James Ballard of King Island
I am trying to find out information on the following people. James Ballard born 1858 (Sydney) and Kate Violet Eliza Harris. They married in 1897 and were located on King Island. I believe from family stories, he was a seamen but have been unable to locate anything about him Kate later married Lewis Barlow and both died on King Island however I am finding it difficult to locate these people. Kate was my great grandmother.

Re: James Ballard of King Island
Hi,Well seeing you had no replies and considering that most King Island people come from Tas mainland there is always records.I am in no way related to your query. You will find your answer at Tas Colonial Index or portal.archives.tas.gov.au.This will give you siblings ,children etc.You can then request from Hobart Archives Original Birth certificate,Marriage etc.James Ballard i would look for a Historical Index which should be in NSW Archives. Most old records are in Sydney as well. However Marriage certificate from Launceston will give his Parents or Witnesses etc.Lewis Barlow i did not check.Best of luck should put you in right direction.Roy

Re: James Ballard of King Island
Hi Since you have all the basic information from the TFL and IGI marriages, suggest you might find the sort of personal details you are looking for in the newspapers of that time - NLA site TROVE. Could the James Ballard seaman who left Hobart for Sydney in 1822 have been James's (1858) father?

Re: James Ballard of King Island
Hi Julie I did have a quick look at the Examiner/Mercury and found a number of references to the Ballard families. Thought I had struck gold with my first try in 1897!The death and much obituary information for James Ballard But not yours? Did find a possible connection to a James Ballard jnr, son of a John with indications that John and James sr. may have ben brothers.

Re: James Ballard of King Island
Hi,Your Grandmothers birth record is derived from Baptism records which the Archives would hold because it will be a church record from one of the Churches in Evandale-which was formally called Morven.Which is near Launceston Airport.Hope you find all the info.Roy

Re: James Ballard of King Island
Should have done this with my first post, just in case you have had no success with TROVE. Zhis is a synopsis of James Ballard death notice, published in the Launceston Examiner Thurs, 17 June 1897.
"Yesterday morning, Mr. James Ballard, a resident of this city for over 50 years expired at his residence, George Street, at the ripe old age of 82. Mr Ballard when a young man served in her Majesty's navy and came to Hobart in a man-of-war vessel, which he left at that port, and immediately moved to Launceston. Deceased started a business as a basket manufacturer in York Street, He was one of the first members of St. John's Friendly Society.. Deceased married 47 years ago and leaves a widow and family of eight. There are five daughters and three sons, all of whom are married some reiding in the other colonies." Incidentally his Will is available on line at the AoT Name Indexes data base. It is also of great interest.

Re: James Ballard of King Island
"....James Ballard b. 1858 (Sydney)" "...Kate later m. Lewis Barlow"
Where does this information come from ie birthplace of James and marriage to Lewis Barlow.
Children born to James Ballard 1899 to 1910. Children born to Lewis Barlow 1915 plus.
And William Lewis Hector Barlow b. 1907 to Lewis Barlow.

Re: James Ballard of King Island
Hello jschulz57 As you may already know there is an alternative to the James Ballard described in the death notice mentioned in my post of 20.03.2011. A James Ballard arrived in Hobart on 12.07-1848 aboard the Bangalore, convict ship as Convict No. 20681. He had been convicted of highway robbery and sentenced to 15 yrs. His trade is given as basket maker and in 1852; he applied for permission to marry Ellen Crawley, herself a transportee who arrived on the Earl Grey in 09.05.1850. In relation to your enquiry, the records of this James Ballard confirm he had a brother John.
