Hi Stewart,

"In my experience it's fairly normal to refer to married women by their maiden names in death notices, on memorial inscriptions and the like."

Not in New Zealand. These days at least, you're more likely to see "Jane DOE, nee BLOGGS", if there is a reference to her maiden name.

Nor is it customary here to keep the maiden name as a "middle" name like the Americans seem to, eg Jane Bloggs DOE. Some women hyphenate the two names, eg Jane BLOGGS-DOE.

That isn't to say that one of these conventions wasn't used by the woman you're looking for. Just don't assume that a custom from one country is a custom in another. :-)

"The death seems to have been registered by the medical attendant rather than a relative... so I'm wondering if this is the reason these details are sketchy."

That is normal here, the funeral director is usually the one to register the death, using information supplied by the grieving family.

Is the informant's name readable on your printout? If you share it with us we may be able to help you further.

Hope this helps. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy Howard
--
Kaiwaka, Northland, New Zealand
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wendyh65/

Smaill and Bagley

I work at the City Archives in Malmo and am researching the 10 allied airmen who are buried here. These men are virtually anonymous today and I think they deserve to be remembered, not only for their brave sacrifice, but also for who they were. This is why I am tryng to find out as much as possible about each of them.

One of them is William Bagley Smaill, born in Dunedin in 1912, the son of Charles Stewart Smaill and Margaret, nee Bagley.Charles Stewart Smaill was born in 1882, the son of William Smaill (b.1839 in Scotland-d.1905 in Kaitangata) and Magdalene Maud Stewart (1849-1913). His wife Margaret Bagley was born in 1881, daughter of Benjamin Bagley (1845-1830) and Annie Grounds (1856-1941).

William Bagley Smaill volunteered for the RNZAF in 1941 and was trained as a Lancaster bomber pilot. In February 1944 he was posted to no 7 (Pathfinder) Squadron (RAF) where he piloted many successful operations and was awarded the DFC. On his 43rd operation on 27 August 1944, to Kiel in Germany, he and his crew were reported missing. His body was found washed ashore in southern Sweden on 22 September 1944 and he was buried here in my hometown of Malmo.

Unfortunately I have come up with very little about William Bagley Smaill, His parents are (of course) both deceased, his three sisters have also passed away and neither of them had any children. SO I am hoping that there could be cousins, or cousins children still in the Dunedin area who will remember the family. The big question is: can you in any way help me locate any living relatives???

He and his family moved to Auckland around 1918, but I think their relatives mostly stayed in the Dunedin area.

The aunts and uncles on his father Charles Stewart Smaill´s side are:

1: Madeleine Maud Smaill
1 May 1878-7 Oct 1950
Maybe married in 1914 to James Rettie Forbes 1881-1938
Possible child James Smaill Forbes, 1920-20/4 1976 Invercargill

2: Isabella Thomson Smaill
3 May 1880-5 Oct 1960
MAybe married in 1914 to Arthur John France 1886-1965

3: William Jardine Smaill
1884-1884, 9 months old

4: William Cochran Smaill
1886-21 April 1961 Timaru
wife Betsy Campbell Smaill, died 10 April 1969 Timaru, 81 yrs old

5: Margaret Jane Smaill10/2 1888-1/12 1920

6: Walter Jardine Smaill
18/9 1889-26/6 1956 died in Dunedin
Maybe married in 1914 to Dorothy Winmill,1891 -1967

His mother Margaret Bagley was the daughter of Benjamin Bagley and his second wife Annie Grounds. She had many siblings:

Half-siblings:
1: Amelia Bagley
1870-1956

2: Benjamin Bagley
1872-1945
married in 1896 to Mabel McMillan
Children:
Mabel Joyce, 1898-1903
Cedric John, 1896-1966. married to Kathleen Grace 1896-1966
Agnes Beryl, 1899
Harold George Whittingham, 1908-1969

3: George Bagley
1873-1960
married in 1904 to Eliza Prictor
Child:
Nora Lesley, 1909-1916

4: Mary Bagley
1875-1960

Full siblings
5: Hellen Bagley
1876-????

6: John Dudley Bagley
1876-1959

7: Harriet Ann Bagley
1880-1896

8: Jessie Elizabeth Gilchrist Bagley
1883-1950
Married in 1904 to John Ernest Bridger 1887-1957
Child: Pleasance Anna, 1905

9: Richard Bagley
1885-1960
Maybe married in 1917 to Violet Emily Doleman 1893-1959

10: Fanny Bagley
1888-???
married in 1912 to William Arthur Brown

11: Alice Grounds Bagley
4/7 1890-1981
married in 1911 to Robert Maynard Gurr 14/10 1884- 1974

12: James Harold Bagley
1893-1972 died in Dunedin
married in 1922 to Emmie Margaret Roy 29/3 1895-1980

13: Eric Alexander Bagley
1895-1978
married in 1923 to Ruth Alison Gardiner 25/9 1901-1987

14: Grace Bagley
1898-
married in 1920 to John Richard Scott

Any help at all that you can give me will be most appreciated.

Sincerely.
Anette Sarnas
Archives Assistant
Malmo City Archives
I have recently come across the following death notice in the Otago Witness from 1905:

"LINDSAY. - On the 16th October, at her daughters residence, Burnside, Helen Kilpatrick, the beloved wife of William Lindsay; in her seventy-sixth year. Paisley, Manchester and Melbourn papers please copy."

I am trying to find Helen Kilpatrick, the aunt of my Great Great Grandfather, William Lindsay Kilpatrick.

I have a lot of other bits of circumstantial evidence that all point to this beig her.

Can anyone give me some pointers on NZ BMD records? I found my way to the official website: http://bdmhistoricalrecords.identityservices.govt.nz

And I now have a reg number for the record I'm after 1905/7281.

Am I going to have to pay 26 NZD for the certificate (on an informed hunch), or are there other sources for BMDs?

TIA

Stewart Ritchie

Many many thanks for your info! Concerning the "other" marriage of Emma Sophia Ruston: there is something wrong here: possibly a transposition of names with a sister(?). Concerning the two Walters - there are definitely two (of this I am certain). The VERY interesting snippet is that the one who died in 1901 had death reported in North Otago Deaths - WHY HERE? There are a number of researchers trying to find what heppened to a Walter K - father of James Anderson K. This Walter K: b 1820 in Norfolk; to Aust c 1853; son James A K born 1859 in Warrnambool. James to NZ c. 1882 (no details at all). There is a MINOR hint that Walter came to NZ, but nothing at all concrete. I have the Walter K who died in Gisborne - have his archive records.... are THEY the same? There is some good info that Walter K (father of James) died at age 84 (= d o d 1904) from an accident - absolutely nothing else known. James died in Seacliff, and I have his full medical records. Are you a "professional researcher", or...?
Again, thanks for the info! Let me know if I can assist you.
Roger Knights

Thanks for your reply.

I am particularly looking for a Helen Kilpatrick who married William Lindsay in 1853 (before vanishing completely from the Scottish census records after 1861), I have always assumed she emigrated.

Helen would have been born in Paisley, Scotland. Her age would have made her 76 in 1905.

In my experience it's fairly normal to refer to married women by their maiden names in death notices, on memorial inscriptions and the like.

Anyway, I have already done as you suggested and ordered the 'printout', although it just adds to the general confusion as it gives her father's name as John Kilpatrick (occupation 'Gentleman') and no clue as to her mother.

The death seems to have been registered by the medical attendant rather than a relative... so I'm wondering if this is the reason these details are sketchy.

On the plus side, it confirms she had been resident in NZ for 40 years, which would tie in with rest of the picture I'm building up. And it gives the gender and age of 4 children (some of which would have been born in NZ). I know that the eldest child was born in Scotland.

Thanks again for your advice...

Hi Stewart

Isn't this (1905) lady's name "Helen Kilpatrick LINDSAY" ?

It doesn't necessarily follow that her maiden name was "Kilpatrick" ?? (She may well have been
Helen Kilpatrick SMITH or JONES or somesuch, before marrying Mr LINDSAY) ??

When purchasing any NZ BDM record, you should request a printout (rather than a certificate). A printout generally offers more information and is also less costly than a certificate (you'll find also the NZ BDM now recommend this "printout" option, on their website).

I don't see any Helen KILPATRICK marriages on the NZ index
- nor a William LINDSAY marrying anyone named "Helen". That possibly suggests that Helen K. LINDSAY (above), arrived in New Zealand as a married woman ?

Does the Helen you are seeking, have a connection with Paisley or Manchester ?

What other "bits of circumstantial evidence" do you have ?

I just had a quick look at the archives and I didn't find a index for Emma Goble (the online database is not complete) however I did find someone who was possibly related: given the Brown surname and Goble as a given name.

BROWN Ernest Goble - Dunedin - Retired 1986 - 1986
agency series accession box / item record part alternative no.
DAAC 9076 D349 21 759/86
http://www.archway.archives.govt.nz/
This may give details in the probate to further family names.

In error I mentioned in my last post of Emma's sons in WWI, however they would be her grandsons.
For the sake of being exact... if you are writing history articles or a family history....

I see the story talks about rabbit hunting BELOW the mouth.. from Tuapeka... the area may be known as 'the island'... however please do not confuse the area towards the Tuapeka Mouth as being 'Roxburgh' as The Island at Roxburgh is "up" the Clutha, north west of Tuapeka, not "down" the Clutha or south.

Can someone look up The Otago Daily Paper, around 21 May 1940, for news of a shooting of Rebecca Hewitt, at Naseby. She was my aunt, and her death cert says ''Verdict of Jury, death caused by gunshot wound self inflicted while in a depressed state of mind'' The family always said her husband, Moses, murdered her. There were 2 young sons who were apparently ill treated.
Dorothy
