Hey Bea

I started researching earnestly about 6 years ago and I find it fascinating bringing my relatives alive again by discovering stories, photos and even a number of old diaries and journals that shed light on the hardships, adventures and joys they had as pioneers. I'm sure I would have been on the first ship out to the new frontiers, seeking adventure and exciting experiences.

I don't mind helping out, especially on information in Christchurch. It is interesting that your Peat's lived very close to my Great Grandfather and went to school with many of my relatives. I'm sure their paths crossed.

Email me and we'll delve further. tony.fuller@clear.net.nz

Tony in Christchurch
Hi Tony,

You truly have a gift and so willing to share with others. I now know that the Peat children did only go to Marshland School.
Thanks you for the photo of Irwell School pupils in 1934.

I’ve started doing family research a few years back, and now at the age of 74 years, every new finding is still like finding a gold nugget. My only regret is not starting sooner.
One meets so many fantastic folks along the way like you Tony, like one big family all working toward the same goal, starting our family tree for future generations to come.
The past few years I have tried giving back to many friends, it's always a pleasure watching their heritage unfold and the joy it gives.
I still have a lot to learn and reach out to someone special like yourself for that gold nugget that is waiting to be found and giving me encouragement to go on.

Special Thanks for sharing,

Bea from Canada

Hey Bea

Yes, William's death is mentioned many times in the old newspapers. In one of the articles it said he left behind 10 children. The three that I mentioned are listed in the old birth death and marriage records. Not all births were recorded back in those days.

Rhodes Swamp later became Marshland (where I grew up, on Marshland Road). I have not heard of Ferndalton but there is a suburb in Chch called Fendalton which is about 5km west of Marshland.

Irwell is a very small country town about 30km south of Christchurch between Lincoln and Leeston and has a School. http://nzetc.victoria.ac.nz/tm/scholarly/tei-Cyc03Cycl-t1-bo...

I did see the memoriam for Eliza in Papers Past, it was very nice.

If they had lived in Marshland, they may be in the Marshland School rolls. I have some of them as my mother, her siblings and I were schooled there. I also have many of the old school photos and I attended their Centenary in the 1990's. I am down south (Te Anau) working at the moment but will be back in Christchurch tomorrow night. I'll check my records then.

Attached is a pic of the Irwell School pupils in 1934. Eliza and the children may have moved to Irwell after William died.

Tony

Hi Tony,

Since you last contacted me I have been doing some searching, re William & Eliza (Leach) Peat.

Have managed to find the news paper write up of Eliza probate record, also about William death when taking strychnine, is Ferndalton and Rhodes Swamp (later called Marshland) the same place?

You also mentioned that they had ten children William (b.1871) Mary Ann (b.1872) and Catherine (b.1869) are three that you named. I have found a newspaper clipping of Irwell School that include a William Peat, Mary Jane Peat & Catherine Peat attend this school, would this be the same children you mentioned?
Do you have any idea if this school is in the Rhodes Swamp (later called Marshland) area.

Found this lovely newspaper clipping:

Peat: - In loving memory of Eliza Peat,
who died at Marshland, Nov. 28, 1891.
All you who have a mother
Oh, love her while you may.
She will not always linger near;
Too soon she’ll pass away.
We never knew our mother’s worth,
Or of the love she gave
Until within the cold, cold earth
Her silent form was laid.
Inserted by her loving children.
What a shame there was no names added.

Bea in Canada

Left London 18 Dec 1862, arrived Lyttelton, Canterbury 21 Apr 1863. Listed in the NZ immigration passenger list as Eliza Leech aged 19 (therefore born abt 1843) travelling with Mary and George Blair.

Eliza Leach married William Peat (b.1843 d. 9 Mar 1885) in 1868, she died in Christchurch on 28 Nov 1891 aged 47.

They had ten children, William (b.1871) Mary Ann (b.1872) and Catherine (b.1869) are the only ones I can confirm.

She died in probate and her assets where sold at auction on 21 Apr 1892. She owned a 16 acre farm on Rhodes Swamp (later called Marshland) with horses, cows, pigs, a four bedroom house, furniture and a sewing machine.

William committed suicide by taking strychnine in a state of despondency. He drank it in front of his wife and endured "great agony" and died half an hour later.

Thanks so much for this! It has clarified things for me. The original passenger list is very confusing. There are still missing passengers as there are other documents which say they travelled on the Glentanner, but looks like the Patterson family were not one of them! Thanks so much
Belinda

Hello again Belinda, I found your web site tried to post a message to you there, but it appears not to have worked, so I'll just repeat here that Charles Paterson and wife Mary, who was my 2x ggm, but not emigrate in 1857, but eventually did so 3 years later in 1860 aboard the Matoaka with 5 children, and Mary's daughter/ William Forbes' sister Jane did not in fact emigrate at all, instead marrying in Scotland in 1864 and producing g 9 children there with her husband James Milne.

Re the Glentanner passenger list, I don't have it in front of me but am pretty sure that the name William Forbes appears on the list of single men . William was a brother of my ancestor Charles Forbes, and if you email me directly at jofeath@bigpond.net.au, I can give you a contact address for one of his direct descendants, who would probably be able to fill you in on his life after he arrived in NZ.
Hi Jo

I am currently researching the ship Glentanner and it appears your ancestors were on the ship, but not on the official passenger list. I can send you the documents to prove it. If you could contact me it would be much appreciated as I wish to write a small biography on the family.
Kind regards
Belinda

It shouldn't matter where in the world you are for accessing the BDM site; I've corresponded with many people overseas who use it regularly. I've clicked on your link just now and it works fine for me.

Note that they're saying on the home page today that there will be planned maintenance on the site 9am to 2pm Sunday (NZ time), so don't try it then.

Go to the site, click on Search in the menu down the left-hand side, then select the type of event you want.

Each of the three types have requirements for minimum input, all need a start date and a surname. I usually type:

1/1/1840

to catch everything. The 1st of January 1840 is well before any registrations started in this country, and the system doesn't have a problem with it. Otherwise enter another date in the correct format (dd/mm/yyyy).

You can purchase copies of registrations on that site. Be sure to get the printout, not the legal certificate, for family history purposes. (I explain why at http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/NEW-ZEALAND/20...)

Do check at https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/dataCollected/ to see exactly what information should have been gathered at the time of the event. Some of the earlier registrations (such as marriages before 1880) don't contain sufficient data to be considered useful to us family historians, so it's a waste of money to buy a copy.

If you don't want to order online, or are dealing with more recent events that aren't on the historical site and don't have an iGovt registration, you can order via ordinary mail - go to Births, Deaths & Marriages (BDM, http://www.bdm.govt.nz/) and locate the appropriate form. Print the form, complete it with what you know, and send it off with your payment. You can also call and place an order over the phone.

If you are a member of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists (NZSG, http://www.genealogy.org.nz/) enquire at their Certificates Collection before making purchases at BDM. If they're holding what you're looking for, it is much cheaper.

If you are wanting more recent events that don't fit the "historical" definition of the BDM site, you need to go back to the older annual microfiche indexes, which go up to about 1990. These are found in libraries and genealogy groups around New Zealand, and in many repositories overseas.

After 1990 there were CDs instead of microfiche for a while, but these are rarer - I've never seen any of these myself, only heard about them.

Tell us where you are, and we may be able to tell you where you'll find a set of the microfiche near you. Or if you're an NZSG member you can use their Research Service to have the indexes looked up for you.

Hope this helps. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy

Hi Jenny,I`m trying to find details of my late Grandfather, but living in UK is proving difficult. Is there any possibility of assisting me at the Christchurch Library.
He was George Ernest Lee born Nov 1899 in Barkingside, Essex. My late father said his brother went to Auckland, and I`ve located records relating to a George Ernest Lee sailing to Auckland in Sept 1924 on SS Tainui maybe crew? Also found Probate reg no:- for George Ernest Lee shows retired 1976 Titirangi, but can`t access details. Also possible address at South Titirangi Road, Auckland.I wonder if I have any long lost relatives in N.Z.,but I fully appreciate if you are unable to help, as I do not want to inconvenience you. Many thanks Russ Lee

It is really interesting and you never know where the family tree will take you. My Dad use to say he had French and Irish roots and the spelling of his Father's name would have suggested he was right but instead the family so far goes back to Scotland and Lancashire not what I expected lol.
Are you doing the Harford as well, I have a ton of information on them.
If your Mum or Uncle are interested in touching base please give them my email address it is earthangelwing@hotmail.com My Mum is the second daughter and fourth child and most of her family has passed but Mum's memory had gone so my chance of getting information from her has gone.
Have a wonderful day
Barb x
PS I am in Australia where are you?

Hi

My mum is Ray and Elda's eldest, there are four siblings in the family, then ten grand children and so far five great grandchildren.

I just happend to stumble on this website the other night and was bored so signed up for the 14 day trial. I live overseas so just filled out what I could remember of the top of my head without asking Mum or my Uncle who has been studing all this - I've been surpised what that brought up. It's amazing the amount of info you can find.

Rea Harry & Sadie

Hi

I’m researching Harry Rea and his wife Sarah (Sadie).

Harry b.1874 was the son of John & Elizabeth Rea living at Stapleford Nottingham England in 1881 and the family moved to New Zealand after that date. Possibly to Greytown Wellington

Sarah born about 1871 in New Zealand a widow and previously married to Louis Dawson. She was the 3rd daughter of Thomas & Sarah Montague of Dunedin Otago. Some when she may have also lived in Christchurch Canterbury area.

It appears in 1923 Harry was proprietor of the Golden Age Hotel at Bluff and Sarah had also worked in hotels, although they both died in Dunedin in 1942 & 1939 respectively.

A Memoriam in 1943 for Harry came from his sisters & brothers Mrs. M Sutton, Mrs L Varnham, Mr L Rea (Wellington) Mr J Rea (Brisbane).

I’d like to know if Harry & Sarah had any children of their own or if a relative saved any photo’s of them or anything else you think might be of interest.

Thank you.
Janelle,
The information on his leaving to go to New Zealand, which I received from the sister who was still living in Liverpool, is that James William Olley (born 21 Oct 1896), married to Jane Elizabeth Basnette in 1922, went to New Zealand around 1950. With him was his five sons, one of whom was married with a small child.
James' father was George Walter Olley, born 1868.

Does any of this sound like the same family?
The Gordon Olley I corresponded with actually sent me the birth registration of Ada Louise Olley.
Frances

I believe it is the same family. I received some correspondence from your Uncle George several years ago. My mother-in-law was one of 7 children born to George Walter Olley and Ada Louise Simpson. She and her brother, Thomas, came to the US, first settling in Idaho and then in California. Her brother, George, died in WWI in France and her younger sister, Elizabeth, stayed in England. She also had another brother and sister who died very young.
I would be happy to share information with you.
Frances Cope
