Searching for Descendants of WILLIAM HICKS who was born in 1850 in Fiji and was the son of Englishman JOHN HICKS (Oil Trader) and a Fijian Maiden named TINAI.

William spent some years in KOSRAE when he was Second Mate on board the "Leonora" which was shipwrecked there in 1874.

His son John Hicks was also born in the Gilbert Islands in 1876. We are wondering if William had more children who were born there and would like to connect with their descendants.

Hi,

My paternal great grandfather was John Exton also known as Jack Exton born approx 1850 in England. He married? my great grandmother Busina Daroa of Porebada village in Port Moresby Papua New Guinea. They had 3 children Rose, William and Henry. I've found records of a man of the same name sailing out of Noumea on the Argos 1877 and the South Sea Islands on the Meteor 1877. He is mentioned as a Sandalwood trader and died in 1910 @ his property Malara in Papua New Guinea.
If anybody has any information that could help it would be gratefully received.

Many thanks
Rene

Hello:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/His_Majesty_O'Keefe
Historical basis

The basis for this story is believed to be an actual event[citation needed]. A sailor named David O'Keefe was shipwrecked on Yap in the Caroline Islands, where he found the natives highly prized Rai stones quarried at great effort and danger on the island of Palau. He organized the natives to produce these largest of all coins more easily and then traded them for copra and other items. The carved stones he produced were not valued as highly as those obtained by traditional methods due to the lack of personal sacrifice in their production.

"His Majesty O'Keefe" is a 1954 adventure film starring Burt Lancaster.
.....

http://faroutliers.wordpress.com/2003/12/21/his-majesty-okee...
21 December 2003...9:16 pm
His Majesty O’Keefe

David Dean O’Keefe was born in Ireland in 1828 (or 1824). He immigrated to the US in 1848 and made his home in Savannah. He captained ships in the off-shore trade. In 1871, he set sail on the “Belvedere” for Manila. In 1872, he first arrived on Yap aboard the junk “Wrecker”. He worked in Yap until at least 1875 for Webster & Cook of Singapore. After this he began trading on his own. O’Keefe established a string of trade stations on Yap, Palau and Mapia. He acquired several small vessels during this period which he used to visit his stations and bring his copra to Hong Kong. He came to dominate the copra trade on Yap through his strategy of providing Yapese with transportation to Palau for the quarrying of the stone cylinders that were used as money. O’Keefe was married to a woman on Mapia, but his second wife (Dalibu) lived with him on Yap and ran his home and headquarters at Terang Island in Yap Harbor. O’Keefe, always the center of controversy, was charged by other traders with a vast array of crimes, but most of the charges were dismissed by British authorities. O’Keefe had several children, who lived with him on Yap. He died while at sea in a typhoon in 1901, leaving a fortune of at least half a million dollars.
.....

Gratitudes to "Skipjack Stevens"!

Regards,
--Manaia

faafetai tele for your help, the info might be a bit off because, Iosia is our gggrandfather, he was married first before the marriage to namaneane our gggrandmother. the birthdates are not right because that would put him in the same birthdates as his children and grand children, namaneane's too.... her birthplace is correct, the island of Lifou/Mare in New Caledonia, she (we believe) might have European blood too besides being kanake, it shows in all of us.... appreciate the work though...
Sadly, my mother passed away when I was so young that I did not know much about my grandpa. All I know his name was Fouafanua. He was married to my grandma from the island of Tonga. I'd like to know about him and his family.

Any information is much appreciated.
