I am looking for any information re Cecilia Croghan married to Richard Atkins who lived in Sandhurst (Bendigo Vic. Australia) from c1860 to c.1880 when she died aged 46.. She was the sister-in-law of Jonathan Latham of Latham and Watson mines and was originally from Tipperary, County Sligo, Ireland and a daughter of Peter and Letitia Croghan, nee Thompson arriving in Australia aboard "Rose of Sharon" in 1855.

Thank you. I already had these from Trove although not the cemetery information, but I am grateful for your reply. Have you by any chance come across Richard Henry Atkin's death information?

Hi Margaret,

When the daughter, Kate ATKINS / WILKINSON died, her father is shown as Henry ATKINS. I wonder whether, Richard Henry ATKINS, was sometimes known as, Henry ATKINS?

I think he (R. H. ATKINS) was still alive in 1886, when Kate married, George WILKINSON. It is clear that George's father was deceased at that time.

The Argus, 17 May 1886:

Marriages
WILKINSON—ATKINS.—On the 6th inst., at St. Mary's
Church, St. Kilda, by the Very Rev. Dr. Corbett, V. F. A., George J. Wilkinson, youngest son of the late William A. Wilkinson, of St. Kilda, to Kate, daughter of Richard Atkins, late of Sandhurst. No cards.

What about this death in 1888?

Name: Henry Atkins
Birth: abt 1813
Death: 1888 - Victoria

Mary, many thanks for all of the information which I did have and I think you are right that the Henry Atkins' death in 1888 is Richard. The birth year is incorrect as Richard was born about 1835 but orally it might have been misheard as "about 1813" rather than "about 1830". I take it the death was in Melbourne?? or does it say Sandhurst? I shall check the Bendigo papers again.
Thank you again.

Hi Margaret,

Children's marriage certificates, should state, if the parents are alive or deceased.

The year of 1813, on the Henry ATKINS, 1888 death registration, is taken from the age on the death certificate. The age must have been shown as 75. The Ancestry computer system, calculates the year of birth as 1813.

I could not see anything in the papers for an ATKINS, 1888 death.

The registration place on the Vic BDM's database, matches with Melb*.

The age doesn't seem to match, for your man.

Thank you, Mary. I do think Richard died around 1888 which would make him 53 and he disappears so completely around that time. I had hoped to have had some of Kate's descendants doing some research as daughters seem to pass on family lore more frequently than sons, but no one but me seems to be doing any delving into that particular Atkins family. In any case, none of the other children appears to have had children (with the exception of Latham Peter and I know all about him).

Thank you very much for your information...

Margaret
