Convict T/L Question WA

Has anyone come across this?
How feasible is it that a Foreman in a business would register Ticket of Leave employees under his own name. It would appeear the owner was busy with other businesses and may have had a bad credit rating -if there was such a thing back in 1860's.
No Ticket of leave men assigned to the owner in this business when T/L men were still available in WA.
Your thoughts would be appreciated. Remember it is WA

If anyone as access to Passenger Arrivals into Western Australia, 1839-1890, would they please be able to do a look up for me? I am not sure what information is required and I am not sure if they even arrived between those dates, may have been 1891-1893. The people I am looking for are Patrick Moran (born approx. 1871, Tuam Ireland), Delia O'Dell (born 1873) and Martin O'Dell (born 1881).

Any information regarding these databases would also be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

According to the Leonora Cemetery Board Records (in "The Forgotten Pioneers of the Eastern Goldfields", Harry Argus), he is more than likely buried in the Pioneer Cemetery, however there is no record of his age, religion or cause of death. He died on the 18th May 1900. There was a news paper published in Leonora, which if you can find on microfiche, may have some information. The newspaper was called, Mount Leonora Miner Newspaper.

Hi Jan
Sorry about delay in answer. Have had trouble with computer Yes George and Charles were my great uncles. Walter was my mother's father and so my grandfather. Maa Louey was my great grandfather. Although he spoke Cantonese and a dialect as well, he also wrote and spoke Mandarin which was the administrative language of China as he was an official before he left China and a Mandarin of the 3rd order. I have a copy of his shipboard passage from Hong Kong.
It would be lovely if we could meet and compare notes. I would love a copy of his photo when he was young

I know this is an old thread but I came across this article when looking for details of Albert Ashbury who was a distant relation of my husband.
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/84759323

The reception is at the Muddock's house so that might solve the question of Amy Rose's new surname. They were obviously good friends so perhaps the child was given to them to raise after her mother's death.

Hi
I have just started to read all of this on the Maa family that you have written
You say that you have met George are you a reletive or not?
Maa Louey (Ma Sui) and that is how it was written, not Maa LOUEY. He was Tai Sun. The dilect he spoke was Tai Sun not Mandarin or Cantonese. Charles always wrote his surname as Maa Louey because that is the name the family used, it should have been just Ma. There are 4 Ma characters which one did you reserch?

Hi Kerry,
I did not know that Fred was in Canada. He was always in and out and we never spoke about personal matters.
aunty Vi would talk about the family, mother and father and about his family in china. Also how her father favored the boys over the girls.Said that they put Mar for their surname name because it was more anglicized.
Aunty Vi lived in New Zealand with her first husband Davis Fred's father can not remember his first name might of been Fred too. He was a gambler and spent a lot of time at the races. She was continually struggling to have food and rent. Finally left him and got a job in a hotel, then he committed suicide. She never told Fred but whether he knew in later years I am not sure. She also ran the boarding house where she lived and told me having to collect the rent made her strong. Married Armstead I can not remember much about that marriage except he always wanted her back and she regretted not reconciling with him. As I remember he was a bit jealous of Fred. Which one of Uncle Walters children is your parent? Is Winnie still alive?
Regards Jan
Thanks Jan. There is some confusion here. My great grandfather Maa Louey was born in 1835 in Canton, China and travelled to Victoria as Ma Lui in 1866. I have the shipboard record. Not Ma Sui. A hand written "L" can look like an "S". He married Sarah Watson in Tasmania in 1877. I have the marriage registration details. Maa Louey was naturalized in 1896 in Tasmania and I have those details. Walter was born in Tasmania to Maa Louey and Sarah Maa Louey (nee Watson) in 1879. I have his birth details. I also have the details of Charles birth in Victoria and have visited his grave in Launceston. After a huge amount of documentary research and visiting many locations personally I have located documents from everywhere and sadly noted huge errors due to illiteracy, poor transcribing from old script and guesswork and also a lack of interest. Fred Davis did pass away and my mother and I attended his funeral.

Thank you. That link about Midlands history was very interesting.

I finally worked out that the Congregational Church is one of the churches that became part of the Uniting Church and have been able to locate three of the baptisms through their archives. So far we haven't located church records showing my great-grandparents were the first married at Helena Vale but I've located two articles on Trove that state the church building has been completed and first services would take place on Sunday 8 Jan 1899 so it is looking likely that the family legend is true in this case.

My grandfather was Walter John.
Hi, my family name is GAWNE, my mother's maiden name was Wilkinson. She was the younger sister to Reginald(we called him Reginald because he was named after my grandfather who also was called Henry), there were 4 children starting with Reginald, Elsie, Arnold, Joan Mary, in that order of age. Joan Mary would be the only one living now, maybe, she would be in her late 70's.
Where about in the world do you hail from, I have a lot of new family in Australia.
Brian

Hi Brian,
The Henry Reginald you are talking about and the one mollipops is talking about appear to be two different people.

The one mollipops is talking about married in England and arrived as a married man with a child,, by plane.
Also his date of birth was 1922 where as yours was born 1920.

Do you have any idea when your Henry Reginald was supposed to arrive in Australia? (before or after his sister and/or father)
Why was he on a ship in the China sea? (was he enlisted or similar)
Are you positive his wifes name was Irene?

Kellie

Not sure it is the same family then as this family did not arrive until 1965 and there is only one daughter - also they arrived by plane not ship?? This would also indicate he married in the UK, not Australia. Do you know that they definitely lived in Western Australia?

Also, was he Henry Reginald (as in your subject line), or Reginald (as you refer to him in your posts)?

PS Likely marriage for Henry R to Irene DAVIES (as below) in 1941 at Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire. Children's names (freeBMD) do not match those you have given below...don't think this is the right family...

Hi, Yes we have the correct family, never knew my Aunt Irene's maiden name, he was part of 4 children as you show the one you have missing is Joan Mary, she is the youngest. Reginalds father was Henry Wilkinson and his mother was Elsie (do not remember her having a second christian name). The tale that was told in the family as far back as I can remember was that Reginald's ship was sunk in the China sea and was rescued and taken to Aus. There he stayed married Irene and had 4 children Pat, Cheryl, Peter and Denise. that is as far as I have got so far as I have been following my father's branch of the family. If you want to contact me direct please do at dragonlord@clara.co.uk
Brian Gawne

Hi skydragon58

You say 'was' so I assume he is no longer living.

Is he the Henry Reginald WILKINSON who died in 2011 aged 90?

Is this his arrival with wife and daughter?
WILKINSON Henry Reginald born 3 June 1922; Irene (nee Davies) born 18 November 1920; Karen Ann born ***; travelled per aircraft departing UK on 31 October 1965 under the Assisted Passage Migration Scheme

You can see record at NAA Recordsearch. It appears Irene may have died in 2011 aged 91 but not sure it is the same person. If they only came out in the 1960s I'm not sure about the 'extensive family'...then again I might have the wrong man altogether!
