I am trying to locate a record of the death of Pierce Jones Williams, who was a cotton planter in Fiji (Levuka or Na sanambula, I think ) about 1875-85 or so. I believe that he died there but have never been able to find any record of this event.
Writing to the National Archives has proved fruitless as they never answer. Is there SKS resident in Suva who can check at the Archives in person. This man was my great grandfather, born in Anglesey, Wales in 1830.
Are there any cemetary records for the Suva area - he was an Anglican.
Any help greatly appreciated. Any costs will be quickly refunded.
John Freeman from 60 miles north of Sydney, Australia.

There is an index to the people buried at Suva cemetary. I know because my brother was there recently. It gives the burial date and religion of burial - but I don't think it tells you where the plot is.

Sorry that's all I can tell you.

Hello John,

I don't know if you'll read this message after eight long years, but am wondering whether you ever found out any more info about Pierce Jones Williams and his death in Fiji?

Pierce is included in our extended family tree via his marriage, in Victoria, to Sophia Plummer.

Pierce died in August, 1871, only one year after they had arrived in Fiji, and from what I can gather, he was buried on their land.

I have managed to piece together some info about his short time in Fiji, and his death, which I will send to you through the email service.

Hope you receive it.

Kind regards, Anne

If you have a Mormon Family History Centre near you, you can order in a copy of the microfilm of European Deaths in Fiji. It should be one of these, depending on when you think he died.
General deaths 1880-1888 - FHL INTL Film [ 763604 ]
General deaths 1871-1879, 1889-1891, 1894 - FHL INTL Film [ 763605 ]
General deaths 1896, 1899-1900 - FHL INTL Film [ 763606 ]

These films are photographed copies of the registration books, so you can print out the actual entry, once you find it.

His death could also be mentioned in the Fiji Times. Try the large libraries in Sydney, to find one that holds it on microfilm
