Surnames: Vernon, Taylor-Vernon, Scougal
I am trying to learn where my great-great-grandfather Joseph Taylor Vernon originated from. Any information you may have would be greatly appreciated!

The catch is that some people say his surname was "Taylor-Vernon", but others say it was simply "Vernon" (with Taylor being a popular middle name for his family).

Here is what I know about him so far:

He was born in approximately 1865 (unsure where).
On 21 June 1890 he married Ada Scougall in Waratah, Tasmania.
Their marriage certificate does not list any relatives of Joseph.
He died on 12 February 1914, aged 49.
He lived on King Island, Tasmania, Australia.

I'm unsure whether he migrated to Aus, or if he was born here. I assume he was born overseas, because there are no records of his birth in Aus.

He and Ada had three biological children, Ada had an illegitimate son to another man (John Tuttle). Their children were:

1888 - Kenneth Campbell Tuttle
1891 - James Taylor Vernon
1896 - Martha Taylor Vernon
1900 - Emma Grace Taylor Vernon

P.S. I have attached a photo of Joseph.

Thank you.

Hi Monique,

Do you have Joseph's death certificate? From 1896 the deceased's place of birth was recorded, and from 1914 the names of their parents. Of course it does depend on how much was known by the informant.

This seems to be a likely baptism for Joseph, and most of his siblings were also given 'Taylor' as a middle name.
