William Titley alias William Bell

William Titley alias William Bell

Classification: Query
Surnames: Bell Titley
I'm trying to find the birth details of my great-grandfather. He married my great-grandmother Louisa Florence Riley in Fremantle in 1891, using the name William Bell. Various Bell family documents staet he was born in Ballarat aorund 1860, father George, mother Elizabeth.
According to my grandmother (born Grace Florence Bell):- Louisa left William Bell in the 1920s, because he had been cited as co-respondent in a divorce case (I found a record - Harp vs Harp). He ended up in the old mens home (Sunset) and died there in 1933. After he died, the family discovered paperwork that showed his name to be William Titley, and that he had abandoned a wife & children in Victoria before coming to WA, and so the marriage to Louisa was bigamous.
I have a death certificate for William Titley, 1933. But I have not been able to find any details of parents, previous marriage etc.
I would be grateful for any leads that would help to solve this longstanding family mystery.

Do you mean that you have this death certificate -

TITLEY William Male PERTH 1031 1933

which has enough information for you to identify him to be this William BELL -

BELL William m. RILEY Louisa FREMANTLE 75 1891

"... Various Bell family documents state he was born in Ballarat around 1860, father George, mother Elizabeth."

What documents are these, can you give details. After his marriage, 1891, what documents do you have that record names of William BELL's parents - George and Elizabeth?

"...After he died, the family discovered paperwork that showed his name to be William TITLEY, and that he had abandoned a wife & children in Victoria before coming to WA..."

What paperwork is this, can you give details.

Unfortunately, the death certificate does not mention the name Bell. I only have my (deceased) grandmothers word that they were the same person.

Unfortunately, William Bell is a very common name, but I can't find a death for William Bell around that time. Most family trees show him dying in 1909, but given that he was registered in court more than 10 years later, not to mention still showing up on the electoral rolls, I figure that must have been a different William Bell.

Regardless of the surname, I'd like to identify his parents - eg I'd like to know if they were in fact of Scots heritage, as he apparently claimed. But for that, George & Elizabeth just doesn't cut it...

Unless you say otherwise I am assuming that you, personally, have no solid evidence ie. documents to support the information you are using............and no certificates relating to BDM events in this family?.

Everything is sourced verbally from family?

BDM WA birth
BELL Annie Victoria William / Louisa RILEY Canning 1920 / 1894
BELL Florence Norman William / Louisa Florence RILEY Fremantle 761 / 1896
BELL Olive May William / Louisa Florence RILEY Fremantle 1784 / 1898
BELL Stillborn male William / Louisa Florence RILEY Fremantle 1992 / 1900
BELL George Axton William / Louisa RILEY Perth 4527 / 1902
BELL Grace Florence William / Louisa Florence RILEY Fremantle 2810 / 1903

death
BELL Annie Victoria 8w William / UKN birthplace UKN 982 / 1895
BELL Florence Normon 3d William / Louisa Florence RILEY Fremantle 797 / 1896
BELL George Axton 6m William / Louisa RILEY Perth 2496 / 1902

Is this your family?. Do you have any other children born to this couple?.

If you are wanting to research the origins of William BELL m. 1891 you need to get the marriage certificate.

Hi Leigh

The birth and death of a child in 1896 had the middle name NORMAN/NORMON that I think may be a clue to the parents of William????

George TITLEY and Eliza NORMAN were at Daylesford near Ballarat in 1864. Only two births of daughters recorded for this couple in 1862 and 1864, and a son George (with middle name Norman) born 1866. There is no marriage in the VIC Index for George and Eliza so it appears they came from somewhere else when William was an infant?

ADDED: Found other records with a possible birth for William posted in a new message!
