My great-great-great grandfather was a man from Portugal who settled and married in Tonga. His name was Tone or possibly Antonio. There's few Tongan-Portuguese families I know of. There's mine and the Santos family. I just can'f figure out his lastname. If anyone has any information, feel free to email me anytime at kntuakoi@ucdavis.edu

Lina,
My son-in-law is interested in trying to trace his SANTOS Portugese/Tongan ancestors but doesn't have much information. other than the English name of his grandfather, "Freddie" Santos who had a son by Ofa Feao whose name was "Robert" (Lopeti), born in Tonga Tapu, Tonga. Do you have any info at all on the Santos family? Any names that are remembered?

Aloha, Judy in Honolulu

According to an item in the exhibition Siu ki Moana in the National Library, Wellington, NZ , a man named Josaiah Santos who was born about 1866/88 in St Vincent, Canary Islands, stowed away on a ship to Argentina about 1910. He was employed there by the Union Steamship Company and came to New Zealand , where he was naturalized in 1912. His papers were on display.
From NZ he went to Tonga, and married Mele Ikahihifo, from Fatai, Tongatapu, about 1913. He had several children- Elizabeth, Hame(Abraham), Manuel, Ane- Maria, and Fred. This would have been in the late 1910s and the 1920s

Corrections; his name was Joaquin/m Santos, which became Soakime Santos, and he came from St vincent, Cape Verde Islands. He apparently had 21 children in Tonga!

Hello Again Folks,

Well, I am the originator of this post as well. I finally found out that my great-great-great-grandfather was a man named Joao Manuel who later was known as Tone or Sio Manuele in Tongan. He settled in Mt. Talau Neiafu, Vava'u Tonga some time in the earlier part of the 1800s aparently he came on a Spanish ship that visited Tonga at the turn of the 19th century. I wonder in you could give any more details, Chris. My first cousin is also a Santos, through his mother and because of circumstances he carries that name and he lives in New Zealand with his little family. I would just like to express thanks and malo 'aupito to the people who worked on the Lyden thread including you Chris because since then I've connected with all of my long lost relatives and I'm planning on seeing some of them this year when I visit New Zealand and Australia and of course our homeland of Tonga.

God Bless,

Katrina N.T.T. Tu'akoi

Hi Lina

Yes i have a Portuguese heritage unfortunately my knowledge is limited.

My great great great grandfather came from Portugal on the Port o Prince ship which came to Vavau in Tonga. His name was Jose Manuel but im not 100% sure how accurate this is.

Please let me know if you anything more to share.

According to William Mariner's book "Tonga Islands" there were 8 Hawaiians and 52 others on board the Port au Prince when she`arrived in Tonga in 1805. 20 of them were ashore when the ship was attacked,and 26 were killed by the Tongans of Lifuka, Haapai.

Those who survived the massacre were;
1) William Mariner,(returned to England);
2) 8 Hawaiians;
3)Tuitui-another Hawaiian;

4)John Scotland- gunner,
5)Jacob Myers-seaman,
6)William Ford- seaman,
(these last 3 escaped in an open boat, and probably perished at sea, as a paddle from the boat was later found washed ashore;

9)William Towel- Captain's steward, who returned to England;
10)John Hearsey-sailmaker,(accidently drowned in Fiji);
11)Robert FitzGerald- boy
(Towel and FitzGerald left on an Australian ship);

12)Hugh Williams-seaman;
13)Jeremiah Higgins- Landsman;
14)John Parish- landsman
(these 3 were rescued by an American ship)

15)John Watson- seaman(went to Fiji);
16)Samuel Carlton- boatswain;
17)George Wood- carpenter's mate;
18)William Singleton- landsman; (left on a ship)
19)Alexander Macay- boy;
20)James Waters- ordinary seaman(refused to leave Tonga);
21)Nicholas Blake- seaman
22)William Brown- boy
23)Thomas Eversfield- boy (returned to England);
24)John Roberts- "black native of Tortola"- boy;
25)William Stevenson, aged 2(a child from Oahu, Hawaii,being taken to relatives in Scotland, adopted by the late Tongan king's daughter.)
26)Robert Brown- cooper;
27)Thomas Dawson-seaman;(returned to England)
28)Thomas Brown- landsman;
29)Manuel Perez- seaman;
30)Josef- a black;
...................

I wonder what happened to little William Stevenson!

Hi Christine

Thank you for your response it has been most helpful.

I am aware of the name given by the king was "Moala Tui Hele" to my protugese ancestor. Are you able to confirm if his actual name was Manuel Perez or Jose Manuel. I am now trying to locate where in Portugal he came from.
