Thank you for replying. I saw some of your earlier posts from 2003 - and was hoping I'd be able to contact you. I'm fascinated by the history of this property (which we purchased in 2010) and am currently sitting in one of the rooms in the old house that your greatgrandfather built that I've set up as my office! I've managed to find out quite a lot about the family (the internet is fabulous for that and I've scoured the digitised newspapers for any references and have been amazed at what was reported back in the 1800s).

One question you may be able to answer - there's an article in the Victorian Government Gazette in Feb 1862 stating that Robert Hill Kinnear was initially in partnership with a James Kinnear - both "squatters at Lower Moira Station". I was wondering if this James Kinnear was possibly RH's half-brother? I can only find reference to one Patrick Kinnear born in Longforgan during the relevant timeframe, ie 1782, to be Robert’s father. There are, however, two marriages recorded in Longforgan for Patrick Kinnear: one to Elizabeth Hill in 1811 and one to Margaret Matthew in 1831. Patrick and Elizabeth had five children between 1811 and 1824, including Robert Hill in 1820; Patrick and Margaret had three children between 1833 and 1836, one of whom was James in 1834 and who died in 1875 in Ballarat. Do you know if I'm on the right track here? The trouble I've found with looking into family histories is that sometimes I have had to make assumptions (and then find that I'm way off-base!).

This reference to the dissolution of partnership between RH and James Kinnear is the first mention of RH on this property. I haven't as yet been able to ascertain exactly when he took over the licence to the pastoral run, Lower Moira, although he was definitely listed as Licensee in 1862, or when he purchased the intitial homestead block at Madowla. I have maps from the 1860s showing the extent of his ownership, and I know he sold in 1876 (again, not exact information, but from knowledge as to when the next owners bought the property). I am in the process of writing a history of the property - earlier histories have been pretty sketchy and written before access to online newspapers etc and consequently not thorough and, at times, not entirely accurate. It started as just being about the property, but I've got enthralled by the various owners as well. Interesting times, and obviously farming in those days was lot more lucrative than it is today! Some of the houses that were built by the owners after they left the property are quite staggering!

Do you happen to have any photos of RH? I'm in the process of getting a professional photo of the portrait that hangs in the Bendigo art gallery (of Robert Hill, Rosalie and child Rosalie - probably painted before 1851 in Scotland before the birth of Robert Shiell and before they returned to Victoria). I've also tracked down a photo of the townhouse they also owned in Echuca when the lived here at the farm (unfortunately it was demolished in 1950s).

I am the Greatgranddaughter of Robert Hill Kinnear.I don't know a lot about the property. We visited there a few years ago and were given the tour of the home and gardens and the little cemetery. He was a friend of Baron Von Mueller and they used to swap plants.
I can give you his history when he was in Scotland, when he left etc.

of John Fredrick Crocker and Mary Veronica Kathleen Grace Cockerill (Molly)she was my gran mother, I have never seen her or even a photo as she left my mother who was only 4 and her young brother with there granparents on par Freddys side,My siblings and I have been told by our mother and friends that Molly was a very fine looking lady with a very dark complection and that I am very like her and would love to hear from anyone that my have a photo of Molly and any more information on the family tree.

I think I may be a decendant of Herbert - John's brother. I think Herbert had a son, also Herbert (Bertie) who would be my Grandfather. I am the daughter of Charles Ahern (Berties son to a first marriage - Kathleen Barclay). Charles Ahern was abandoned at an early age and would like to see a photo of his Mother, Kathleen Barclay. Any information (if you have any) would be appreciated. I have reason to believe Bertie Ahern had a second marriage after Kathleen's early death at 27. I have never met Bertie.

I am reseaching the history of this property in north-central Victoria (between Echuca and Barmah). Previous owners that I need more information on include:
Robert Hill KINNEAR (1820-1902) who owned the property beteen 1862 and 1876; Henry Thomas LITTLEWOOD (1828-1896) who owned the property from 1876 to 1883; Matthew Patrick O'SHANASSY (1846/7-1900) - son of Sir John O'Shanassy - who owned the property from 1883 to 1900; and William Nicholas CAIN (1882-1978) - son of William Cain MLC (1831-1914). The Cain family owned the property from 1904 until 1950.
I am happy to share any information that I have gathered to date.

I am a descendant of James Young who was buried at the old cemetery. He owned the place when it was called Hamilton having bought it from Sarah Maria Hamilton in 1850. John Cockburn Johnstone was his son-in-law. I don't know who George Smith or William Brown were but family stories say they were men who worked on the property which at that stage was a vineyard. The last burials of the total of six graves were Dr Carlyle who died on 8 Sept 1844 and Claudia, the young daughter of Mrs Hamilton. There is a memorial to Dr Carlyle inside St Thomas Church in Port Macquarie. I don't think any of them were convicts. The graves were originally where the caravan park is now - the headstones were moved some years ago and now there are only four of them. Hope this fills in gap or two for you.

thanks so much for your reply. Unfortunately it is the wrong one. Our reg was married to a Francis. His son is the Lawrence we are looking for and seems to have vanished. Our Reg is buried in Stawell, Lawrence went to Geelong and ran a newsagency. if stillalive, he would be about 70ish I have called every thornton in the phone book to no avail. he also had a brther called Graham who died quite young in a car accident.

Yes I did have a look at the 1911 census, and the Norah Fitzgerald seems to have married and become Norah O'Brien. Looks like she came to Australia with her Mother, Augusta Fitzgerald, married a Joseph O'Brien, had some children, then returned to England. She appeared on the 1901 census, also the 1911 census. I don't know if this is the lady my Grandfather had as his NOK, but the connection with Victoria Australia seems to indicate she was. My Grandfather also named his daughter Norah.... perhaps this is just another coincidence. I don't know what the connection is though as I know nothing at all of my Grandfather. Maybe they were close friends in Australia, as she has a son that would have been around his age.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hiya,
Have you checked in England (1911 census etc) to see who his NOK Mrs N FITZGERALD (looks like) is??
Usually back then if father was deceased but mother still living the mother (or eldest living brother) were supposed to be listed as NOK..

As his father is deceased maybe his mother remarried??? Or maybe it is a relative (aunt, sister)

Stephen Hoskin & Amelia Brown emigrated to NZ in 1869, they arrived in Akaroa on 13/11/1869 with 4 children Stephen Archelaus b1861 Mary Anne b1863 James Henry b1865 & Stephen Edward (Dick) b1867. they had 2 more children George & Alice in NZ. My GGGG.. Grandfather Thomas came to Australia with Stephen and William. Roy Hoskin has researched Stephen & Amelia in great detail. I can probably give you more info on James Thomas, I think he is William's son

I have been told my some distant relos that when g-grandfather Isaac Howarth d1905 Narrandera that g-grandmother was cared for a family by the name Rosenthal. I cannot find any connection to the two families.It was also told that the McCannons/McKenna/Cannons, my g-grandmother's maiden name, and the Rosenthals were close friends on the NSW/Vic border towns of Echuca & Moama. The Rosenthals were a well established Hebrew family of Echuca Vic and part of a Hebrew community. Isaac Howarth was supposed to be a Depot Manager of a Timber Warehouse on the Valley (Murray) River at Echuca.How do I confirm this?

Now on the otherside of the river was the town of Moana (Moama) NSW with a streel bridge crossing in between the two towns. On this side resided the McCannon/Cannons/McKenna families.

Isaac apparently was the manager of Deniliquin Race Course as well around 1860s.
Now I can't find anything to back this story up.

living mollie is married to a catholic, as i know his brother is a well known tv personality very popular trying to get information but dont want to intrude.
the ebenstein son remained most of his life in bendigo connected to the racing scene burried there under name henry william ebeston , all help would be appreciated ps doubt if harry had any wife or children?

Rosemary - I am helping an elderly friend with his tree. His gg-grandfather is George Hodges. I can't find a marriage for him and Mary Ann Keens. Is this because (as was suggested in another post) she was married to Thomas Price? If so, then no marriage between her and George??
