Hi there I was wondering if you could help me.

I am looking for marriage details for Walter George Quensell and Emma Hoeft c1917? As far as I can tell they were married in Pangai but I may have that wrong. Walter was born c1886 in Germany and emma is his second wife and was born c1887. I am looking for parent details for Walter, I have parent details for Emma. I would also appreciate any personal information that is available. I beleive Walter died in 1956 but I dont know if this was in Tonga or Aucklan\d.

I would also appreciate any information on Walters first marriage to Sela Tuipulotu in 1907 also in Pangai I believe. Again I am looking for parental information and any other personal information that it contains.

If you have the time I am also interested in Emma's parents marriage. He was Karl August Heinrich Hoeft and he married Siniua Peau (aka Beau or Ball). She was born c 1871 and he was born c1862. Again any personal information would be much appreciated.

Anyhting you might know about any of these families would also be appreciated as you arte a mine of information!

Many thanks

A bit to start with;
In may 1916, a listing was made of all enemy aliens in Tonga, by the British Consul. This included all German subjects, including Tongan wives of Germans, who were thus German.
The list includes;

in Haafeva, Haapai;
Walter George Quensell, age 36, born He??ustedt, Germany; nationality German; trader; male; commenced residence in Tonga July 1903; Military service- Marine Extra Reserve;

George Dugald Quensell, age 8, born Haapai; nationality German, born in Haapai.
August William Henry Quensell, aged 6, born Haapai, nationality German, born in Haapai
Anna Elfriede Quensell, aged 4, born in Tonga, nationality German, born in Tonga
- no wife or mother given for these children.

In Lifuka, Haapai;
Emma L Hoeft, age 20 born Tonga, nationality German, baker, female, born on Tonga

In DH&PG premises, Lifuka, Haapai
Charles Hoeft, age 54, born Germany, nationality -; yardman; malecommenced residence in Tonga 1883; no military service

In Folua, Haapai, Albert E Hoeft age 26 born Tonga, nationality German, trader, male born on Tonga, no military service
........
No Mrs Hoefts mentioned

George Quensell of Bagai married Sela Tuibulotu of Bagai, in Bagai, Haabai April 5, 1906
Wesleyan Registrsations of Marriage- Haapai
no other details given..

It would appear that Sela either died or left George Quensell sometime after Anna's birth in 1912, and he remarried later.

Note the changes in nationality; To start with they were all German, whether they were part Tongan or not.
Then after ww1 all Germans in Tonga became stateless, although still German by nationality, and had to apply for a certificate of Identity any time they wanted to travel.

Later they called themselves German/ Tongan.
Now they are Tongan by nationality.
They have never been British.

"Photo" means a photo of the person is attached to the application. I can get copies of these, but have to pay for them, so must charge you.

B) British Passports
No Quensells

That is all I have, and I don't think there is more available. Because they were Germans, not much about them is in the British records, and nothing in the Tongan Government records, as they did not register foreigners. There does not seem to be any German records in Tonga.

The Wesleyan Church did marry and baptize foreigners, and I have given the only one I could find.
