Just saw on an internet site that it seems all the BMD records from around 1796 and 1804 on Norfolk Island have been lost. I too have a connection to the Barrisford/Berresford family - albeit a little remote - John and Hannah's daughter Mary married Michael Purdon; then their daughter Elizabeth married my G-G-grandfather's brother, Jonathan Beale in Tasmania. We are off to Norfolk Island next week - looking forward to that. The only thing I have are the dates of death of Mary Oakley and George Woods - Mary on 27 September 1796 and George in April 1796.

Mary Ann Branch, dau of William and Mary, died on Norfolk Island on 11th Feb 1833 (NOT 1853). Her father William was a convict supervisor, (a retired gunner of the Royal Artillery)

A photo of Mary Ann's headstone on Norfolk Island can be seen on my tree, together with extensive info re this family.

I have just received information on a relative..
Michael Connolly age 25 born in County Wicklow charged in Dublin of Highway robbery, he arrived on the "Guildford" in 1829. According to information on Irish convicts to New South Wales,he was sent to Norfolk Island and died in 1844 in the Macleay River district.
Would there be any information available on why he was sent to Norfolk Island and details of his life there.

Sarah (b 1801) was the daughter of Sarah Wise and George White - her mother formed a relationship with John Roberts after her birth and Sarah took the name Roberts.

I am interested to find any literature about life on Norfolk Island for convicts during the second settlement. I had an ancestor, John Henry Emerson, who was a convict on Norfolk Island from 1828 to 1834.

Love to know more about daily life, conditions, punishments, etc.

You are not related to Henry the convict but definitely related to me. Firstly, my records show that MAY WARLAND was the daughter of James Warland b. 1863 in Weymouth and James was the son of Henry Warland b.1820 in Hampreston, Dorset. Went to sea and made his home in Weymouth when he married Sarah Otter- Hawkins in 1846.That info seems to line up with your search. We also have ALICE MAY WARLAND b.1894 daughter of George Henry Warland, brother of James Warland. George Henry was my Great grandfather.
Henry the Convict has now been identified and I add a thread to the now Known life of a Convict. We are not related at least not directly.

The 50th (Queen's Own) Regiment of Foot was an infantry regiment of the British Army from 1755 to 1881.

A second battalion was raised, serving from 1804 to 1814; it saw action at Walcheren, as did the first battalion.

After a battle in the Peninsular War, the regiment was nicknamed the Dirty Half-Hundred; the regiment had worn uniforms with black facings, and when they wiped sweat away with their cuffs the dye stained their faces. (Half-hundred is a play on "fifty")

In 1827 they were retitled 50th (Duke of Clarence's) Regiment of Foot, in honour of the future William IV of the United Kingdom, and then as the 50th (Queen's Own) Regiment of Foot in 1831 in honour of William's wife, Queen Adelaide.

They travelled to Australia in detachments in the 1830s as escorts to prisoners, and then to India in 1841

Trying to find birth record for John/James Best, born on Norfolk Island approx,1836, to Robert Best 1805 and Mary Bicket, married 1818 in Monkton Ayrshire Scotland.Roberts served with the 50th foot regiment on Norfolk Island between 1830/1838 appox, he was sent back to England due to illness soon after John's birth, though to where I can't find out. I picked John up on the 1841 Scottish Census, he married a Mary Kirkwood 1856,later a Margaret Rodgers.
Can anyone help with where I can find records of anyone who served or were born in Norfolk Island sround these dates?

Alice May Warland b.1894, is the daughter of George Henry Rogers Warland born in Weymouth, Dorset 1854. He married Emily Myrtle Clark b.1853 in Portsea, Hants. They married in 1879, in London. They had 8 children and John Henry Warland b.1880 is the sister of Alice May. John Henry is my Grandfather and George Henry Rogers Warland my G-Grandfather. I wasa not aware that Alice May married and therefore the information you provided is very helpful.
My mother, Florence Anne Warland b.1902 is a daughter of John Henry and Annie Florence Patten and the family is from Portland, Dorset.

Please take a look at the public tree Warrens of Wrestlingworth and Look up Florence Anne Warland to find the other details.

By the way the convict Henry Warland is not a direct relation of ours and we have since completed the story.

I am looking for any extra information on the Convict James Carley and the conditions in which he lived on Norfolk Island.

James Carley is my Great Great Grandfather.

I have looked at the Archives Office of Tasmania's records for James Carley.

As far as I know, James was on Norfolk Island between 1844 and 1847. He arrived on the ship Blundell and departed on the ship Governor Phillip for Tasmania.

Is there any other records and possibly any photographs. Any information would be great.

I can now advise you of another family connection as my wife's Grandfather was Harry James Wrland 1891-1964 and he lived next door to her through all her childhood. His father was James warland 1862-1935. Have rserached most of the family but having trouble authenticatinf Sarah Otter Hawkins family tree, sevveral hav put one on ancestry and not all agree! We have authenciated track up via Harriet Hodder - Harriet Keats - her mother Ann Bussell - traced as we have Ann Bussell's writing desk and her mothers necklengarved necklace given when Ann was born in 1808.

Missing Convict - Henry Warland b. 1820 Wimborne, Dorset.

Henryhas subsequently been identified as Henry J.Warland b.1823,although the initial J. or name John was never shown on any of the papers relating to the person as a convict. He was son of John Warland b.1798 and Anne Marie Stickland b.1897 and was one of 8 children. He was married at the time of his conviction to Sarah Reynolds and they had a daughter. Henry Waralnd was given a conditional pardon in Hobart, Tasmania in 1851. No further record is found of him in Tasmania. It is possible he made his way back to England and by then his wife had died. He married in London a second time and the records support that he may have returned and settled in Fulham, London.

I am still unsure where Henry fits into my family tree (if at all) but my grandmother is Alice May Warland in Dorset in 1894 married John william henry honess jones in 1915 and died in 1979. Her parents were James Warland and Harriet annie
Do any of these details fit anywhere in your research ?

I am looking for any records or information on William Hodson my ggrandfather who spent some yrs on Norfolk before going to Australia-probably between 1906-1924? He was a gentlemen accountant, hotel owner in BC Canada before going to Norfolk and loved sailing and horses. There was supposed to be a picture of him in the Museum with a carriage or buggy? He would have been in his late 40's and 50's.
Would appreciate any census,directory information,etc that
might show he was there and what he did for those yrs.

I understand her father (William BRANCH) was a member of the military. Dorothy Barrisford born on Norfolk to land holders John Barrisford and wife Hannah.
Convicts. Mary Thominson Oakley died on the island 1796
George Wood died on the island 1796
They had a son George Oakley born on the island 1791

in 1838 and died in the General Hospital of Norfolk Island and was buried 19th Feb. 1843. However I cannot seem to find a record on-line re this. pls direct me if you can.

It is of no use in tracing family trees, but you might be interested that I have Emily Rossiter's school copy book dated 1872, and her history note books (undated).
She knew who W.Pitt Earl of Chatham was, and Edmund Burke (one of the most elegant orators and statesmen any age has produced), amongst others.

I am guessing that you haven't seen his conduct record - you can view it online at http://search.archives.tas.gov.au/ImageViewer/image_viewer.h... He returned to Tas and his Conditional Pardon was approved in April 1851. He would not have been allowed to return to England under a Conditional Pardon, however this doesn't mean that he didn't. His indent is not available online, but you should contact the archives office for a copy as they usually list names of parents/siblings/spouse. http://www.archives.tas.gov.au/reference

I have found two newspaper reports of his trial if you would like them, but the only family info is that he was from Wimborne Minster and married with two children (though his conduct record says one child) His sentence was commuted from life to 7 years. Thank you.Yes, she lived on Norfolk for 86 years! and had 5 children but no one knows if she was actually married. I will try your suggestion but if you come across any other info please let me know. Someone must know something.Kaiee was born on Norfolk in 1888 and died in 1974 there so it's strange there isn't someone who is acquainted with her. a real mystery!

I am not connected in any way, but in looking at your problem, I presume that Kaiee lived on Norfolk Island, and married? there. All the Anglican marriage and bith records, plus banns and burials,for Norfolk Island, are available as PAMBU microfilms. So are the 7th Day Adventist records
PMB 423-C of E records 1871-1971
PMB 425 7th Day Adventist records 1891-1970
THere are also other films from the Norfolk Island Historical Society.
I suggest you get in touch with PAMBU to ask where the nearest library to you which holds these films is.

Boyd has already sent me the info he has but this is the only gap.ie who your gg grandfather is. My children's grandfather was kenneth, son of Elizabeth, daughter of Kaiee. Boyd has sent me an all inclusive list of all descendants and the only thing missing is the name of Kaiee's husband(s)/partner(s). Please let me know if you find anything.
