I'm working on a surname study for PINNEY and am trying to find any available information on the PINNEYS of Australia. If anyone knows about the first PINNEY immigrant to the country, I would greatly appreciate any information that could be shared. If there is anyone that you know of that might be researching the name in Australia please let them know of my interest.

I don't know if anyone checks this but I am a Pinney descendent and have a lot of information on my branch of the family and would love to speak with anyone who has any information on descendent of Thomas B Pinney or possibly a brother Amos Pinney.

Thomas arrived Canterbury 20 August 1873 aboard " Mary Shepherd" as a Horsekeeper and family legend has it that they came to Australia 4 years later about 1877. Though I have not found these details yet. Thomas came with his 2nd wife Ellen, whom he married in March 1873 and 10 year old son on arrival to NZ. I have details of early life in England where he is listed as a postal and goods deliveryman and his 2nd marriage took place in London in March 1873. His first wife was Maria Watkins in 1859 in Lambeth. I have yet to find a death certificate for Maria. Thomas was listed as a greengrocer at Newtown in 1881 and it appears that his daughter Martha born about about 1860 came to Australia at 18 yrs and arrived 13 May 1879, aboard "The Clyde" Sponsored by Thomas B Pinney. Martha married Thomas Parker at Balmain 28 july 1881. If anyone has anymore information please contact me, I would love to hear from you. I am trying to find out what happened to Thomas and Ellen Pinney, if the returned to England ?????? any help would be appreciated

Hi Philadelphia,

I am not related.

This might be the death of the ... "and 10 year old son on arrival to NZ".

Was he Samuel PINNEY?

21899/1949 PINNEY SAMUEL THOMAS (Father) THOMAS (Mother) MARIA (District) TEMORA

Marriage of Samuel PINNEY's daughter, Martha Maria PINNEY, at Temora in April, 1920.

Who were the witnesses at Martha PINNEY's wedding.

Where her parents (father) alive when she was married?

Mary

Sorry Mary,
No I don't know if they were alive I am waiting on the Marriage certificate for Martha Pinney to Thomas Parker to arrive, I have only just applied for it. My branch is from her brother Samuel B Pinney who arrived aboard the Mary Shepherd to Canterbury NZ, I have had no luck in finding out when the family came to Australia from NZ, other than what family have told us, "that it was four years after arriving in Canterbury, NZ. There appears to have been some some sort of fall out between son and father, supposedly due to the step mother but that is only rumour, I have no actual proof of any of this. Samuel was married in 1886 at Cootamundra and it appears that he had been estranged from the family sometime prior to this. The only other thing I know is that he was the youngest four in hand coach driver for Cobb & Co from Grace Bros at the age of 14 years, which should have been about 1877, though again I have found no evidence of this yet either. If you have any information that would help I would greatly appreciate it, I am trying to find out what became of his father who was listed as a poultryfarmer on his marriage certificate.

Hi Philadelphia,

I don't know what happened to Samuel's father and step-mother. I looked everywhere a couple of days ago, to find their deaths in Australia, but no luck. I only have this info, from the obituary, about Samuel....

His obituary, published 22 August 1949.

Martha's marriage certificate, will help out hopefully.

OK, Martha married 1881, and Samuel (her possible brother) married 1886.
So, if the word "Deceased" was not showing for the parents on the 1886 marriage certificate, then it probably won't be showing on the 1881 marriage certificate.
Anyway, she may have been a few months under-age, and needed permission to marry.

Let us know when the certificate arrives, if extra details, are forthcoming.

Mary

Hi Philadelphia,

Re... " Thomas came with his 2nd wife Ellen, whom he married in March 1873"

I cannot find this marriage on New Zealand, BDM's.
What names, was the marriage registered under?

Mary

EDIT:

Sorry, the March 1873 marriage was prior to his arrival in New Zealand. I can see this after reading your message. Sorry.

Hi Philadelphia,

I checked his NZ arrival.

Name: Thomas B Pinney
Event Type: Immigration
Event Date: 20 Aug 1873
Event Place: Canterbury, New Zealand
Gender: Male
Marital Status: Married
Nationality: England
Age: 37

Ellen PINNEY, Age 28
Sam: PINNEY, Age 10.

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FST8-CTB

I can see on Samuel PINNEY's marriage that it is indexed as PENNY, in 1886.

5289/1886 PENNY SAMUEL BARRETT FANNY COOTAMUNDRA

So, I will check BDM's under the name of PENNY, and see how I go.
