Can anyone assist please?

The German Kreigsmarine captured and sank the vessell Holmwood on 25.11.1940 after the vessel had left the Chatham Islands for Lyttleton. About this time the RNZAF commenced maritime surveillance patrols using flying boats from the Chatham Islands. Civilians including my father a Post Office radio telegrapist were attested to the RNZAF to assist these maritime operations.

I am wondering if anyone has any knowledge at all of these operations and the civilian staff who assisted during the war years. Official records including those from the RNZAF Museum at Wigram and NZDF have little or no information or record at all. Post Office personnel staff records have all being lost.

Anything no how matter small the information would be appreciated.

I can be contacted on e mail at :- a.glennie@xtra.co.nz

Many thanks

Alex G

Hi Mary,
My name is Rod Grenell from Newcastle NSW Australia. I have been resarching my family history. is it possible to send me the article from the New Bedford Public Library? My great Great Grandfather was William Henry Grenell, a sailor, Born 1834 and was from America. I have a theory I am investigating to see if we have a family connection or not. It is all based around the death of your William Henry Grinnell, in 1864. From articles I have read it seems no record of his death is recorded and the cause of death not known. I have read he went back to sea. If you would like more details on my research please email me at grenell1@bigpond.com Regards Rod

Thanks for that. I'll file the idea away for future reference.

I have discovered that the child born in 1909 was, in fact, named Charles Roy Goyder Christie, but his father changed his name to Charles Roy Martin Christie the following year (I don't know why). I discovered this by applying for what I thought were 2 birth certificates. So the mystery is solved - there was only 1 child, but the name change got registered as a seperate birth.

Another little trap to watch out for!
If you have a look at the BDM website there is no birth registered in 1909 for Charles Roy Goyder Christie there is only one for Charles Roy Martin Christie in 1910 . The date of 1910 is the year the birth was registered not the year of birth. If you go to the BDM website https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/Home/ do a birth search for Charles Christie when the results come up click on order product, on the next screen enter 1 in the quantity box, click on add to basket then proceed to check out and it will show the date of event, then just empty your basket so you don't actually order the certificate but obtain the birth date information.

Regards Jenny

I have solved this mystery of the possible unrecorded death of a child. It seems the father of Charles Roy Goyder Christie b. 1909 changed his name to Charles Roy Martin Christie the following year, 1910. The second birth entry is therefore incorrect, and should not have been shown as a seperate entry.

Does anyone know if it's possible for a child to be buried on the Chatham Islands around 1909 without the death being recorded on the mainland?

I have the birth data for Charles Roy Goyder Christie, b. 1909 Wellington, but no death seems to have been recorded. His brother, Charles Roy Martin Christie was born the following year. With the similarity of names, it seems likely that the first Charles Roy died before the birth of his brother.

Are there any records of burials on the Chatham Islands? I believe the Christie family were on the Islands around 1909-1914. Is anyone travelling there willing to check out the graveyards for Charles Roy Goyder Christie, please?

There are several births listed at BDM Historical Records (http://bdmhistoricalrecords.identityservices.govt.nz/home/) for this couple with the spelling KIRDY. I didn't check alternate spellings, but you should, and look for the marriage there, too.

You can purchase copies of registrations online at that site (or by other means if you wish).
Sorry - not quite sure what you are referring to since I have not posted anything about a Captain Slingsby and am not researching this surname. I have put the official Beamish Book online within my Slogrove website and with the copyrightholder's consent. This shows the name of a John Slingsby whose daughter Hannah married Samuel George Beamish. Please advise. Vickie

Hi Vicki, I'm only interested in tracing the descendants of Capt. Francis Slingsby who arrived in Ireland in 1599. In my search I do remember coming across a Miss Slingsby marrying a Mr. Beamish of the Cork Brewing family. You should check out that Cork City family for your captain.
Good hunting.
N.MURPHY.

Thank you for suggesting this book. I have tried to order it in Canada but can only find "New Zealand, It's Land and It's People" by Michael King. There is much info on the Maori people but not the book you mentioned and nothing else by this author. Would you be able to scan me the page and picture mentioned - would be much appreciated if not too much trouble. Thanks. Vickie

Hi Sharron,
See p151 of the book 'Moriori-a people rediscovered' by the late Michael King. There's a photo from the Canterbury Museum and includes Carrie Foster in 1890s when she found two elderly Moriori people starving- on the main island of Wharekauri I think.

There is a short descriptive article in the (USA) Whalemen's Shipping List and Merchants' Transcript (Aug 30, 1859 p.2 col2) which details the initial strike by lightning on April 12th 1858 that fused the guide chains of the topsail sheet and maintopgallant tie and then one year later the parting of chain cables and final running ashore among rocks on the north side of Pitt's Island.
I never received the article, but if someone wants to access it and put it up here for us all to read, that would be of great interest to quite a few people I imagine.

I have newspaper reports - also copy of original crew list (courtesy of New Bedford Public Library). Also have corresponded with descendant of Captain Richmond.
