I am looking for my half sister, whom I have never met, who went to Australia in 1947. She arrived in Fremantle WA onboard SS Asturias in December 1947 aged 8.

I would like to have information about her or her family. She may have been adopted in Australia.

Hi

You're welcome Patricia, sorry I can't help. Did Estelle come out on her own or with the older brother?

Estelle went to Australia on her own. She should have gone with her younger brother Richard but at the last minute Richard had a rash and was refused to go on board. I cannot imagine how Estelle felt. Her two older brothers Robert and John were in the UK with their mother. Estelle and Richard were put into a Catholic home without the consent of my mother.by their spiteful father who supposedly was taking them for a day out. It took a long time for my mother to find their whereabouts but by then it was too late. I have an address in Perth where she arrived to but this is now shops. My older brother Robert received a letter from her many years ago but that has been the only contact. Robert is still alive, John died in 2006 and Richard we have no contact but I believe he is still in the UK.

Oh Patricia

This is such a sad story and an all too familiar one apparently. Have you tried the WA Births Deaths and Marriages to see if they can do a marriage search? It's a long shot but might be worth a go.

What was the address in Perth (I know it's now shops)? What was the time frame that your brother received a letter? Did she still have the surname Yates? Was she placed in an orphanage or "work farm" etc? Sorry for all the questions but the more information you can give might just jog someone's memory and help in searching.

I'll keep looking for something/anything for you in the meantime.

Best wishes
Karin

I appreciate your interest and help in looking for Estelle. It is very kind of you.

The following information is all that I have for her apart from d.o.b etc.

Estelle arrived in Fremantle WA in Dec 1947 on the SS Asturias. She is on the passenger list as Miss ESTETH W L Yates aged 8. Ticket No: 197582 Authority CEM&c- Passenger No: 1340 Berth 172. She went to 62 St George's Terrace, Perth along with a boy aged 10 - Master Joseph Wyles - Passenger No: 1339 Berth 270.

I can only imagine she was told she was an orphan and then to have her younger brother taken away from her just does not bear thinking about.

I have tried searching the Australian archives but have only found the same information that I have now.

I believe she wrote to my brother Robert back in the 80's. She was still in the Perth area then.

I believe from what I can remember from the letter, although I never saw it, was that she was married, however, unhappily, and she may have had children.

Best regards - Patricia

Hi
I've included a couple of links that may be of help to you if you don't already have this information

http://www.tuartplace.org/
This is a support service for those in care including child migrants based in Fremantle WA. I had a look through their newsletter and found no mention of Estelle but she might be in one of the photos (if you see a resemblance to yourself or your Mum) or you may even post a "searching for" ad?

and this site called Find and Connect with particular info in regard to catholic child migrants
http://www.findandconnect.gov.au/guide/wa/WE00859

They are certainly well worth contacting.

62 St Georges Terrace was known as Forrest Chambers and I think they were mainly offices so would have been the office of a child welfare, catholic organisation etc. There is a photo of it in 1932 at this site
http://purl.slwa.wa.gov.au/slwa_b3894779_1

I hope some of this is of use to you

Karin
