hi,

i am the great grand son of johny noels an islander who was apparently born around 1860 on lifu island near new caledonia. this information is based on his queensland marriage certificate (1885) and his queensland death certificate (1896). he lived in rockhampton north queensland for several years before his death.

i am interested in any information or possible sources of information about where he was born, who his parents were, when and why he left the island for australia (perhaps black birded?).

thank you

stephan schnierer
I am searching for any information on my mother, Alphonsine Louise Cureau, and her family in New Caledonia. Mum was born in Noumea 28/10/1904, her father was Edgard Louie Cureau and her mother was Celenie Jaroisay.
Mum migrated to Sydney Australia in 1920, and on 9/2/1927 she married my Dad, Arthur Charles Leslie Masters.
I can't find any records of her New Caledonian family or her australian immigration/vessel records.

Hi,
I just thought I would let you know I was able to obtain the birth certificate of my ancestor Louis Girard whilst I was in Noumea in Feb.
I also have a birth certificate for what another Girard Victor, although he was born too late to be one of my ancestors family but maybe a cousin! The birth cert gave me the birthplace of Louis' Father Emile Girard as St Croix, Vaud, Switzerland so now I am wondering how I can find shipping records, if any exist, that would show when he emigrated from Switzerland to New Caledonia. Geographically I am thinking he may have gone into France and sailed from there around 1860.
You mentioned you had some friends doing genealogy in Noumea. Would you mind sending me one of their emails or asking them if they know if shipping records exist for this period.
Thanks in advance
Theresa

Hi,

I'm look for any information at all regarding a Mr James Morrison from New Caledonia.

From what I know he died in Australia (The Torres Strait) During War (Which one I am not sure) in 1944.

He had children in Australia with a lady known as Maud (Muradh Lai), their names are: John Morrison, Nora Morrison, Edward (Ned) Morrison, Maria Morrison, Ellen Morrison and Elizabeth Morrison.

What I would really like to know is, who his parents are and where they came from.
Interestingly there is an island just off Noumea called Amedee island and my ancestor was called Louis Amedee Girard so I am keen to find out if there is a link or if it is a coincidence.
Cheers Theresa

Hi Nicole,

You're really welcome - I'm glad the information gleaned from the site can be of assistance.

Because my great-grandmother had several siblings, I spent quite a bit of time poring over the details it contained and I started to get a sense of their lives in NC. The godparents gave me an idea of whom they mixed with and were possibly related to. The occupations listed for parents and godparents gave an insight into their lifestyle.

The multiple marriages are intriguing. Where with my British/Australian research death led to remarriage, that doesn't seem to have been the case with the French!

Their naming traditions are something I would like to know more about. Children seemed to have 3 Christian names one of which would be chosen as their given name and others as the baptismal name and then sometimes a different combination for the birth registration. I started to see why members of the family recalled them by different names.

Whilst doing this section of my research I realised that we Aussies who have NC roots are a distinct breed with something in common. I know the Huegenot descendents have their own societies around the world, I wonder if there is one for our lot?

I would like to take the opportunity here to thank Christian Martinet who compiled the dictionary. It is an invaluable tool.

cheers,
Mitch

Hi Nicole,

Just last week I discovered a site www.en.calameo.com. It is a biographical dictionary of baptisms in New Caledonia for the late 1800's/early 1900's which I have found extremely helpful to my research. It is written in French and has marginal notes which sometimes tells who the person married. I used an online translator for the phrases I did not understand. Your great-grandmother's surname was spelt GAZINGEL. With my limited French it looks like she married Alexandre Alain Heister, born 16/2/1890 in Noumea to Georges Henry HEISTER, a German shipwright, and Gabrielle Olive PAUGAME, 28. Alexandre married your grandmother on 8.5.1915. On 10/4/1922 he married Jeanne Lucie DE BALMANN and then it looks like he married Marie Antoinette DE BALMANN on 4.11.1950, again both in Noumea. Hope my interpretation is correct and this is of some help.

Regards, Mitch.

Hi,

I'm trying to find a little more information about my great grandmother. Her name was Emma Theodorine G (I don't know how to spell her maiden name, but it sounded like Gaznaelle). I know she was born in 1901 in New Caledonia, and married around the age of 14 in 1915, and her surname changed to Heister. She then immigrated over here to Sydney, Australia in April, 1917. If any one knows any information that would be great!!

Hi everyone

I am looking for information on the above two people - my grandfather and great uncle - George Gilbert Milligan and Tom Milligan. In 1942 they left Australia, only for a few months and went to New Caledonia to work. I understand that this was to help in the construction of airfields for WW2. I think they were working for the Americans. As far as I know they were civilians.I don't know if it was some scheme that was running or how they were chosen. I understand they went over by boat - don't know its name. I am not sure how long they were there for. Would appreciate any info or guidance.

Thanks

Colleen Way
Dear Shirley: This is a long shot … but if your email address is still current, I got it from a discussion between you and Sandi concerning the Le Bris (Lebris in New Caledonia) family. Please see the attached graphic.

I have shown a pedigree view from Ancestry.com from the perspective Maureen Adam (nee Kirk). I have also copied in my cousin Margaret Hart who has also been researching the Le Bris family background (Margaret’s mother was Adeline EM Le Brese’s sister). Note how some bright spark helped rewrite history by changing their name to Le Brese as they could not speak English when they came from New Caledonia.

My husband Stewart and I leave for Europe on Sunday 2 September (from Melbourne) where we are meeting up with Michel Durose (also CC’d) who lives in Brest (from whence Yves Le Bris came). Michel is a member of the Arbre Généalogique Brest he has been helping us track down the family and hopefully may be able to introduce Maureen to some living relatives during our stay in Brest on 7-10 September. Michel told us Lynette Twist (another of my relations) had been in touch with him. He is writing an article on the Le Bris family and would love to hear from her (and you no doubt).

We hope to hear from you,
Regards,
Maureen & Stewart
I'm intrigued that Garnay does not appear in the archives d'outre-mer. There is a Garnier, Henri Paul Aristide
condamné au bagne en 1872 (Nouvelle-Calédonie)
who was apparently part of the Commune de Paris in 1871. Could this be your Garnay?

Are you sure that Garnay and Chappin in Sydney in 1885 and 1886 are the same person?

What else do you know about Henri Garnay?

I believe that Henri Garnay was returned to New Caledonia - 16 years imprisonment. I had always been told that he died in the 1870's!!! I was able to gather some information from Trove but shall do more research.
Jennette

Perhaps it is too late to be helpful, but zebedee and I have found some info about our French convict ancestor at http://anom.archivesnationales.culture.gouv.fr/bagnards_doss...
I can't find a Chappin or Garnay convict between 1860 and 1890, but the spelling could be different. Worth trying!

State records has a list of former French convicts living in Sydney in 1885. There is a "Henry Chappin, libérée, tailor at Loise Pitt street". I don't have the page which would contain Garnay.

There are some mentions of Henri Garnay in newspapers on Trove.

I hope this helps you.

Lyn
Hello,
Did you ever receive a reply to this? I am just seeing your message a year later through doing some research. I am currently researching "my bagnards" as well. There is an active genealogy group in Noumea that may be able to offer advice on the kinds of records available in the archives there. I can send you the information for their listserv, and you could perhaps inquire that way (in French). If you are still searching, feel free to contact me through ancestry or my website below.

I'd appreciate hearing how you obtained the dossiers from the archives in France. I was told by family in Noumea that they would respond to a written request, but they told me that I would need to hire (a very expensive) local researcher to copy them for me.

Cheers,
Sharon
www.twocaledonias.net

Dear Theresa,

Did you ever find an answer to this? I was doing a good search today and your post turned up in it. Birth certificates in New Caledonia are obtained through the mairie (town hall) in Noumea. They were very helpful when I was there, but I don't know about via mail. They needed proof I was related to the people for whom I was requesting documents. If you still need help, I know a number of people in Noumea doing genealogy and they'd probably be happy to help. Speaking or writing French would be helpful. :-)

Cheers,
Sharon
www.twocaledonias.net

I'm trying to find out more about Eugene PORCHERON and his wife, Marie Louise Olympe PORCHERON (de LA HOGUE), who are buried in Noumea, New Caledonia.

I believe they are my wife's GG grandparents however I need to find out more about them before I can connect them. They seem to have travelled between Australia and New Calendonia for Eugene was in Australia in the 1850s. Some of his family emigrated to Australia later.

Does anyone know how to find more about births, deaths and marriages in New Caledonia?

Regards,
Daniel

MOURIN and REBOUR families

Hello, I am the great granddaughter of Charles Emile Louis MOURIN and Antoinette Eugene MOURIN ( nee REBOUR). Both lived in New Caledonia for a period and were married in the Cathedrale of Noumea on 28/8/1909. My greatgrandfather's father was Louis Auguste MOURIN, and my greatgrandmother's father was Antoine Eugene Rebour. My mother thinks that LOUIS Mourin was at some point an administrator for parts of French Polynesia, and that ANTOINE EUGENE Rebour, was a town planner/surveyor in Noumea. It is all a bit sketchy. If anyone has any information about my family to share it would be much appreciated.
Thank you, Antoinette Marie Peters, Adelaide, Australia

No, I was unable to access information for New Caledonia, but certainly had sucess with police records in Sydney. Gather Henri Garnay escaped from New Caledonia and managed to reach Sydney and believe he received 16 years here in Sydney and deported back to New Calodonia in 1870's.

Hi there, does anyone know how to begin researching French convict records? My Great Grandfather Henri Baret, Paris, France was a prisoner in New Caledonia in the 1870's and I want to access any convict records about him. I have the French Court records of his conviction, but I'd like to see if there are any records of him relating to the period of incarceration. I would be so grateful if you could give me any help.

Hello,
I have twice requested the birth certificate for Louis Amedee Girard born 3/10/1861 in New Caledonia however have had no reply to my emails from the New Caledonian archives (archives@gouv.nc).
Louis came to Australia as a young boy with his family, Father Emile and Mother Mary. I am unsure if he had any siblings. I have located naturalisation records from 1924 which indicate he had Swiss citizenship.
Has anybody else had any luck with contacting the archives or know anything of this family.
Cheers Theresa

Hi,

I'm looking for information about Maurice de Balman born 1848 St Joseph Reunion who came to New Caledonia around 1871/2 and married Marie Eugenie Thierry who was 16 years old. Her parent's names were Francois and Anastasie. Francois Thierry's occupation is described as "overseer".

The couple left New Caledonia around 1880 with two daughters, Julia and Blanche and, after returning to Reunion, emigrated to Australia.

There was a notice in the Melbourne Argus in 1948 asking about the whereabouts of Maurice Balmain from New Caledonia.

Thanks in advance,
Kate Blackwell
Blue Mountains
Australia

I am seeking the birthdate and parents of a Marcel LeBon, possibly baptised Joseph Ives Marcel LeBon, abt 1895 in New Caledonia. He married first Rachel Ada Mann in 1915 at Ryde in Sydney, NSW, Australia, then Florence Matilda Cruise in 1943 at Hunters Hill. He died in 1965 at Henley, near Ryde, aged 70. His death notice does not give parents' names.
His father was believed to have been a magistrate or judge in New Caledonia.
