The marriage certificate 1891, RILEY and BELL, has witnesses Edward BURKE and Emilene RILEY.

........are brothers, and from Ballarat, birthplace of William TITLEY aka BELL?.

and if BURKEs and William TITLEY are from Ballarat does not mean they know one another but might be worth a closer look.

Without seeing the documents relating to earlier family for William BELL, it might be that some details have been assumed by repeated telling ie. children might not be born in Victoria.............. children born but no marriage so registered in mother's name etc

Possibly the divorce matter did not progress beyond preliminary hearing. Divorces were reported in newspaper.

REILLY Louisa Florence James REILLY / Elizabeth WILKINSON Fremantle 1179 / 1876

Hi fryerning

1) Yes, Emmeline Burke nee Riley was Louisa's sister.

2) Her husband was Robert Edward Burke, but I believe he answered to Edward.

3) It looks like Emmeline & her husband were living in Fremantle in 1908, not Boulder, so I don't think there is a Ballarat connection there.

4) But you're right that some details were probably assumed - it looks like William Titley's first marriage was in Queensland (these dates fit well):

The following info came up on the Ballarat board, where I had also place a query (I've asked for the source, but no reply yet):

BRISBANE.-William Titley is charged, on warrant issued by the Brisbane Bench, with deserting his child Mary Louisa Titley, care of Mrs. Doyle, Terrace street, New Farm, on the 6th September
last. Description :-A native of Victoria, a fencer, 25 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, slight build,
dark complexion, dark hair, clean-shaved except moustache, long thin face ; one of his eyes appears to be half closed. He was in Melbourne on the 1st ultimo.
12th March, 1889.

5) This lead me to:

Name: Mary Ann Sheehan
Spouse Name: William Titley
Marriage Date: 02 May 1885
Marriage Place: Queensland

6) So yes, William deserted his wife Mary Ann & daughter Mary Louisa, moved to WA, assumed the name of William Bell, and married my g-grandmother Louisa Florence Riley. No one in his WA family knew that Bell was an assumed name, until they went through his papers after his death in 1933. He was buried under his original & legal surname of Titley. (I gather the Bell women all felt like disowning him, after discovering the WA marriage was bigamous)

Hi Leigh,

Re....
"4 His father was George, and his (step) mother Eliza - again fits the details for William Bell on my Grandmother's birth Certificate. (William Titley's biological mother, Agnes, died the year he was born, so probably from childbirth, and so Eliza was the only mother he would remember)"

I think you have William FITLEY's birth as 1859.
His mother did not die in childbirth. She died in 1860.

Name: Agnes Titley
Birth Year: abt 1841
Age: 19
Death Place: Victoria
Father's name: Farrel Bryan
Mother's name: Margaret
Registration Year: 1860
Registration Number: 11170

Thanks Mary - yes, you're right - she probably didn't die in childbirth, although, depending on the exact dates, she might have died of complications following childbirth. Guess I won't know unless I locate the death certifcate (and maybe not even then)

Hi Leigh,

Fryerning provided a lot of information, about the "possible" first marriage of William TITLEY, to Mary Ann SHEEHAN.

As pointed out by Fryerning, Mary Ann, later married EMMETT, and died on 31.12.1898. Mary ann's mother, was Mrs Bridget SHEEHAN, who used the alias of Mrs DOYLE, as per the Police Gazette info, provided by Kellie. Here is some more info about these two ladies, which often appeared in the Brisbane newspapers. Trove search words...

Hi Mary,

Yes, Mary Emmet was the right age to be William Titley's daughter.

Even today, marriages often break up after the birth of a child with a disability, and the mother is left to raise the child.

Very sad that he deserted such a vulnerable child.
