Hi there,

I am building my family history and have quite a lot of information about the both the predecessors and descendants of William Cameron born Leith, Scotland who was married to Elizabeth Winton of Ardersier Scotland and moved toTottenham, London, England, where he was Headmaster of a school for 40 years, and would be willing to share this with others interested in the Camerons.

In turn I would be fascinated to know about the history of Alexander Donald Cameron's life in Tonga. He was born 21st July 1874 in Tottenham, London and married Clara Cocker, born 5th March 1885, in Launceston, Tasmania on 27th March 1903. They had 6 children - Elizabeth, Muriel, Dorothy, Robert, Truro or Truda Kelela and Evan.

Hoping someone can help

Penny

From 1915 to 1917 he belonged to the Patriotic League of Britons overseas in Vavau, and donated one guinea to the Kitchener Ma\emorial Fund

In 1920 he applied for a British passport at the British Consu's office in Tonga. He was aged 46, born 21 july 1873. He was a merchant, manager, in Neiafu, Vavau. a British subject , going on holiday to Samoa, Fiji, and Australia.

These facts come from the British Consular Papers, Western Pacific High Commission archive.

Penny,
A book has recently been published in NZ "Teaching in Tonga"- A Wesleyan Missionary's diary 1927-1930, which is the diary of a young NZ woman- Dorothy Ferguson-who worked in Tonga at that time. It contains mention of the Cameron family and a few photographs, and shows the daily life of a European woman missionary there. The Camerons' life would be different, but similar in some ways.

The publisher is a descendent. Her address is Alice Hunt

New Year, new plans, so tonight I started the chase! My father was also Alexander Donald Cameron...born 11th January 1915 died 30th November 1988. He was, I understand , the youngest son of William and Clara. I remember meeting Evan when I was small and also Kelalla in about 1971... she was a young woman. I have 2 sisters details as follows
Elizabeth Margaret born 1946
Catriona Jean born 1949
Alison Claire born 1953
My father left Tonga when he was 18 and joined the British Army and came to UK and met my mother during WW2 My father came to Australia around 1980 after retiring and I believe that he stayed with Evelyn. I have a copy of the marriage certificate of his parents Alexander and Clara which he obtained in order to visit OZ. He did not have his own birth certificate for some reason. He never spoke about Tonga to us.
Hope you are as excited as I am about this.
Best wishes Catriona

Hi Catriona....Got your email...I met your dad Don ( and he was also my uncle) when he came to visit Australia. I only met him once when we had a typical Aussie picnic on one of Sydneys beautiful river flats that was hosted by our uncle Dugald (snr) ...I remember uncle Don was in the Artillery during his service in the Army..As was I for a while...We had a great time....We actually look a bit alike..especially on top of the head !!! Regards Dugald (Jnr)...Dugie to all of my family....

Hello Dugald,
If you are who I believe you to be then I can say that I met you and your children in Queensland back around 1978. I am Gordon Alexander Cameron, son of Dugald Ian Winton Cameron born in Vava'u in 1921. I recall that my father and his second son Brandon visited you in Townsville back in 1993. If I have all this right, please contact me at my email address- gee72cee@hotmail.com

Best of wishes

Hello Dugie, I was thrilled to hear from you and also Gordon Alexander. I knew NOTHING about my fathers life until this week. I was under the impression that he was the youngest in the family! I need lots of info especially would like to know why my father left and never went home... why did he never ever speak of his parents??? Iam also very interested in the Tongan ancestry. Are there still Camerons living in Tonga?
Best wishes from a very long lost cousin
Catriona
