Re: Alicia Sproule

Hi

I think you have your Alicia's mixed up. I am a descendent of this family as well, we share Adam Sproule and Maria Orpen. I have spent a lot of time researching this family up and down and think I have finally got them sorted out.

I dont hae my notes at the moment but I can give you a general gist. First of all the family was notoriously bad with names. We have Sproul, Sproule, and Sprowles all in the same family and changing left right and centre.

Adam had a daughter called Alicia. He also had two sons called Edward and Adam William amongst others. Edward had a daughter called Alice born in around 1877 to Martha Bayly/Bailey/bayley daughter of Alfred Bayley from Longhope. Adam William had a daughter in 1879 called Alicia to Alice Bradley the son of George Bradley from Sheffield.

Alice sometimes called herself Alcia and sometimes Alice. Alicia appears to have done the same. Later to complicate matters, Edward remarried and had a further daughter who he also named Alice.

Alice/Alica Sproule/Sprowle the daughter of Edward and Martha was married in Sydney to Auguste Lamotte in 1899. They ended up in kalgoorlie and were my great grandparents. There appears to have been some conflict in the family because i found little records of contact between Alica/Alice Lamotte and her tasmanian relatives. In fact one record I found listed her as dying as a spinster in tasmania in the correct year. Alicia Sproule, daughter of Adam and Alice died in NSW as a spinster.

I can supply the proof of this if you wish and can gie you other details if you wish. It has taken a long time to sort out, I spent 6 months researching George Bradleys line only to discover I was wrong

Hi Andrew,

I can't answer your specific questions, but would love to share notes with you. I'm trying sort out all the Armstrongs from the Wynyard - Somerset - Burnie district. I suspect they are linked, but I haven't worked out exactly how. My Great Great grandfather was Richard Armstrong, a convict. He married Julia Burke in 1855 and they moved to Table Cape (Wynyard). They had six children, including a James, b 1869. I can't see how they are related to your James Armstrong, apart from they seems to be in a similar district, have children with similar names, and have interconnections with similar families.

I'm wondering if, after Richard got his ticket of leave, he was joined in Tasmania by siblings, nephews or cousins.

I believe Richard was born about 1821 and may have come from Ironbridge in Shropshire, England.

Do you have William Arthur's birth cert? William was still a convict until Jan 1856, so it should give some indication that he was not a free man. Did William and Clara marry in Tas?

William Sands' indent gives his wife's name as Harriet ( W. Har t, living at Brighton) and sister Ann living at his native place, i.e. Mayfield. There is a marriage for a William Sands in the Mayfield district in the December Qtr of 1847. Five other people were married in the same quarter, but there is evidence from the census that they are all accounted for except for a female named Harriet May. I don't know if this is your marriage, but it would be worth getting the certificate for this William's father's name, occupation and witnesses. I cannot find this couple in 1851, but there is a Harriet Sands living in Brighton as a domestic servant. She says she is unmarried, but that doesn't necessarily discount her. The William who married Frances Hall appears on later censuses.

As always there are a few Williams to choose from, but there was a William Sands with an only sister Ann born to Joel and Ann Sands. He was baptised in 1827, but could have been born a few years before that. Your William's age is given as 16 when he served his 6 weeks for pinching rabbits in 1843 (Criminal Registers). The reason that William and Ann were the only children is that Joel was transported to NSW in 1829.

If you haven't already, I suggest you contact some of the people who have trees posted with Sands from Mayfield as they may be able to at least eliminate some of the Williams born around that time.

By the way, if you haven't seen it, the IGI has a Clara Sophia Hart born at Holborn in London in 1837, d/o Joseph and Sophia Hart. Alfred Joseph was baptised on the same day, but born in 1834, and a Frances Eliza born in 1830.

Hi, thanks for replying. Now, my husbands Great Grandfather was William Henry, married Clara Sophia. Hubbie's Granddad was William Arthur, married Emma Jane Cook, who died in childbirth, then married Mary Maria Saggers, she died in 1910 in NZ, and he was told that his Granddad died in Melbourne in 1910, but no, he married a Charlotte Bohmer and had 4 or 5 children, whom we know nothing about. You just got ta love families. Friendly lot.

Now we are under the assumption that William Henry is this convict, who comes from Mayfield, who arrived on the Fairlie on the 30 July 1852. We are also under the assumption that he was made a constable and sent to Oatlands, where he was still a bad boy. He married an Ann Wilson on the 6 February 185 in Oatlands. If he was married in UK, is he the one who married Francis????? Ann arrived on the Sir Robert Seppings, sorry for this mistake, on the 18 March 1852 with a freeman called Joseph Barnes. She made application to marry Joseph Barnes & William. William won. Then in 1855 a William Henry is having children with Clara. Same man?? I am at my wits end, have no idea where to go next, completely stumped, as a learner, there is a word HELP. Thanks for replying.

What sort of info are you after? Conduct records and indents for William Sands and Ann Wilson are online at http://portal.archives.tas.gov.au/menu.aspx?search=11 It is interesting that their marriage was approved considering that William stated that he was already married. A check of the birth regs for the children of William and Clara should confirm whether he was the same person - they should give his occupation. Have you seen the marriage application for Ann and Joseph? Did he definitely arrive in Tas on the same ship? The index entry for Joseph just says "free", and the Sir Robert Seppings (not Sir George)came straight from England with female prisoners.

Hi Karen
Joseph and Elizabeth married at Swansea on 20 April 1881. In 1882 at the time of the birth of their first child, Ada, Joseph described himself as a farmer residing at Seymour. He is also described as such in the 1904 Tasmanian Post Office Directory. Also in the Directory a Mrs. E Bedggood is listed as the Postmistress at Seymour. This is probably Elizabeth but it could have been Ellen Maria Bedggood, nee Thornbury (another relative of mine) who was the widow of Joseph’s brother Richard (b: 1856 d: 1888)

On the Assessment Roll in the THE HOBART TOWN GAZETTE Dec 21 1880 Joseph Bedgegood (sic) Jun., resident at Blind Creek is listed as the occupier and owner of cottage and 50 acres at Blind Creek. Joseph Bedgegood jun., resident at Doctor’s Creek is also listed as occupier of 208 acres at Doctor’s Creek, 9 acres at Blind Creek and as owner and occupier of a 2 ½ acre allotment at Seymour. He is also listed as the occupier of 60 acres for which the proprietor is listed as the exors of Joseph Bedgegood jun. (?)

As far as I know they had six children:
1. Ada Margaret Fredrica BEDGGOOD b: 13 Feb 1882 in Dist Of Glamorgan. 1919 resident Seymour
2. Elizabeth Maud BEDGGOOD b: 5 Aug 1883 in Dist Of Glamorgan
3. BEDGGOOD b: 30 May 1885 in Dist Of Glamorgan d: 31 May 1885 Glamorgan
4. Arthur John BEDGGOOD b: 4 Sep 1887 in Dist Of Glamorgan d: circa 1947
5. Richard Fredrick BEDGGOOD b: 6 May 1890 in Dist Of Glamorgan d: Aug 1946 - 1914 Farmer
resident Seymour
6. Amy Maria BEDGGOOD b: 17 Aug 1893 in Seymour, Tas d: 27 May 1984 Scottsdale Hospital and
buried Seymour Cemetery. Married George William Thomas McGiveron 1 Nov 1916 Fingal

I hope this is helpful to you. You can find all the information and sources I have for the Bedggoods on my family tree (jenistree ) which is posted at RootsWeb's WorldConnect. Any feedback, corrections or additions welcome.

Regards Jenny

Hi Fryerning
Thanks for the follow up. The bit about Sandhill is interesting and I'll see if I can find out more about the burial ground. Undertaker's or burial ground records sometimes don't survive though. The 'Joseph McMahon' you mention is the correct one - his adult life is reasonably well documented I've found.

I also have been wondering if Sarah Brigg 'formerly Cultchett' (as it states on the CofE microfom record), widow, could be the same woman as Fanny Briggs who m. Joseph in the Launceston RC church six years later. It's conceivable that they were 'formalising' the marriage according to the rites of the RC church - but why would the priest write 'Frances' not 'Sarah'??

I have looked and not found a relevant death record for 'Sarah McMahon' in TAS or VIC.

Someone suggested Sarah and Fanny might be sisters ie Joseph married Frances to look after his small son;) I've found a record of a Fanny Culcheth who was m. 1825 in Surry England to a Leonand Briggs: certainly these names occur in TAS - but that Leonard Briggs didn't die intil 1861. No a 'Sarah Culcheth' of the right age yet.
Ah well the hunt goes on: thanks again for the help
Lexia

An ancestor Thomas Barnabas BASTARD of Adelaide was b MSX England 1818 and d 1883 in Adelaide. A son called Thomas George BASTARD moved to Tasmania. He died in Belleverie Tas.

There was in the early 20th century a George Thomas BASTARD who may have came from South Australia and was involved in mining and prospecting. There is a Mercury story at http://tinyurl.com/ylyy66x mentions an Adelaide company. It may be the company only that is South Australian and not G T BASTARD.

Are these 2 BASTARDS the same person?

Re: John Shaw - sources
Hello,
Deaths of John and Mary Ann are from the BDM index of the Launceston Examiner, burial from the Carr Villa Cemetery database, which shows exact sites in the cemetery. John and Mary have not left a will. I have the births from the Tas. BDM Pioneers Index. John/Hector John would seem to be born Feb 1876. Some births are just not registered, someone was too busy that day etc., so that might be the reason. Sometimes second names ie Victor's are just changed by preference along the way - or maybe I just can't read my own notes. A death certificate for Mary and for John would show place of birth and time in the Australia. John would likely be the informant for Mary's death. John, dying later, would probably have details provided by an adult son or daughter which might be less accurate than a spouse's information, being that they have known each other for longer. Death certs. in Tas. are expensive so you might like to delay that option to see if another source might produce a place of birth for John.
Also, and from the Examiner - Jane Elizabeth d. 11 Aug 1887 at Westbury Rd (presumably L'Ton). Thomas William d. 20th May 1896 at parents residence 10 Laura St Launceston. Does that fit with what you have?.

Cheer Fryerning

Hello,
A few more clues that might be useful - When John Shaw and Mary Ann Higgs marry 8 Oct 1869 adult/adult it is a Church of Scotland ceremony in the home of Mr Seymour. Witnesses are Honora and Thomas Seymour. The children of John and Mary Ann are Phoebe Hull b. 26 Jan 1870 Deloraine, Jane Elizabeth b. 1 May 1871, Thomas William b. 10 Jan 1873, Victor William b. 10 Mar 1875 and Gordon Henry b. 28 Jul 1889.

John might be born in Scotland. The name Gordon suggests Scotland. Hull is probably a family name - maiden name of John or Mary Anne's mother?.

John Shaw d. 26 Mar 1917 age 71 yrs Launceston
Mary Ann Shaw d. 1911 age 66 yrs Launceston
These two people seem to be buried in the same site which would suggest they are your couple and that John was born ~ 1846 and married at age 23 years. Young couples often have a family member as witness ie brother, sister. So absence of, might suggest that John was in Tasmania by himself.

Cheers Fryerning

Re: Joseph McMahon - married twice

Hello,
Marriage record for Joseph McMahon and Frances Briggs 2 May 1849 Catholic Church 46/45 yrs is notated - formerly married in Church of England. So it would suggest same couple, second ceremony, different religion. Joseph is a sadler and the witnesses are Edward Jackson and Elizabeth Jackson.

Death notice in Launceston Examiner for Fanny McMahon 19 Jul 1874 - 69 years old, Longford, funeral to leave St Augustine's Church for The Sandhill at Launceston.

The body must have been taken by train for burial in Launceston. A Joseph McMahon died in Longford 24 Jun 1857, age 54yrs. That would match the age at marriage.

The Sandhill/Sand Hill was a residential area in Launceston
with a burial ground but I do not know if records exist. The undertaker was John Wright. Undertaker/cemetry records might show if they were buried together.

Cheers Fryerning
Thanks Freyerning - great info. Where did you find it? We had hit a total brick wall. How did you find his death and Mary Anne's death? We have as his children almost the same as you but we have Victor James b1875 d 1936 rather than Victor William. We also have Hector John Shaw b 1874 d 1915 at Gallipoli as a child - he is my husband's grandfather - hence the interest in John Shaw. Mary Anne's mother's name was Buckley, so maybe John's mother was Hull. We will investigate further now we have some dates. We also think that he was Scottish as the associated families were predominately Scottish and seemed to follow the Scottish Church quite closely. Thanks again. Would love to know how you found this and why we have a discrepancy as to his children.

Hate to be a terrible nuisance, but you seem to have access to records which I just can not find. In the same Shaw family line we are seeking info on JOHN THOMSON no birth or death info. no immigration info. Married GRACE PALMER NEE CRAW 1864 at James Craw's residence in Wellington Street Launceston. Independent ceremonies listed on marriage certificate. He is listed as a storeman.
John Thomson and Grace Craw had issue: Percy Ernest Thomson; Archibald Thomson; Eva Florence Thomson (my husband's great grandmother)
Grace Craw 1836-17/5/1886 baptised 8.7.1836 Presbyterian. Daughter of Walter Craw and Jane Robertson. Married Joseph Palmer 1851 in the Baptist Church Launceston. He is listed as carter. Issue Sarah Hane Palmer b.1852; Mary Anne Palmer b 1854; unnamed Palmer b 1857. Joseph Palmer died 1861.
Grace died of apoplexy in 1886 in York Street Launceston. Informant the undertaker, Storrer. She is listed as carpenter's wife.
I have searched on the site you steered us to for their death but can find no trace of either of their deaths. Think if I can get date of death and age maybe I can work back as you did for John Shaw. Love to know how he got to Tas. but have had absolutely no luck. Are you able to help again! We are unbelievably grateful as we have hit a 10 foot brick wall.

Hi Janet,I have too much information to put on a message board, photcopies of documents etc which i can email Michellejackson48@hotmail.com There is a decendent of Alice who works at the Tasmanian Archives in Hobart and she sent me so much info. I visited Hobart from Bendigo and met her and spent time at the archives. If you email me I can send you her email address rather than put it on a message board as not sure she would want me to do that.Edmund was born Thurles, Tipperary Ireland, 1818. Convicted March 1846, transported Tasmania August 1846 on the ship Auckland aged 28.Convicted assault and habitation. Married Julia Appleby (Applebee) 1855 (have photo church they married in).Julia, orphan (read vol 2 Barefoot and Pregnant from your library)
Julia was listed as 17 yrs on ships records but could have been only 14. Where did u get her year of birth as I have not been able to? Was in poorhouse Cork as orphan. Was free settler and worked for Reverand Doctor John lillie in Hobart before marrying Edmund. Both were Catholic, Edmund could read but not write, Julia could do neither. Edmund was not a nice person, had drink and woman problems. They separated and Julia took younger children back to Hobart but can find no further records of her.Older children brought up by family called O'Shea from memory,(will have to
check on that). My grt grandmother was Theressa and my grandmother,Jane was born Kingston 1887. She married John Stewart from Ilse Skye and moved to Wellington ,NZ had 12 children. I moved to Australia 1990 with family and started to research. Have photos of Alice and her family sent by Joyce from Archives, her relation also.
Hope that helps. Great records from archives but all A3 but can post or email or u can get from Joyce, Hobart. Keep in touch glad to help as much as I can.
Regards Michelle

Hi Janet, I do have quite a lot of info on Edmund (he was sometimes known as Edward) also some on Julia although she disappeared after her marriage broke up and some of her children were brought by another family.I have the ships they came out on and quite a lot of documentation of Edmunds crimes. Julia was one of the orphans from the potato famine who were brought out to Australia. Let me know how much you have and I will fill in the missing pieces such as I have. There is also a relation in Hobart who works for the archives who is related to Alice. I thought Alice married a Stapleton! Anyway I am happy to email you. Are you in Australia? Ryan is a common name and yours may not be the same family. I will; be happy to help in any way. Michelle
