Lawrence Dugas

Lawrence Dugas was born June 5th 1845 in New Brunswick Canada and baptized under the name Lazare Dugas. He left Canada to enroll in the UK Army and then moved to Australia. I found on Ancestry his death record in Australia as follow :
Lawrence Dugas birth year about 1844 aged 62 died at Footscray, Victoria Australia in 1906 Reg. # 13024.
With the above information could someone find a marriage for my Lawrence Dugas in Australia. I presume he got married as I found also a marriage record for a Jas (James) Dugas in Victoria in 1901 with Annie Comerford which is probably a son to my Lawrence Dugas.
Any information on this subject would be really appreciated. Thanks

Independent (Footscray newspaper), Saturday 14 December 1895
Anne Dugas of Albert street has reported her husband, Lawrence Dugas missing. He was an old pensioner, and recently sold his pension to the Imperial Government for £200.

Looks like he went on a spending spree with his windfall!
Independent, Saturday 21 December 1895
Lazarus Dugas of Albert street, arrested at South Melbourne yesterday, for wife desertion. Had £170 with him when he left. Only £23 now, difference said to have gone in a questionable manner in ten days. Quick spending if true.

Another article has an Annie DUGAS living in Greig St Footscray in 1896 with daughters Beatrice (age 13) and Margaret. http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article73249140

There are two deaths for Annie DUGAS'
One in 1934 aged 80, in Footscray, parents unknown (reg 6222) and one in 1945 aged 69, also in Footscray, daughter of Michael Jno COMERFORD and Mary Ann Lucy JOHNSTONE (reg 1515). The latter was married to James DUGAS.

First appearance in Victoria appears to be with birth of a daughter named Florence DUGAS in Footscray in 1891 (reg 33131). Parents Lawrence and Ann (nee VENN). Sadly, Florence died in 1912 in Carlton, aged 19 (reg 939).

Lawrence and Ann lost another daughter at age 19, in 1905 - Beatrice, in Williamstown (reg 7394).

Then marriage of Jno Jas DUGAS, born England, to Annie COMERFORD in 1901 as you already know (reg 6029). John died in Melbourne in 1940 aged 63, as DUCAS (reg 12495). See http://www.australiancemeteries.com/vic/maribymong/footscray...

Jno Jas and Annie had the following children:
Margaret Ann b. 1903, m. Roy Alexander CRICHTON 1929, d. 1977 (m. & d. as Mary Ann)
Beatrice b. 1905, d. 1905 (days old)
Violet Florence b. 1906, m. Ronald WILES 1929, d. 1974
James Laurence/Lawrence b. 1909, m. Margaret Elizabeth PEATLING 1937, d. 1959 (m. & d. reg as DUCAS)
Rose Margaret b. 1912, m. Leslie Jno RICHARDS 1932, .d ?

The other daughter of Lawrence, Margaret DUGAS, born India, married in 1901 to Jno Wm KNOTT (reg 4040). They had the following children, all born in Footscray:
Myrtle Margaret b. 1902
Jno Arthur b. 1904, d. 1970 (as Jno Arthur Wm)
Phyllis Irene b. 1911
Allen Roy b. 1915, d. 1959 (as Allan Roy)

Margaret died in 1917 in Carlton, aged only 36 (reg 7816), as Margaret Ann KNOTT - death reg confirms parents names. Burial in Footscray: http://www.australiancemeteries.com/vic/maribymong/footscray...

Margaret being born in India fits with Lawrence serving in the British forces.

P.S. If you search FreeBMD, you will find the birth of John James DUGAS in 1877 in Farnham. This certificate might give you the clues you need.

P.P.S. There are 4 phone listings in Victoria for the surname DUCAS. Assuming John Lawrence and Margaret Elizabeth (nee PEATLING) had sons, this might be worth checking out - http://www.whitepages.com.au/#

I doubt he married in Australia.
He was still in Canada when he enlisted and shows on the 1861 census.
Viewing original records helps.

Hi Hellie,
Thank you so much for taking the time for this research. I really appreciated. I know he was on the 1861 census but we lost his trace after this in Canada and never find yet his enrollment in the army. Did you find something on this ?
He was in Farnham Surrey England where his son John James was baptized in 1877
then we found him in India from about 1881 to 1885 where two children were born. From 1895 to 1906 he was in Australia where we find a few documents. Now I am trying to find his marriage record with Ann Venn most probably in England where his first child was born.
Once again thank you so much for your help.

Hi Mollipops1
You gave me a great hand and I really appreciated what you sent me. With this I am now turning my research to England in order to find a marriage record for Lazare Dugas and Ann Venn.
Thank you so much and if ever you find something else on his enlistment or anything about this ancestor I'll be glad to get it.
Thank you so much.
