James Mackie - Aberdeen to Wellington 1874

Classification: Query
Surnames: Mackie Morrison
I am trying to find out what became of James Mackie. He was born 1854, Aberdeen Scotland
Father: James Mackie Mother: Margaret Mary Mitchell Gordon
Sailed to New Zealand on the Star of India from Aberdeen July 1874 arriving in Wellington November 1874
Married: 30 December 1889 to Jessie Morrison
Children with Jessie: James (1877-1937), Mary Minnie (1879-1943), Eva (1881-1966), Ellen (1883 -?) and Lena (1884-1884)

I have found a few references in paperspast to court cases re Jessie chasing child support. They mention that James was an accomplished Tailor but that his drinking was a problem and that he 'stepped out' with other ladies.
There are references to their having lived together before marriage starting out in Oamaru, then in Wellington but he had left Wellington by October 1882. I believe he went from Wellington to Palmerston North.

He is not mentioned in any of the Marriage or Death records for the children nor Jessie's death notice. (By 1911 she was in Auckland)

There are a whole bunch of James Mackie's around these dates so I have not been able to confirm anything definite for him post October 1882

Does anyone have a James Mackie in their tree that fits this information or recommendations on a next step?
