seeking info on Michael and Bridget Rouhan .. daughter Hannah and son Patrick. Hannah married my great grandfather Thomas James OShea in Gympie,1873. Gympie times give Michael as father in Buninyong. Son Patrick died 1892 in Creswick.
I have a baptism notice on Hannah (1846) Barnagore, Tipperary.
How did the Rouhan's arrive? Who came? Was Thomas James OShea with them? Apart from his baptism in Kilvemnon, Mullinahone, Tipperary (youngest of 8 children) he next turns up applying for a miners licence in Gympie 1871. Died 1895. Buried with Hannah (died 1928) in Gympie's Two mile cemetery. Any assistance greatly appreciated.
Tom

Thomas and Hannah's wedding cert, 1873, gives Hannah's usual place of residence as Buninyong, and birthplace as Barnagore, Tipperary. Her father Michael Rouhen and mother Bridget Mara. Patrick Rouhen's death records 1892, Creswick, give same parents. So our OShea travel window is somewhere between 1835-1871; and Hannah's between 1846 and 1873. As the crow flies in Ireland Thomas .. Kilkevmnon, Mullinahone and Barnagore are not that far apart (and both mining centres). They could have known each other before travel. I'm still guessing though that Thomas first went to the Ballarat area first .. then to Gympie.

We have some information in our family history, family of rouhans arrived in ottowa, some went to western canada, Dennis Rouhan (relative) came to Vt There is a reference of
Bridget Rouhan being the daughter of Dennis Rouhan and Mary Mcgraw coming from tipperary ireland around 1848, according to our records, Bridget died in Canada West, date unknown, We have records of brother James in our family tree, he was born march 3, 1836, so most likely Bridget was born 1830's
Dennis went west and we do not have info as to when he died.
Please let me know if any of this lines up.

Thanks for that info .. I'm still on the trail .. but I'm sure there is a match .. the problem is that brothers and sisters etc all named their kids with similar names .. so the Denis's and Bridget's multiply. I'm going to Barnagore, Tipperary in the next two months to meet with living Roughan's related to my great grandmother Hannah Roughan .. who married an OShea here in Australia .. Michael Roughan married Bridget OMara and had at least three sons and a daughter .. James, Denis, Patrick and Hannah .. both Patrick and Hannah somehow ended up in Buninyong Victora. I've found two Whelan brothers here in Australia who've been working on the Roughan's for some years .. their grandmother was Bridget Roughan daughter of the second marriage of Dr.James Roughan (he had 3) who came to Australia also, and I presume to meet up with her aunt because this Bridget Roughan married the Whelan near Buninyong. My email is tombarn2002@yahoo.com.au if you're interested in more on the Roughan's and further developments. Kind Regards Tom Barnett

Hi there,

Trying to connect the detail given here with an ANNIE ROHAN daughter of BRIDGET O'MEARA and MICHAEL ROHAN was born c1837, married MICHAEL BURKE - have a likely mariage for her in Templederry RC parish NEENAGH to MICHAEL BURKE. She died in BUNINYONG in 1907, details above from her death cert. Can't find a baptism for her but there is one in the same RC Parish c.1845 for a HANNAH Rouhan, parents BRIDGET O'MEARA and MICHAEL ROHAN.

ANNIE ROHAN, son THOMAS and husband travelled to Victoria on the Marco POLO in 1863 arriving Victoria November.

Templederry and Barnagore are 9.1 km apart

I live in Ireland and am trying to assist an Australian visitor who will be here later in the Summer. Any help or info most welcome.

Pigache from Ireland has helped to identify another child of Michael Roughan (c1803-1889) and Bridget Omeara (c1805-1882).

Known children (there would be more) are:-
*(Dr) James (c1827-1913) lived in Ireland
*Dennis (c1834-) lived in Ireland
*Patrick (c1835-1892) moved to Australia as a single immigrant at age of 20 in 1855
*Annie (c1837-1907) moved to Australia with her husband and 4 children in 1863
*Hannah (1846-1929) moved to Australia as a single immigrant

Following the lives of the three children who are known to have moved to Australia:
(1) Patrick Rou(g)han immigrated as a £1 assisted immigrant to Sydney, NSW aboard the "Lord Hungerford" in 1855 at the age of 20. The passenger list identifies him as the son of Michael Roughan and Bridget Omeara. His parents were at the time living in Dawley, Ireland.. Coming to NSW as an assisted immigrant brought him to the land of opportunity, the land of gold, at little cost to0 himself, unlike many other immigrants at this time who had to pay full passage. Once in Sydney he was able to assess where to go to joiN in the gold-rush, and would have heard that Victoria was the place to go. He then made his way to Ballarat in Victoria, possibly overland as did so many others from NSW. In 1856 in Ballarat he married Catherine Tobin. Still following gold they moved to Amherst (near Maryborough where their first child was born in 1860. They then moved to Daylesford in the period 1863 to 1869 where more children were born. Finally by 1873 the family had moved to Creswick between Daylesford and Ballarat. Patrick died in Creswick in 1892.

(2) Annie Rou(g)han had married Michael Bourke in Ireland. They immigrated to Victoria in 1863 aboard the Marc Polo. With them were their 4 children:
Thomas (c1835-1933)
Sarah Ann (c1858-1934)(married surname Munday)
Micahel James (c1860-1916)
Bridget Teresa (c1861-1927)(married surname Crowl)
Arriving in Victoria they moved out to the goldfields and a Creswick in 1864 their first child born in Victoria arrived. Creswick was not far from Daylesford where her brother Patrick and his wife Catherine were living with their children in 1863. By 1866 the family had moved to Eganstown even closer to Daylesford where they remained until at least 1869. The family then moved to Buninyong near Ballarat where Annie died in 1907.
Annie's children born in Victoria were:-
John Michael (1864-1903)
Johanna Margaret (1866-1949)(never married)
Patrick Edward (1869-1935)

(3) Hannah Ro(ug)han arrived into Port Melbourne as a single immigrant but no shipping record has survived. She joined her elder sister and her family at Buninyong near Ballarat. The first record of Hannah in Australia is at her marriage to Thomas Oshea in 1873 in the gold-mining district of Gympie in Queensland. She is described as a resident of Buninyong. It can only be assumed that she travelled to Gympie to follow the man that she loved who had moved from Buninyong/Ballarat to Gympie in about 1871 when he obtained a mining license at Gympie. It looks like Thomas Oshea had arrived in Victoria at about the age of 21 aboard the "John and Lucy" which had docked at Geelong in 1856. He then made his way to the Ballarat Goldfields. In his last years in the area he had met Hannah Roughan. In 1871 he moved to the Gympie Goldfields in Queensland to try his luck there, but he kept in touch with Hannah. Hannah left her family behind in Victoria and travelled to Gympie to join him, where they married in 1873 and began their family. (It is assumed that Hannah joined Thomas in Gympie because she described her place of residence at the time of the marriage in 1873 as Buninyong, and because there were no children born before the marriage.)
