In searching for the origin of the "Leon Guerrero" surname, I have been unable to find any mention of it in any Spanish related country. The surname "Leon" and the surname "Guerrero" are both listed individually, but not the combination of the two.

Does anyone have any insight into this matter?
Was it a name that was created there on Guam under the influence of the Spanish missionaries?

Hi there. I am also looking for the origin of the Leon Guerrero name. I've heard many different stories but am trying to document my research with primary sources.

I depart on Sunday (April 6, 2008) for Seville, Spain to continue my research. As far as I can determine, the de Leon Guerrero name was present as early as 1717 in Guam. Diego de Leon Guerrero was a Spanish solider who made Guam his home. I can trace his family in official spanish documents to 1758. I am trying to determine when he came to Guam and from where. Like you, I have not been successful in finding any Leon Guerrero's that were not in some way related to Guam. In the early spanish records there are de Leon's, Guerrero's and de Leon Guerrero's. This indicates that they were three different families. So please contact me if you get this email so we may share our research. I will try to send you an email as well but I'm not sure if your address is updated.

Thank you,

Jillette Leon Guerrero

I am also interested in the origins of the De leon Guerrero last name. My g-grandmother was Consolacion De Leon Guerrero Toves. I don't know who her parents were or much else about her. She died before my grandparents married. I don't know if you know or not but the late Governor of Guam Manuel F.L Guerrero, the L stands for the Leon part of Leon Guerrero. The F is Flores, relatives of my grandma.
I have seen an article on the Punzalan web site on the origin of the De and Leon Guerrero lat name.
Have a wonderful time in Spain and Happy hunting.

Hi!

I will look for records of your grandmother and get back to you. Can you send me your email address so I can contact you directly?

I was in Madrid this past summer and wanted to go to Segovia - the military archives to search for information on the de Leon Guerrero's listed there. There were two soldiers with the de Leon Guerrero last name. As you may know when searching for ancestors we need to search those with the suname de Leon Guerrero, Leon Guerrero, de Leon and Guerrero.

My email address is jillette@mac.com

"Guerrero" is a Spanish surname. "Leon" is originally "DeLeon" which means "of Leon". Leon being a place in Spain. So in it's entirety it would mean the Guerrero family from Leon. The name Deleon Guerrero probably orginated from the Philipines. At some point the family dropped the "De" from Leon. Most of the Leon Guerrero's on guam have Chamoru blood lines.

when i was in the philippines i checked the phone directory and to my surprise did not find any "leon Guerrero" or "de leon guerrero" either, however i found many de leons and guerreros but nothing in comparison to cruz, perez, santos, etc. so is suspect that the leon guerrero from guam are guerreros from leon, thus guerrero from leon (de leon)
