 19 is passenger 91, the last one on second page.

And the ink is smeared on arrival date so hard to tell if 20th or 26th.

Hello again Flemming..could you please tell me where you found the info re Janus Hansens' presence on the Thingvalla in May 1890? Do you know if he was a passenger or crew?
The NY passenger list for that voyage doesn't show him (and it also lists the ship arriving on the 21st or 26th of May.

He left Copenhagen 6 or 7 may 1890 on Thingvalla.

Thingvalla left Christiania( Oslo,Norway) on the 8 may 1890.
Arrived New York 20 may 1890.

Collided with an iceberg the 19th in a foggy morning,
20 feet high and 100 feet long. No personal injury and only
minor damage to the ship.

Born in Nexo Jan 3rd 1871 to Anders Hansen & Boline Christine Mikkelsen (both died there). Married in San Jose, CA in 1902. Cannot find when or how he migrated from Nexo to U.S. He was apparently very taken with the ships in the port. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am researching my Marckmann family and am interested about my Marckmann relatives in Denmark. Has anyone related to Otto Villhelm Alexander Marckmann born in 1820, married Charlotte Copmann? My gggrandfather (Otto Marckmann) came to the US in 1883 but I believe he had two brothers and two sisters, Wilhelm (born abt 1849) and Frederik (born abt 1850), Sigrid (1852) and Sophie (1857).

I need help finding Johan Holm. He was born in Sweden in about 1828. He is the father of a child with my Great Great Grandmother, Ane Marie Sophie Nielsen. His daughter is Johanna Augusta Nielsen, born 2 August 1854, in Knudsker, Bornholm, Denmark. Johanna's parish record of birth lists the father as Johan Holm, of Sweden, who is already gone.

Does anyone have ideas of how to find him in Sweden or know more about his family?

My wife is a Sonne. Her grandfather was Hans Christian Sonne 1864 - 1943 was born in Bornholm and moved to Warren, PA in the US in 1883 and died in Titusville, PA. His father was Herman Mathias Sonne 1836 - 1886 in Bornholm. He was married to Nicoline Marie Georgene Thorkildsen, daughter of Jens Peter Thorkildsen.

We're visiting Bornholm from June 7 to 9. Any help or suggestions on genealogy research would be appreciated.
