We have known all our lives that we are of Tongan/Portuguese decent, and I am really excited to know which part of the family tree you have appeared from. Your great grandfather Manoel Santos Senior is survived by his widow, your great grandmother Winnie Santos who is 92 years old, and still alive today - sharp as a tack! I would love you to email me if you want to get in touch.

Cheers
Anne Reti (formerly Santos)

Rev Peter Turner, not Dana
.................
Sydney Morning Herald; 9 June 1855
The Rev. Peter Turner moved the third resolution, and recounted, at some length, his experiences as a missionary at the Islands of Tonga and the Samoa group, in the South Seas, during a period of twenty four years. He described, in graphic language, which time and space will not permit us fully to report, the trials, difficulties, and dangers which he underwent and met with in the prosecution of his calling; and spoke with deep emotions of pleasure of the success which had attended his efforts amongst the once barbarous natives of those islands. He regretted exceedingly having been obliged to relinquish his labour of love, which he only did at the oft repeated calls of the society, and in vindication of the honour. He had no natural children, but he had been regarded by these poor people as their father, and he considered them his offspring, and a numerous family he thanked God they were. Would that it had pleased the Al- mighty to have allowed him to lay down his life amongst them, that at the final day he might have arisen with them leading them to glory. When he was about leaving them, the natives flocked around him, and entreated him to stay amongst them, and they would support him in their rude but comfortable way; but being ordered by the Society, who had made arrangements with the London Missionary Society, that the latter should alone occupy the field he at last felt compelled reluctantly to give way; and now an old man, considered on the shelf, he hoped to end his days in this country, but still he would always glory in the name and fact of being a missionary.

Im hoping someone can help me with an ancestor search query. Im trying to track down the Tongan ancestors of my gg grandmother, Olivia Moala born 1864 and died in Lakeba Fiji in the 1940's. According to oral history, her mother was a Tongan from Vavau and her european father was supposedly from Scotland, having the name George Eric (Arrick), the corruption of this name was Siaosi Fiala Areti. If there is anything anyone can share with regard to this or direct me to some record, this would be greatly appreciated

thanks christine... I was completely wrong.
Leafaitulagi who was the Grandaughter of Seumanutafa Moepogai I who went on to marry Prince Havea's brother. But there is also a link to the Pulepule in Solosolo where I think Tupolesava is the name he originally went by before they changed it to Pulepule. That is the link I am trying to find.
Thanks though

I have spoken to a great uncle who advised that Pulepule .. meaning mixed. due to the mixed blood of the samoan and tongan was originally Tupo'. Tapu o Tupo' is a family saying meaning Taboo of Tupo' which is said in our lauga faa'samoa.. He also mentioned that Sipu Tupo was his name? But he is unsure. He also said he was a son of Salote??

However I will post more once I have returned from Samoa. Thanks for the link. Leafaitulagi was the eldest daughter of the high chief of Solosolo.

Most of what I know is that the King of Tonga, the Pulepule to whom I am referring was his younger brother who went to Samoa and married a Samoan. However he died in Tonga but was brought back to Samoa to finally be buried on Mt. Lotolagi in the Village of Solosolo Samoa.

Hello Christine,
I am thankful for the great information you have provided. I do not know all the missing history that I need to understand. I am sure that an ancestor of ours had travelled to tonga at a very young age. He however came back with stories of his travel. He however brought his children from the King's daughter or sister back to Manua. I assume she had died. He came back with his children, Ana, Polivia, Tagisi, Lomi, and Potosii. I believe there is one more but I do not have the name. There is however a key point to this story of an Island near Vava'u that is said to have been named after his homeland...Ofu....I assume the time period should be in the late 1700s to early 1800s. Just a question...do you know the history of this island called Ofu near Vavau?

Steve,
Are you getting your Elisiva mixed up with Elisiva Fusipala Taukionetuku, who was the mother of George 2?

Elisiva Fusipala Tauki'onetuku
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

ʻElisiva Fusipala Taukiʻonetuku (18 May 1850 – September 1889) was the mother of King George Tupou II.
Born in 1850 to Tēvita ʻUnga and his first wife Fifita Vavʻau. Her father was, according to newly adopted Christian law, an illegitimate son of King Tupou I because his mother was a secondary wife of the king. Her family's luck changed when the King's only legitimate son Prince Vuna Takitakimālohi died leaving her father as King Tupou's heir. She married her paternal first cousin Prince Siaʻosi Fatafehi Toutaitokotaha (1842–1912), the fourth Tuʻi Pelehake, grandson of Tupou I through his mother Princess Salote Pilolevu Mafileo, her aunt. They had one son, the future King George Tupou II. Her father died 1879, her elder brother Uelingatoni Ngū died childless in 1885 and the same fate befelled her younger brother Nalesoni Laifone 1889. She became the heir to the throne after her last brother's death in 1889 and held the status of heir apparent for two months before her own death. It would be her son who would succeeded his great-grandfather in 1893. Thus the royal lineage passed through her. Her son's second daughter Princess ʻElisiva Fusipala Taukiʻonetuku is named after her.
Christine

She probably didn't have one, if she lived in the 1700s. Very few Tongans, if any, had more than one name before Christianity arrived in the 1820s and people got converted and baptized, usually with Biblical names. Elisiva sounds like a true Polynesian name, as does Ofu, rather than a Biblical or English name.

Hello Wayne,
Our Great x4? grand mother never left Tonga. Our Great x4? grand father left Manua while still a teen under obscure circumstances and later married the King's sister. There is an island in Tonga named after his homeland (Ofu). When our Elisiva died our Puni...came back home with all of his children. I think it should be in the late 1700s to the early 1800s

Natalie, I'm working on my niece's husband's family history. I don't have a lot of info but one of his relatives is Mele Latu who married Inoke Finau. One of their 6 children is Fine ( male) who married Papa. I know Fine is dead as Mele and Inoke probably are. My new nephew's family descends from another child, Sione Matagi and his wife Lata i Eua. Could our Mele and Fine be connected? Although your Fine is female I think. I know the family lived on 'Eua and the main island. Thanks for your help.
