he was Flakemore in 1841, Forknall in 1851, Faulknall in 1861, Faulkner in 1871 and Falknar in 1881.

m. as Faulkner in 1857 to Phebe Cross (widow)

Oh the joys of genealogy. because most people couldn't r&w, the census collectors pretty much recorded many misspelt names.

Maybe you are correct in the Job & John used the name Flakemore for a good few years.......they are a flakey lots.

A Mary Flakemore m. in 1853 in Dudley. Maybe they all changed their name......curious.

The newspaper report of the trial also gives John's age as 24.

It is interesting that Mary DUNN, the woman who was assaulted and robbed said of FLAKEMORE "I have known him eight or nine years". She didn't say anything about a different surname so perhaps he had been using that name for quite awhile.

It appears that Job was going by the surname FLAKEMORE on the 1841 census, and in 1851 he was FORKNALL!!

Debra

Hi Carolyn

All of what Debra says I believe is correct.

However, I believe that John Flakemore was born John Faulkner, son of James & Lucy. There were brothers Wm, Job & Eli and sister Mary.

Some of John Flakemore's children were also registered in Hobart as Faulkner (a mistake made by his wife Martha, who must have been aware of the name change).

John Flakemore also sponsored (paid for) the emigration of Wm Faulkner (son of James & Lucy) and his family to Tasmania in 1879 - some 180 pounds, and then in 1883 he sponsored the emigration of Wm's son - also Wm & his family. I think they would have been related for that kind of generousity. Wm senior & first family settle in the Franklin area.

John & Martha named their children - James, Lucy, Eli Wm, Mary etc.

The was a family legend that John changed his name at time of conviction after a "falling out" with a brother. Perhaps that is why no child was named Job. My grandmother always called the Faulkner children cousins! Descendants include the name Supplice.

John's DOB varies from 1823-1839 depends on which certificate/record you look at.

I have copies of the documents.

Regards, Maree
harriets.garden@bigpond.com
Hi Carolyn,

John FLAKEMORE's convict records are on the Tas Archives website. Of most interest is his indent which indicates that he was born around 1816 (aged 33), a native of Worcestershire and had a brother William and a sister Mary at Rowley (his native place).
http://portal.archives.tas.gov.au/menu.aspx?search=11

However I do note that on the 1851 census when he was on a prison hulk in Portsmouth harbour his age is given as 25.

There was a John FLAKEMORE who was baptised at Dudley in Worcestershire in 1812, the son of William and Elizabeth, and he did have a brother William and a sister Maria, so could be a possibility.

Debra
Does anyone know where John Flakemore Senior came from . I am looking to see birth certifcates electoral roll records etc when in England. I am chasing my line which is William Faulkner who lived in Franklin also. (he is most likely to have been Johns brother - note name change??) carolynwoolley1@bigpond.com

I also don't know where William and Hannah Faulkner are buried. I think Hannah went to stay at Cygnet with her daughter the Supplices.

Hi Rebecca,

The marriage cert will not give parents' names, this was not included until 1896. Witnesses' names may be of help though if she had family there and may also give ages. You also need to confirm that she was not a widow.

The birth certs of their children will also not give any info, parents' birth places were not included until 1902.

Margaret's death certificate should have parents' names and her birthplace if known by the informant.

Pre 1899 certificates in Tasmania are on microfilm and held by many libraries and family history societies in Australia, even in country areas.

Debra

Hi All And Thanks For Reading.

I Am Trying To Locate Information On Margaret MUNEGAN or MONEGAN (There Is Even More Spellings For The Surname). I Have Very Limited Information On Her So Will Be Greatful For Anything Anyone Is Willing To Share.

So Far I Have She Was Born About 1850 In Scotland. Her Father We Believe Is Edward MONEGAN. Margaret Went On To Marry James BARR In Hobart, Tasmania On 27th March 1873. She Passed Away 04th Nov 1921 At Cambridge, Tasmania. I Have Found This Record And Her Surname Is Spelt As MUNEGAN. They Had A Son Named Robert Lorimer BARR (My Great Grandfather) On 07th Feb 1882. There Is More Children, However Margaret's Surname Spelling Is Different For Most Of Them. No Idea When Or Why She Came To Tasmania Or Even Who With (If Anyone).

I Am Aware It's Possible Margaret's Birth Year And Place Could Be Wrong And I Am Not 100% Sure If I Have The Right Father's Name As That Was Information Was Given To Me.

I Would Really Like To Fill In The Missing Pieces For Margaret As She Seems To Be My New Brick Wall.

Thanks Heaps For Reading And Happy Searching To You All.
Rebecca

I first discovered the arrival records of Henry Cahllis and Mary ann Browning and their children (William, matilda & John) nearly three decades ago.

After following up William Henry and the ancestors of his parents in a few spurts of interest, I have rekindled my family history interest.

I am very keen to learn more of Matilda and John and would be very interested in communicating.

Hello, I am a descendant of George Emil Lange and Sarah Clements. I too had heard the stories of a child and wife before Sarah so read your post with great interest. However, he didnt die in Hobart. He left Sarah when my grandfather was very small and sailed away never to be seen again. Family legend suggests he ended up in New Zealand and married again there (seems he had a habit of doing this). Had you heard about this before or do you have information re this.
Well THAT certainly fixes a WEIRD problem i had!!

I could not figure out where Marjorie Elsie had come from (but she was in the death notice as a daughter). The "William Henry" came from my Uncle who did the family tree several years ago. He had the wrong william (and Mary, his wife) and it took me ages and common sense to sort that out.

If i read it right then Agnes Jane Lindsay BROWN (2nd wife was the sister of his daughter in law (Cecilia). I did for a moment think that and dismissed it as a dumb idea.

You help so much. NOW i can try to figure out where he came from. I had thought it would be harder to track the women in my family tree. Turns out not so much.

Thank you for all you help here. Much appreciated.

Thank you. Thank you. You are marvelous. It makes sense now. I can now try to find their (THORNE, GRIFFITH) arrival now that i know who i am looking for.

I found another relative who died while at that Asylum so i had done a little reading. There were a few online articles explaining what the place was used for (and the lives of poor girls kept there). It was thoroughly horrid. One article detailed two girls who escaped and went to the Governor and asked to be released and given proper work. He did!

I am getting quite a lovely collection of sites to use to find information. I am working toward doing as much as i can online before visiting various sites in order to sight original docs. Getting there :)

thank you again
William THORNE's burial record at Carr Villa in 1932 gives his age as 76, and his birth was registered at Longford,Tasmania in 1855, the son of William THORN(E) and Johannah GLEASON/GLEESON.

His sister Emma Jane was born in 1854 and married Henry SPURR in 1890 at Deloraine. She died in 1934 and I think her obit mentions William's son Edgar and his sons Clarence and Frank (E. C. and F.) ?? The 'G. Stagg' may be Mabel's son Gordon.

Burnie Advocate, Tuesday 7 August 1934, page 2

Late Mrs. E. J. Spurr.

On Sunday afternoon thc remains of the late Mrs. Emma Jane Spurr were interred in the Presbyterian section of the general cemetery. The late Mrs. Spurr was a tower of strength to the Presbyterian Church during her long residence in Deloraine, where she made many friends. Her husband pre deceased her some 18 months ago. She leaves two sons, Messrs. William and Lance Spurr, and a daughter, Miss A.Spurr. A third son, Mr. R. Spurr, is in West Australia.

.....the chief mourners were Messrs. W. and L. Spurr (sons), E., C. and F. Thorne, of Legana, and G. Stagg, of Meander (nephews).

I think that William and Emma were probably the only two siblings. There is a newspaper report about a Johanna THORNE who died in 1888 at the asylum in New Norfolk after accidentally drinking carbolic acid. The article says that she had been an inmate for 31 years. That would mean she was admitted about 1857, not long after William's birth. The report is quite long (Hobart Mercury, Monday 23 January 1888, page 2), and you can also obtain a copy of the inquest from Tas Archives (see their website inquest indexes).

Debra
Katrina if you go to the Tasmanian Archives website and have a look at the Will indexes there are two (at least) that are of interest.

Esther Jane BEAMS (maiden surname THORNE) died in 1959 aged 83. In her Will she mentions her grand niece and nephew with the surname STAGG, and I believe they are the grandchildren of Mabel Annie THORNE.

David GRIFFITHS died in 1922 and in his Will he leaves everything to his grand-daughter Esther Jane BEAMS, and he requests to be buried at Deloraine.

What I think has happened here is that Esther Jane was not the daughter of William THORNE, but was the daughter of Mary GRIFFITHS before their marriage, which makes David GRIFFITHS Mary's father. I think this is the birth reg. for Esther:

Esther Jane McNAMARA
Born: 27 Feb 1875
Father: Michael McNAMARA
Mother: Mary GRIFFITHS
Registered at Deloraine, Tasmania

There are no other births to this couple and no marriage that I can see.

Debra
