Hi Kelly
Thank you for this information. I already have this but am trying to find out more re James Ballard. My grandmother Hilda would not speak of him. I am trying to find out more info on him. He was widowed when he married Kate and records I have found have him born in either Tasmania or Sydney NSW. I have no info on his previous wife or when he came to Tasmania or when he died.
Many thanks for your contribution
Regards
Julie

It would seem that the source of the marriage information is an abbreviated version through LDS ie. so I am assuming that you have not seen the certificate. That is why I was asking for the source of this information, not just a repeat of it.

You need to get this marriage certificate.
Tasmanian marriage certificates from 1896 have very useful information -
place of residence, usual residence, year in which the person is widowed, children (number living, number dead), father's occupation.

With the year of his wife's death, and if it is recent to this marriage, you know to look for a Ballard death in that year, and starting in the place of his usual residence.

The witnesses, and their addresses, might be Ballard relatives or his young adult son/daughter, or in-laws - relatives of the first wife.

If father and son have the same occupation, then other male Ballards of similar age (to James), similar occupation, might be related (death notices NSW or TAS for "...brother of James"). Is it a Ballard family occupation?

Is his mother Sarah Ballard, or just Sarah ie he does not know her maiden name?. If an adult does not know mother's maiden name, it might mean that she died at a young age and James has limited child/young adult memory of her - a clue when looking for his origins in NSW.

I would keep an open mind about his age - he is quite a bit older than Kate. Human vanity being what it is, he might have taken some years off to arrive at his stated 39 yrs.

You have very little to work with here to locate your James Ballard so you need to throw a wide net - and the first marriage would be good to locate. Good luck.

Cheers

As earlier suggested you should read through the newspapers of that time . These are on line at Nat. Aus. Library site of TROVE. Also the AoT Name Indexes - wills- departures- convicts- and TFL (John Ballard born 1807) etc. will all add to your knowledge.

Morning Julie

Have done a little more searching with some positive results:-

James Ballard and Kate Harris had one possibly two children-

- Lenna Emily Matilda Ballard born 1899 in Launceston.
- She died as Lenna Emily Matilda Conley in 1977 in Launceston
- Her Will (on-line) mentions a niece? Judith Anne Clarke
- and a son Leslie John Conley
- She left an estate of approx. $ 12,000
.
- The Conley family were and still are a well represented family of King Island
- A Cyril John Conley from King Island embarked with the 15th Battalion in Melbourne on 22.12.1914.
- There are a number of newspaper references to the Conley family in the Examiner
- a Royce Conley was / is councillor and mayor on the island.

Hi,Just to further the last post from Juleigh.Yes the will of your Grandmothers daughter can be viewed on Tas Colonial index, then click, Wills' and you can read the lot. Also gives last address of deceased.Yes two children a daughter and son and who knows maybe more?On the King Island Conley family if you like to dig into that side you can see Cryil John Conleys war record at www.aif.adfa.edu.au as well as George Edward Conley King Island looks as if from Currie King Island.Leslie John Conley also has a war record on naa.gov.au .These records verify Cyril as next of kin.So all matches. If you need to know about Conley it is normally easier to contact a Conley on King Island and yes there is the Deputy Mayor of King Island Royce Conley and no doubt he is related to the Conley that married Kates daughter. His e-mail is royce.conley@bigpond.com.He would know probably info about Barlows of King Island who were probably from mainland Tas anyway. He will be able to tell you where to get info about anything on King Island.Everyone knows everyone on King Island unless you migrated there .I think now you have more than enough now.I did check historical index for James Ballard Sydney Nsw but no Birth record.Would need to know an area of nsw where from to try and match to a ancestor. But i am sure when you get all the info it should start to peace together.Best of luck
