Hey,
Sorry for the extra late reply! (only 3 years later...!) We have letters and cards from your grandmother to mine. They were cousins, my grandmother was Eduard's sisters(Emilie Temere Loschmann)eldest daughter. I would love to get in contact with you and your family and catch up one day! Message me if you still check out this site.
Cheers,
Chantal

I will list some: Australian Vance Tree...Finding the Clempsons Tree...Knoll-Jackell Tree...Southall/Birss Tree...Leach tree... Thorn tree...Duvall tree, etc...
Getting research right!

Graham
Unfortunately, it is evident that the two largest genealogical web sites which accept subnissions from private sources (Ancestry and LDS) are seriously infected with false or suspect information. It appears to stem from the fact that too many people do not differentiate between search and research. These message boards provide an ideal base for searching and the information gathered a good start into research. However, the boards themselves are not instruments for research. The distinction is quite clear but research requires much more effort!

Descendants of Margaret Malcolm b Birse, Scotland in 1844

Am looking for descendants of Margaret Malcolm born 1844 Birse, Aberdeenshire, Scotland and Robert Malcolm Gibbs born in 1833 in same place. Both persons emigrated to Dunedin, New Zealand around 1864 where they had a child by the name of Robenia Gibbs born 1865 (who later married a John Linsing in 1894). They then moved to Victoria, Australia in about 1866 where they had a further 7 children named David b 1867, Susan Margaret b 1871, Archibald b 1872, Margaret b 1873, Agnes b 1875 (who later married an Archibald Stokes in 1903 in Victoria), Ann White Gibbs b 1876 (who later married a Thomas John Shaw) and John 1879. All the children were born in the Maffra/Sale area of Victoria. I believe some of the living relatives have the surnames Stokes, Linsing and Gibbs.

My great grandfather, Robert John Malcolm born 1853 in Old Macher, Aberdeenshire was the younger brother of Margaret Malcolm.

There appears to be an old family tree on ancestry.com that contains the same names and more descendants, however it is no longer active and I cannot contact any person associated with it.

If anyone out there knows of any living relatives or are loosely connected to any of these families any contact would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Michael

Cliff - my Arthur Hayman Philpott was born in Sydney 1895 so there's a possibility that he's a descendant of some ilk. His parents were Martin Luther & Margaret Philpott,no dates, buried in Rookwood cemetery, Sydney, NSW; grandparents were John May & Maria Philpott, no dates. I hope this is of help to you - if you do find a link between the families, I would be very interested. Like you I'm working via the web and I understand that there are no NSW census records which complicates searches like this one. Arthur Hayman met Lily Collins in Littleport, Cambridgeshire somehow, while he was in UK with the AIF and they went back in 1919. All the girls were born in NSW. I'm still hopeful of hearing from some of their descendants. I'm a Kentish maid currently in exile in USA!

Have intended to try Genes when I get around to it.
re the Kentish business see http://www.bbc.co.uk/kent/places/features/manofkent_kentishm... which confirms that I'm definitely a Kentish Maid (or was rather a long time ago!!)
Thanks for getting in touch anyway and if you come across Philpotts, please remember me!
Again no bells ringing...

As your Arthur was in the War I KNOW as I have downloaded from, that WW1 Army Recoprds ( at least the army maybe other services?) are online via the Australian National Archives. I dsownloaded two files , page by page of Army Records, including attestation papers, ect, which gave personal info.
Thats the best suggestion for now until something is found.
for a quick perusal of potential ancestry search the web for clanbarker, John Barkers UK website.
For some Australian Phillotts search for clancameron, again possible links with that bunch.
I have exausted the web it seem but am also awaiting replies to half a dox=zen messages sent to Phillott ( Australia ) contacts on the UK website Genes Reunited. This website is free to search if you chooose to have a look.
I also note there are Australian Voter Lists on Ancestry..dates I have =registered are up to about 1936..they should have something,,maybe.

Does one know the differencve between a Kentish Maid and a Maid of Kent??

- Clif

He & Lily married in Littleport, Cambridgeshire in 1919 after his return from WW1 and returned to Sydney area. There were four daughters: Violet, Iris, Margaret & Joan.
Matthew & Charles McDonald/MacDonald, Mary McPherson

I am trying to track down any information on my GGGgrandfather Matthew McDonald/MacDonald. Information is very sketchy there are all sorts of bits i've found connecting him to different families etc, so here is what I have:

Matthew MacDonald/McDonald
Father: Charles
Mother: unknown
Born: 1810 Ord or Gillen house, Sleat, Isle of Skye
Spouse: Mary McPherson
Arrived Australia: 1837 onboard William Nicholl

I have found a marriage between a William MacDonald and a Mary McPherson in Croy in 1833 and this is the only I can find so far. I heard a family rumour that Mary was catholic and Matthew was presbyterian and that it was not agreed to by their parents, and thus they eventually left Skye for Australia.
Now his father was born in 1779 and I think he probably would have married, yet the only marriage I can find listed is to Anne McLeod in 1828, which makes Charles 49. I can find a marriage for a Charles McDonald to a Jean Bruce in 1810 and here the trail ends. Not a mention of children etc.
I have tried Scotlands people site, Skye-roots site (still waiting to hear back) and several other sites and can find nothing definate and certainly no birth of a Matthew MacDonald in or around 1810.
SO if anyone can help with site suggestions, reading material or anything even a vague rumour i'll take it and investigate until it is validated or completely dead.
Thanks in advance
Tanya (tanyahill1973@yahoo.com.au)

Whaling Capt. Charles Veeder in Tahiti

I am trying to solve a mystery. We (the Nantucket Historical Association) has a log kept by Susan Veeder on the Nauticon; we all love her story, and when someone asked when her husband, whaling Capt. Charles Veeder, died, we investigated. We have found that he left his ship (the William Gifford) in Tahiti (probably Papeete, since the US consul came on board), in May 1872. The consul wrote that Veeder "will remain at one of these islands with the native woman whom he had on board the vessel as his mistress." Since the ship's log records Veeder as "doing her laundry," he must have been in love.

But what happened to Veeder? We know he died in 1878 in the "Society Islands."

Would anyone have information or leads on other places to search? He's not mentioned in the Whalemen's shipping list. Is there a historical society or cemetery inscription project down there? I keep thinking there's probably more information someplace, if I just knew who to ask.

Thanks!
Thank you so much for your information. It has confirmed that I was following the correct person. It also explains why his family came out in 1849; that is when he received his conditional pardon.

Is there any way of finding out what happened to him when he was released. My guess is that he went to NSW, as that is where his 2 daughters died, Jane (Shields) at Appletree Flat, Mudgee and Mary Ann (Shields) they married brothers.

Thanks.

I am hoping someone can help me with William Jenkins convict. His family, wife and 2 daughters arrived in Tasmania on the William Jardine in 1849 but I assume that William had arrived before then. My guess is that he may be the William Jenkins who was convicted in Devon in 1838 who came to V D Land on the ship GILMORE arriving in OCtober 1838. His wife was Mary, daughters Jane and Mary Ann. I would appreciate any information on him.

Hi The name you mention dose not appear in any of my records but that isn't to say they are not related as I have had a problem trying to track down the family here in New Zealand I know there were three brothers one died in the Boar War another married a Nena not sure if that is spelt right and then there is William and Emilie Wigmore they had 9 children. I do have a bit of the history of the NZ side if you can contact me at rrogers@ihug.co.nz we may be able to help each other look forward to your reply.
Hi, we started looking for Wigmores when we decided to holiday in Rarotonga. My mother is related to the Wigmores in NZ and said there possibly a connection but we are unsure of this. We are trying to find any relatives of Henry & Kate (nee Harsant) Wigmore of Hahei in NZ. Have you any information re this or if you have any tie to NZ we may be able to help. Thanks again

Hi, I have just returned from Rarotonga and have viewed information on Wigmore & Loschmann in the Rarotonga records.
William John Wigmore had 2 children to Emilie Loschmann in Tahiti before his return to Rarotonga, He leased land in Rarotonga where his family can still be found if you search the Mormon Microfiche for the period of 1916 you will find this infromation including a document from William & Emilie. I hope this helps your search.
I am trying to connection Wigmore's in NZ to Rarotonga.

Hello,

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately I vaen't been able to track Heinrich. The problem is that if he changed his name upon arrival to something like Sawyer (~ same pronounciation as Soya), then he will likely be untracable.

I don't know of several Soya lines that moved to New York State and Virginia, but I am pretty certain that none of my Vogel lin ever moved to the US.

Regards,

Ingolf Vogel

Hello Roy:

Fortunately, I know you've gleaned data on www.familysearch.org re Rudolph LOSCHMANN & Teona MARUHI and their (6) six children.

Found per: http://www.castlegarden.org/quick_search_detail.php?p_id=857...
Ru. LOSCHMANN
arr. 05 May 1881
.....

According to the records, Rudolph passes away 1897 and his last child is born - Emilie Tenere[sic] - 1897.

No matches for the surname WIGMORE in the Southwest Pacific region.

Hope this helps.
--Manaia
