Looking for info on DOCTOR WF GOSS, Surgeon from (I think) London, please, other than that on Medical Pioneers Index - been there.

Surgeon Superintendent on "Bride of the Sea" Liverpool to Geelong, arrived Aug 11, 1854. Then seems to have evaporated into thin air. Have extensively searched Vic deaths & marriages: no "WF" matches, and some promising "william"s turned out to be red herrings. Also searched NSW, QLD, & WA deaths: no match. No online search facility for Tas, SA & NT.

Not directly related: my GG g'mother was on the "Bride of the Sea" & Drs GOSS & Grace were a very important part of her eventual life story, which I am researching for my Masters thesis.

Would be VERY grateful to anyone with any info on the disappearing Dr GOSS or anything else on the the "Bride of the Sea"... (Also checked the unassisted passenger list: 1 single female aged 19 I thought could be 'with' Dr GOSS - no marriage found. All other unassisted passengers contained in families, but no family listed for GOSS.)

Thanks in anticipation
Beck

Hi Beck

I don't know if it is 'your' Dr Goss but there is a Dr Goss listed leaving Victoria for Adelaide in March 1862 aboard RANGATIRA.

He appears to have travelled alone.

Might be worth a look!

Thanks so much for this lead - will look into it. Had previously done a search on this site, but only for Melb papers: will look further afield!

Cheers,
Beck.

There is loads on "Dr Gosse" in SA papers, but I don't think any of it is 'my' Dr WF Goss. The waters are muddied by a prominent Dr William Gosse (at one time acting colonial surgeon) whose dates don't match up for my Dr.
Still looking!

Dr William Gosse (1812-1883) m Agnes Grant (1811-1891).
In 1850 the Gosse family with their six children, left England for South Australia, on the barque Elizabeth where they arrived in December.

Once there the family found accommodation in Hindley Street where the doctor set up practice. He was later elected to the Board of the Adelaide Hospital and campaigned hard for the immunisation of young children. In 1855 he was Medical Officer responsible for the Adelaide Servants Depot. (note from me, also prominent in work on Adelaide Lunatic Asylum)

Son Charles became a Dr also.

Son William Christie Gosse: In 1859 joined the Government Survey Office. William and his brother Harry both worked on the construction of the Overland Telegraph Line. William discovered and named Ayers Rock.
William also named Agnes River, Harry's Reservoir and Mount Hay in the MacDonnell Ranges. In 1875 William Gosse became Deputy Surveyor General.
