Surnames: Halley McKay
I am trying to find a birth date and death date of Alexander Halley and his parents. Alexander married Margaret McKay in Melbourne Victoria Australia 1845. Margaret McKay died in 1904 and is buried with her daughters family in Ballarat. There are so many Alexander Halley's. Any help would be truly appreciated.

Yes I have purchased the marriage certificate but due to the year they married there is very little information on it, only there names and date married.

They were married at St James, Melbourne.

Have you enquired re the registers of St James. There might be something else there.

Does the marriage cert. indicate ages, occupation for Alexander, witnesses names?

Birth cert. for children b. 1853+ should have age and birthplace of father (Alexander).

I have never bought a birth certificate. Thanks I will get to that later tonight once I check the dates the children were born. The marriage certificate only had the names of the people being married, no age or occupation, it did have witnesses but dose not look like there are related.
Thanks

There are a few Public Trees on ancestry.com which list Alexander Halley and Margaret McKay. But either there is another couple with those names, or tree owner is in error.

Did your couple have a daughter named Annie, born 1846 Geelong, married William Henry Wright Wilson, died 1914 Geelong? If so, at least this entry is correct.

But this tree has Alexander Halley born Hertfordshire, England in 1856! (Sounds like the same person who attached my g-grandmother's children to another woman with the same forename - remarkably she was married five years before she was born. And then got really upset with me when I messaged her telling her of the errors! But at least she took my mother off - before blocking me from her tree.)

Another tree gives the correct year of marriage (1845) to Margaret Mckay, and Alexander's death in Geelong on 18 May 1920. It also gives Margaret's place of death as Geelong, but no date. Is this correct? According to this tree, Margaret was born 1825 Hertfordshire, England - but no parents.

I don't think any of the trees are correct - they seem to be a meld of information. But there might be a few factual snippets there in there somewhere.

There was an Alexander Halley, aged 21, arrived Geelong on 22 March, 1845, on Sir George Seymour, ex Pentonville Probationary Prison.

There are several Halley burials listed on Geelong Cemetery site, http://www.gct.net.au/search.html, including Alexander, 18 May 1920, COEO*B***145. In the same plot are Jessie Halley, 10 May, 1934 and Mons Alexander (Is Mons a name, or does it mean something else?), 18 January, 1915. Are these your people?

Cheers
Barbara

Hi Barbara

Yes Annie was their daughter and she did marry William Henry Wright Wilson they are my Great Great Grand parents.

Yes there are many other ancestry trees and they don't seem to match up.

Margaret Halley nee McKay died in Ballarat at the age of 76 but did live in Geelong as per Australian Electoral Rolls, 1903-1954, she was buried with her daughters family in the Ballarat Old cemetery but stated, New Cemetery on death certificate. Also stated on her death certificate that she was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. The information on the certificate was filled in by her daughter. Her parents were John McKay and Margaret McKay Unknown Maiden name.

The Alexander Halley who arrived on the Sir George Seymour sounds very close, I only wish his age was on the marriage certificate so I could line it up. If he is the right person that means he was only in Australia for 1 year before he and Margaret became married.

The Alexander Halley Buried in Geelong Eastern Cemetery is the grand son of the man I am looking for. Jessie was his wife maiden name Bell. Mons Alexander Halley was there child he was only 1 year of age.

I truly appreciate the time you have spent helping me on this, it really is quite difficult, all the things that happened around this man were in date when records were not as informative as later years unfortunately.

Kind regards
Steven
