For info on Heinrich and Mary it might be an idea to try and find their natrualisation papers. (well Mary's fathers)

I'm not sure exactly how to do it for such early years but the National Archives should have information on how to go about it.

I am researching John James Treacy who married Margaret Helen Williams in Echuca Vic Aust in 1912.
John (1880-1951) was born in Pinegroves Victoria & was the son of Matthew Treacy & Margaret Mary Mooney.
Margaret Helen Williams (1886-1960) was born & died in Echuca Victoria & was the daughter of James Louis Williams & Ellen Lindsay.
I think they had 5 children in Echuca.

I can't find the family at all in 1841. None of them seem to be around. William Allen son of George Allen, undertaker seems to be tha father. At any rate he paid the family a significant sum toward the upbringing of the child.

I had thought maybe he was Mary's.

The only thing that got me thinking was Dinah is listed on Tas Archives as having a baby in Tassy in 1836, before she married.
Dinah and James go to England sometime 1836 and return abt 26th DEC 1836 with no child or baby with them.
Where did she leave the baby????
She may have left it in Tassy while she travelled for a few motnhs!!! But who would she leave her new born baby with in Tassy????
Then Dinah and James marry 29th DEC 1836 and her first return to the stage was FEB 1837.

The whole Rudelhoff family is missing from the 1841 census.
I thought maybe they took the baby back to Germany or where ever as in the family tale.
The whole Rudelhoff family is back in England by the 1851 census with no sign of Edgar.

Dinah returns to England sometyime after James death and remarries in 1847, returns to Australia 1848 no sign of Edgar.
IF a family member had been looking after him, you would think she MAY have taken 10yo Edgar with her.

Maybe the ALLEN's took him on?? (adopted/fostered)
Would fit with family story. Mr Allen taking on Dinah's baby!! People may have thought they had had an affair, especially with Dinah disappearing from England (sent in disgrace)

That is why I am keen to know the name of the ALLEN man who was supposed to be Edgars father. To see if I can find them in census.

Edgar also appeared to own Steel Co's in America. (mainly New York) He travelled back n forth quite a bit so can see why he may not show on English census, BUT he certainly didn't spend most of his life living with Mary. Maybe towards the end. But he is not living with her on 1871/1881 census and she died 1882.

Finding him in any census could really help work things out.

It appears he maybe the only child of Dinah and James MURRAY. Only child of Dinah at all unless she had more after marrying BOYLE.

I tried looking in 1851 for him as he isn't with Mary or Mary Ann anymore. I was mainly looking for him as a boarder or nephew or something.
There is one that might fit,,,at what appears to be boarding school..(still kind of fits with him being sent away for education)

In one of the records I found it mentions MR Rudelhoff in Tassy,,,I forget the date but maybe that is where Heinrich was when missing from 1841 census????? (I will have to find it and check the date)

Maybe in later years she did..I don't know.
You would think if Mary took him on then there would be a birth/baptism for him as RUDELHOFF with Mary listed (or Dinah listed as mother). You think he would show with Mary on the 1841 census as a 4yo OR the 1851 census as 14yo.

Mary cannot get a baby then name that baby after another family. Not unless the family agree and sign the papers. Even then the baby's birth would be listed as ALLEN as father and Dinah as mother...OR Mary as mother.

Who was the supposed father of Edgar?? If we can find him living with people in the 1841/1851 census it may gave some clues.

Frank (Francis Jaquim) died 1899 aged 66yo at Smythedale.
(son of Francis Jaquim MUNIZ and Maria JOAQUINA)
Agnes died 1921.

They both have wills listed at PROV.

Looking for information on Jane hills first child born in 1873. Arthur Robert Hills born in North Melb father unknown, she later had my gggrandfather Isaac Hills in 1875 Melb father again not listed. Jane then met Robert Henry Griffiths about that time and they moved to SA and had children last name Griffiths. Isaac's last name was listed as Griffiths on all the info i have.
Im wondering what happened to Arthur Robert Hills/Griffiths did he die young or where did he go? Ive found a Arthur Griffiths born in 1875 died in Perth 1905 could be him, not sure or he could be in SA somewhere....need some help..

Madeline was born in Daylesford Victoria. As I mentioned her father's name was changed from Sylvestro/Silvestro to Silvester/Sylvester, probably simply to 'fit in'.

To download an uncertified image online ($17.50) go to https://online.justice.vic.gov.au/bdm/index-search?action=pu... and fill out the form with the name year, and registration number I provided, i.e. Pincini, 1871, 22763. You need to use a credit card but it is a secure site.

James' death cert will be at the NSW bdm site, you can order it online or use a transcription agent. His parents marriage is also there. He had 11 siblings.

James and Madeline and the children went to NSW as this is where they married/died.

Note that James appears in the records as James, James Dawson and James Dowson. You would be best to order his birth certificate to check what is correct.

I have found two brothers who lived and died in the right area with these names but the other dates don't fit. If Joseph & Kate's marriage is the definite lead you are chasing, it would be best to order their marriage cert to check parents names.

Abraham DAVIS died in Fitzroy Sth in 1920 aged 58, son of Zachariah DAVIS & Jeanette MARKS (reg 10160). This makes him born c1863.

Solomon DAVIS died in St Kilda in 1939 aged 61, son of Zachriah & Jeanette (reg 4071). This makes him born c1878.

Abraham was born in London and Solomon was born in Victoria. Abraham arrived in Victoria as a baby with his sister Deborah and parents Jannette and Louis (don't know where 'Zac' came from!), both aged 36, in Jan 1864 aboard King of the Seas. Louis and Janette had a further 5 children in Victoria (including Solomon in 1878, reg 4029).

So no connection to Sydney that I can see. The Solomon who married Annie can't be the same one as above, as they married in the year he was born!

Stil could be a link somewhere. They were definitely Jewish, if that helps. I have more on the other children if you like; they all settled in Melb East, Carlton, Fitzroy, Richmond areas.

Albert Tighe, aged 43 years, of High-street, Kew, hairdresser, petitioned for divorce from Margaret Elizabeth Tighe, aged 33 years, on the grounds of misconduct. Thomas Shanks was joined as co-respondent. Mr. Hotchin appeared for the peitioner. The parties were married at Fitzroy by the Rev. Kinsman in February 1894. There were two children. The suit was not defended.
Evidence was given that when served with the papers in connection with this case, Margaret Tighe admitted the misconduct. Other evidence showed that in December, 1905, Mrs. Tighe and Shanks took a position as "married couple" on a station, and lived together on a cottage on the property.
A decree nisi was granted, with costs against the co-respondent. [hard to read, not 100% on ages]

Three children, named Agnes eleven years, Albert Ferdinand, seven years ; and Isabella Tighe, three years, were brought before the Court as neglected children. It was stated that the father, Peter Tighe, was a labourer, and lived in Rokeby-street. He was at present in employment, but at times was disabled from work by rheumatism. The mother of the children was dead. The Bench adjourned the case till Tuesday, in order that the father might be brought before them. Messrs. Eade, Hailes, and Langridge were the
magistrates present.

On Margaret Elizabeth SHANKS' death reg in 1945 aged 73, her father is shown as Francis WHEATLEY, mother unknown (reg 9413). This makes her born c1872, not 1888.

Marriage for Margaret Elizabeth WHEATLEY, born Melb, to Albert TIGHE, born Richmond, in 1894 (reg 1685). Chn Albert Ferdinand 1895 and Francis Peter 1897 in Carlton.

Birth for Albert Frederick TIGHE in 1863 in Richmond, parents Peter & Bridget nee MOORE (reg 22589). Death as Albert Ferdinand TIGHE, in 1939 aged 76 in Fitzroy, son of Peter & Bridget nee MOORE (reg 10364), so born c1863. Looks like he also remarried, in 1907 to Annie Jane NEAL (8987).

Marriage for Margaret Elizabeth WHEATLEY (not TIGHE) to Thos Jos Alexander SHANKS in 1907 (reg 4353). Thos born Templestowe. Dau Ellen Margaret born 1908 Carlton (9752).

Where are you getting your 'facts' from?!

Best to start with death and/or marriage cert and work back. Choose whichever husband you are descended from and get the marriage cert, or get Margaret's death cert.

There is no death registered in Vic for a Chas SMITH in 1882 aged approx 50 yrs of age. Are you sure the date is correct?

Nor is there a marriage for John MAIN[S] to Eliza SMITH in Victoria or NSW c1884. Looking at their children, they married prior to this anyway (before 1876).

The Eliza who died in Prahran in 1908 was aged 52; her parents are shown as George & Eliza (reg 7391). There is a George SMITH who died in Sth Melbourne in 1882 aged 52 (reg 2475) but his parents aren't given.

John MAINS died in Prahran in 1918, son of John MAINS and Margaret IRVINE (reg 10487), aged 74. John arrived in Victoria aged 5, in July 1852 with his parents John (32) & Margaret (32), and siblings Thomas (11) and Margaret (3). Another son, Archibald, was born in Victoria in 1855.

Children of John & Eliza Jane:
1. Eliza Ann c1876-1877
2. Margaret Jane 1877
3. John Thos 1879, m. Florence Hannah REDFERN 1910, d. 1950 Melb

Eliza's death cert might be your best bet. It will list all children and should say where she married and was born, possibly more on her parents as well.

Just a couple of whacky theories for you to think about.

We really have very few facts concerning Edgar - we have never found a baptism and it unlikely he would have a birth cert. Although birth certs came in during 1837 there were only a small percentage of babies registered.

It has always been assumed that Edgar was Dinah's child or Mary's - but he could be the child of one of the brothers.

There was also a lot of baby farming at this period - he may have been totally unrelated. He could have been the child of a rich but but unmarried mother who simply gave a lot of money for his upkeep and education. We do not know with any certainty which year he was born in.

Perhaps he was the child of Dinah or Mary and never baptised and kept under wraps during the census.

I have found them in the 1841 census but as Ruselhoff not Rudelhoff.

There are other errors but I am sure it is them.

They were in Watney Street, St. George's, Tower Hamlets.
Mary is there together with Mary Ann and William Allen.

Mary has been muddled with Mary Ann.

Mary was born in Bermondsey in 1783 or 1785 (cant remember), so her entry should say not born in this county as she was born in Surrey.
However Mary is said to be 21 years old!! The enumerator has swapped her details for those of her daughter by accident.

Have a look and you will see what I mean.

Heinrich/Henry was not listed but could have been at work.

So far so good.
However,I am unable to confirm that SOLOMON DAVIS child of ISAAC and RACHEL DAVIS (NSW) is infact my great great grandfather.As you noticed there is no birth certificate for Joseph Davis born Sydney approx 1875.There is evidence that his father was a Solomon Davis a 'dealer'from Sydney.
So many facts correspond...other facts leave doubt.
I will keep working on it.
