@Jules Vicary, the threads on these posts are quite old so I'm not sure if you will see or respond to this, but I am curious about your Henry Augustus De Sales Valentine. There is a baptism record in 1846 for a HARRY VALENTINE, son of William Valentine and Tabua (Adi Kasanita Likutabua).

Could this Harry be your Henry? You mentioned your Henry was born possibly 1860 so if these are 2 different Henry/Harry, the age difference is 14 years so I'm guessing Harry could not be your Henry's father. What are the chances of it being the same person? I have a photocopy of the baptism record because it's on the same page as my great-grand-aunt Eliza Mary Hicks' record.

There is also another Valentine child with a baptism record right below Harry Valentine and as far as I can see, the child's name is SEGA (perhaps the Fijian version of the child's name), parents name William Valentine and Tabua (Adi Kasanita Likutabua).

All pre 1875 records can be found in the Methodist Church records held at the Fiji Archives. Hope to hear from you and by the way, there is a "Kailoma" Group on facebook that has a lot of information, pictures and group members who are connected to the Valentines or families that inter-married with the Valentines. The National Library of New Zealand in Wellington holds the microfilm of the Fiji Times. They are the people who provide Papers Past.
it is hoped that both the Samoa Times and The Fiji Times will eventually appear on the Papers Pastwebsite

He was still alive in 1890, now running a tobacco company.

Alexander Hinz is buried in Levuka Cemetery. Nothing is written on the grave stone apart from his name. Check Trove for possible mention of his death. He should be registered in the Fiji European Deaths microfilm, for which there is no index. He was alive in 1888, when he won a prize for growing pineapples in Levuka, so he presumably died some time after that.

The "4" was recorder in the wrong column in the Kaivalagi ni Viti. This refers to the number of children.

There are a few Hinz mentioned in the 1874-75 census. However spelt as Hinze.

On page 67. Census taken 1875

With regards to No. of women, there are two numbers written next to it 1 and 4. The information is hard to figure out cause the title of information is on page 63 while the data is on page 67.

Great Grandmother was born in Fiji

Im looking for information on my Great Grandmother.

Taken from the UK 1911 census and from other sources ... I know that her name was

Wilhelmine Annie Hin(t)z born 1873 (give or take 1 year). Born in the "Fiji Islands" and was of listed as of German nationality.

I believe her father was Alexander Hin(t)z and I know that she married a Louis Rudy (in Tasmania ?). Who must have died, because she married my Great Grandfather Walter Grover in the UK in 1901.

There was always a story in our family of a coffee plantation owner killed by natives in Fiji, if true was this Alaxander Hin(t)z who died or Louis Rudy. Presumably Alexander.

It's good to hear from you. You did send lots of information to me on gmail,including some photos. However,brilliant person that I am,I accidentally deleted all your info and many more instead of saving them.
Do you have those old emails to resend? A St John descendant from Samuel's marriage to Sarah Smith was found in the US.Unfortunately she had passed away only last year,but her daughter is very happy to find that she has uncles and cousins in Australia and New Zealand.
I've been looking at Whippys on Facebook. Nellie St John married George Foxton Whippy. On Facebook there is a site called David Whippy Public Figure. I found Nellie's picture and her children.
I hope that you are well. Are you still based in England? Bloody cold winter!! Cold in Vancouver right now.

I know where that Turaga comes from, My grand father is Matthew Turaga his father was Iliesa Turaga and his mum is Lilly St John. My grandfather pasted away last year but my grandmother still lives with my parents in Nakasi, Suva, Fiji.

He stayed and settled there having family.

I noticed the name Helena Esther Ryder in these posts and would like to query whether anyone knew of family researching the Ryders of Fiji.

I have an Esther Ryder of Fiji who married a Charles Johnson having a daughter Charlotte Johnson in c1920. Charlotte goes onto marry my 1st cousin 2x removed, Wilfred Stephens.

I'm hoping to get any information possible on Ryder's, Johnson's and Stephens of Fiji.

hi My father was born in Fiji and his Grandmother was Almeda Hathaway who married James sinclair Dods. Her father was Issac Hathaway who married a Whippy(no name available). Their children were: Almeda Potter Hathaway, Ephraim Hathaway, and Catherine Bonner Hathaway. Almeda Hathaway had four sons: Mark James, James Issac, John Sinclair,(my grand father) and William Lydiard. :) Somewhere along the line either Issac or his son married The King of Levuka's daughter, dont know if she was the missing Whippy or not.

Go to www.familysearch.org then go to the top of the search page and click on Catalog.
Write in "Fiji" in the country box.
You will get a list of all the microfilms produced about Fiji by the Mormon church.
Click on Civil registrations and Civil registrations indexes.
These list the BDMs and indexes.
Choose the microfilms you want and note their call numbers. Order these microfilms to a Family History Centre or affiliated library near you.

I have been doing what people have said and gone to the www.familysearch.org and typing in Fiji but nothing is being brought up other than Samoa and Guam.

Am I doing something wrong? I have a lot of certs to find in Fiji and wouldn't even know where to start...mainly death certs.

James Edward Windrum was the British Agent and Consul, Tonga.

Fiji was a British colony so I don't think we had a British Agent and Consul during that period.

According to http://rulers.org/rult.html James Edward Windrum (b. 1895 - d. 1992) served from 1949 - 1954.

Intrestingly the same website gives rulers from Fiji as well and apart from covering PM and Presidents it covers chiefs from various periods as early as 1770 for some provinces and stops pre-annexation. http://rulers.org/rulf.html

Although it doesn't list the British Consul & Agent Fiji from the 1800s.

I find it interesting that a Bentley possibly married one of Bully Hayes twin daughters...can I ask if this was in Fiji? A Whippy descendant apparently was a close associate to Bully Hayes...

Good to find another link...I'll find out which Whippy descendant it was unless someone else may know it before me...
