Greetings

Most interesting thank you but a different John Sullivan and Elizabeth Vincent.

Elizabeth came out to New Zealand with her mother and family on the sv Chile to Dunedin in 1861.

http://www.yesteryears.co.nz/shipping/passlists/chile.html

The marriage record for John Sullivan and Elizabeth Vincent in 1869 has his age at 30 and her 18 years. This information doesn't quite fit with the passenger list for the SV Mersey in 1862. I believe they are different people.

http://www.yesteryears.co.nz/shipping/passlists/mersey.html

Many thanks for your interest and time.

AlexG

Re: John Rogers-Spouse - Lillas Jane Stafford

Have you looked for births at BDM Online - Historical Records (https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/Home/) for descendants of these people? If any were born more than 100 years ago, you may find them there. Note that parents aren't always listed for pre-1875 births, but that is being worked on at the moment, so you may have different results from your search later on.

You can purchase copies of registrations on that site. Be sure to get the printout, not the legal certificate, for family history purposes. (I explain why at http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/NEW-ZEALAND/20...)

Do check at https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/dataCollected/ to see exactly what information should have been gathered at the time of the event. Some of the earlier registrations (such as marriages before 1880) don't contain sufficient data to be considered useful to us family historians, so it's a waste of money to buy a copy.

If you don't want to order online, or are dealing with more recent events that aren't on the historical site and don't have an iGovt registration, you can order via ordinary mail - go to Births, Deaths & Marriages (BDM, http://www.bdm.govt.nz/), click on the button "Births", then click on the link "Obtain application forms and find the associated fees", then "Birth, Death, Marriage, Civil Union or Name Change certificate or printout", then "Request for Birth Certificate or Printout BDM 93B". Print this form, complete it with what you know, and send it off with your payment. You can also call them and place an order over the phone.

If you are a member of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists (NZSG, http://www.genealogy.org.nz/) enquire at their Certificates Collection before making purchases at BDM. If they're holding what you're looking for, it is much cheaper.

Another route for finding children is death records. Start with the BDM site above. A death registration should list the age and sex of any "living issue", or children who survived the parent. Take that information to the BDM site if over 100 years ago, otherwise go to the older microfiche indexes that you'll find in libraries and genealogy groups around the country.

Also look at Archway (http://archway.archives.govt.nz/), the online index for Archives New Zealand (http://www.archives.govt.nz/) for probate files. You can walk into the office where a file is held and view it for free (assuming there are no viewing restrictions, which will be noted at Archway), or you can ask a friend to visit and take photos for you, or you can pay a fee to Archives and have them send you a copy of the file.

Other methods I use for finding descendants is listing the family tree on one (or more) of the sites that let you do that for free. My current favourite is My Heritage (http://www.myheritage.com/) - their data matching with other people's trees is very good - and I also use Genes Reunited (http://www.genesreunited.com/) and Ancestry.com. It's free to load your tree at all of these sites, and by doing so you may make contact with someone else also researching that family who know things you don't. I've made good contacts through all three sites.

Hope this helps. :-)

Wendy

What would you like to find out about your lady?

You can see her marriage in the indexes at BDM Online - Historical Records (https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/Home/):

Registration: 1874/12601
Jensina JENSAN & James Robert UPTON

I found it by searching on the groom's surname, then sorting the results by the bride's surname. Unless I want to specifically narrow down a search, I typically use a start date of 1/1/1840 (which is before registrations started in NZ) to catch all entries that match my search terms.

In the death indexes on the same site, I think this is likely to be her, given how little I know at this stage:

Registration: 1940/25606
Jensine UPTON, aged 90 years

That equates to a birth around 1850.

You can purchase copies of registrations on that site. Be sure to get the printout, not the legal certificate, for family history purposes. If they're holding what you're looking for, it is much cheaper.

I have the NZSG CD "New Zealand Burial Locator v2" here, and that is telling me that Jensine is mentioned in a monumental inscription on a headstone in Bromley Cemetery in Christchurch.

Taking that hint, go to the Christchurch City Council's online cemetery database (http://librarydata.christchurch.org.nz/Cemeteries/) and you'll find a listing for her there, indicating she is indeed buried there.

You may like to track Jensine through the electoral rolls. Some are available on CD at NZSG, and all rolls are at Ancestry if you have access to that (check your local library if you don't have your own subscription at the moment). From what I can see here, Jensine and her husband lived at a place called St Andrews, which in 1911 was in the Temuka electorate.

Both Temuka and Waimate, which you mentioned in your post, are in Canterbury so I will be moving your post and the replies to it from the Southland board to the Canterbury one when I've finished this reply; I administer both boards.

Hope this helps you along your way. Come back and ask more questions if you need more help. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy

I know a little but again not that much about their daughters, Alice and my grandmother, Phyllis.

I have learnt a bit now about William Leslie Ronald BROWN and his wife, Mabel Susan BROWN (nee BEATTIE)'s parents and their siblings.

I am willing to share with you what I know :).

If you're able to help me, I'd be greatly appreciated.

You wouldn't happen to have a photograph of Francis who was killed in action during WWII? Or of any other people you'd be willing to share with me?

Regards,
Michaela :-)

I have Ryans, in my family. (Granmothers maiden name).
They are catholic, living in inland South Canterbury. Cave, Sutherlands and Taiko.
Grandmas' grandparents were buried in the Rangiora Catholic cemetry, now part of the Catholic school playground. There is a plaque in the playground.
Her father married a Wall. They started out in St Bathans hotel, with family in the Catholic cemetry.
They worked their way north, until buying sheep farms, in South Canterbury. Still family there.
Edward Ryan, a retired Judge, in Christchurch, has family histroy.
There is a small hamlet, near Leeston named Doyleston. Ellesmere Historical Society would have information.

Hi No I haven't looked there at that site..thanks. Sadly work gets in my way of doing many things and also eats into my time on here or anywhere :) So how do I find 'Beverly Evan's' or will I find that when I open your link :)
And that's pretty out there as I have Evan's in my 'birth family' I was born an Evans, but adopted at bith. Funny old world..I often don't feel I actually have a 'family' as such, I was 29 before I was told I was adopted. And yes have found some of them but the Evans side I haven't really looked at after finding my birth father died before I knew I was adopted and his wife at death, well a hole different story, but he is on my birth cert as father, but left that alone. My Uncle who is a Reed comes from the Doyles and Wilson side. And as I was/am closer to him and his Mother who's mother was a daughter of a Doyle and I remember my GGGrans 100th when I was 4. Was why I want to do this family tree for him before he is no longer with us. I thank you very, very much for your help to date..I am hopless at searching and an very greatful for you help as I have seen to date. And I hope I can repay you one day. Kindest thoughts Anne

Happy to help if I can and hope if you find anything that might fit with my searching you can do the same. Are you in New Zealand or somewhere else? Just interested...I'm not getting to far with my searching sadly and wanted to get it finished for my Uncles 94 birthday soon. Kind thoughts Anne

I have no info that I can contribute about Catherine Doyle and Edward Wilson and their family.

I just know that Bonnie stated **incorrectly** that Ruth and Martha Rose Kathleen were Catherine and Edward's children. They belong to a totally different Wilson family. And there does not appear to be any linkage.

The Wilson family those children belong to, starts with the migration of Thomas+Martha Wilson from Yorkshire, arriving in Lyttelton on the Lady Jocelyn on 11 Nov 1872.

Thomas+Martha Wilson's children were:
Margaret Hannah (b.1868),
Edward (b.1870, m1.Helena Elizabeth HEYDER, m2.Madeline Jane IVORY, d.1956),
James Tallentire (1872-1872),
James Tallantire (b.1873),
Thomas (b.1875)
Sarah (b.1877),
John Joseph (b.1878, father of previously mentioned Ruth and Martha Rose Kathleen),
William Henry (b.1880),
Martha (b.1882),
Elizabeth (1885-1885),
Agnes (1889-1889)
Richard Atkinson (1891).

Hope this clarifies some things for you. Probably doesn't add to your "family", however if you are able to help me with any of the above, it would be appreciated, thanks.
Susan
Good Evening Bonnie (my time is night here) Sorry often when I type my fingers don't match up with my head. Yes John Nicholas Doyle was born in Ireland, Parents Pat(t) Doyle & Bridgt (? Bridget) Dwyer unsure if she was married to Pat or not haven't found a marriage for them. Sponsor was Elizabeth Flood (I assume that is what we/I call a God Mother?) John was born September 1822 Baptism ST Catherine's Ireland (Not sure if that is in Dublin or another area?) He went to India as a young man, there he married Catherin O'Connor 26th October 1857 in Hurrachee, Bombay India Catherine was a widow. In 1863 he was invalided out and returned via the Morayshire to England and I assume on to Ireland. I can't find any passanger lists for the "Morayshire". 1st Child was Anne/ie christened in Hurrachie 6th Sept 1859 Born 30th August 1859 (I am her GGGrand-daughter) and was at her 100th B/D and have pictures of us all there including ones of her. She was 100 when she died She married Alexander Ross. I have details of that and their family. I have Mary Doyle being 2nd child born 1861 D 1883, (was for me unconfirmed but just from information I have found..that was all I knew about her. The 3rd Child was Agnes Doyle born 14th Feb 1863 (of her I have no other information). Then I had found a number of Catherines born in Ireland while they where there..so I had only guessed at finding or having information on the correct one, the I found her marriage in 1902 to Edward Wilson and it said 5th daughter so I was missing one! I found a Catherine coming to NZ on the "Doric" in 1877 but now think that wasn't the correct one..as someone found another for me to look at that wasn't until a later date and had a Rose Mary (or Mary Rose) coming with her. So you have filled in some gapps for me and the tree I am trying to do for my 94 year old Uncle I still have two Uncles from that family still alive. But memories from them are vauge. They only remember their Grandmother Anne/Annie and they only knew of one sister that they could remember. So you have given me some more help and I am very greatful. So do you fit in there as part of my extended family? If so I would be more than happy to sent photo's and things to you. I also have a 4mth old buried in the same cemetery but not with the balance of the family 3 are together (John, Mary and Catherine). A headstone was put there by Catherine jnr and husband. And I wondered seeing the baby was named Mary Doyle and died the same year as my GGreat Aunt. That it might have been hers? The shipping page for John Doyle was on the "Lady Ruthven" and just says John, wife and family. so I didn't have any idea which children other than Annie that came. I visit her grave any time I am in Christchurch as well as her daughter (my Gran) my Gran came to live with us when I was about 7yrs old and we shared a bedroom until I left home. And we shared much love and was very special to me. Again I thank you for the reply and hope to hear from you again.. Kindest thoughts Anne

Doyle's canterbury, Ryan's and Wilson's all Canterbury

I am missing some family memebers. Needles to say I would love to find some alive ones to contact. I have my GGAunt Catherine coming to NZ either 1888 or 1891 marrying Edward Wilson from Barry's Bay any family out there? The another Doyle that is the 1891 arrival is correct another GGAunt that came out with Catherine then I believe married a John Joseph Ryan in 1909 Not totally sure that is a correct membeer of the same Doyle family but worth looking at. The father was a John Nicholas Doyle married to a Catherine O'Connor in India John was with the East India Co there and returned as an invalid to Ireland in 1863 then came to Dunedin with wife and family this is where it gets messy. My GGgrand was one that came with them Anne/ie and also GGAunt Mary they all died within a short time of arriving 1873 to 1876 Though GGran lived on until 100,her I know about it's the other's I am trying to fill in there was 5 daughters Three I believe born in India GGran Anne/ie ..Agnes I know nothing about and Mary. The balance would have been born prior to their arrival in NZ And that is Catherine jnr and Mary Rose or Rose Mary I think...though Rose Mary and Agnes may not had lived though I can't find any details of there deaths..If I have the Rose mary/Mary Rose correct she married a Ryan Jon Joseph Ryan in 1909 and I know for sure that Catherine jnr Married Edward Wilson from Barry's Bay in ChCh 3rd Nov 1902 any help would be wonderful thanks.

Tony said "More information can be found if you order their certificates (cost about $20)."

Please do NOT order the legal certificate for family history purposes; you WILL be disappointed. Get the printout - I explain why at http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/NEW-ZEALAND/20...

The web site you need for this is BDM Online - Historical Records (https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/Home/)

If you don't want to order online, or are dealing with more recent events that aren't on the historical site and don't have an iGovt registration, you can order via ordinary mail - go to Births, Deaths & Marriages (BDM, http://www.bdm.govt.nz/), click on the button "Births", then click on the link "Obtain application forms and fin the associated fees", then "Birth, Death, Marriage, Civil Union or Name Change certificate or printout", then "Request for Birth Certificate or Printout BDM 93B". Print this form, complete it with what you know, and send it off with your payment. I've also been told you can call them and order over the phone.

If you are a member of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists (NZSG, http://www.genealogy.org.nz/) enquire at their Certificates Collection before making purchases at BDM. If they're holding what you're looking for, it is much cheaper.

"3 Feb 1891 Star Newspaper has the heading Serious Accident at Cust. It's a great resource.

You may also find Archway (http://archway.archives.govt.nz/), the online index for Archives New Zealand (http://www.archives.govt.nz/) helpful.

It's free to walk into the office holding a file of interest to you and view it, assuming there are no restrictions (which are spelled out in the Archway listing if there are any). If you can't go yourself, a friend can visit on your behalf (barring any restrictions as above, or where permission is given to a specific person, of course) and take photos. Ask here if you need help, someone might be able to visit for you.

Hope this helps. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy
