Robert Alexander Jeffrey

Hi all, I am tracing my husband's GG Grandfather Robert Alexander Jeffrey. He was married to Catherine Grady in 1844 and she passed away in 1896. I have found another marriage for a Robert Alexander Jeffrey to an Elisabeth Davis in 1897. He was 69 at the time and she was 70. Have also found a grave for Robert and Elisabeth, but none for Catherine. Would anyone out there doing research on either Robert or Elisabeth be able to confirm that this indeed my husband's Robert Jeffrey please and that this was his second marriage?? I am almost %100 convinced that it is the same Robert Jeffrey but if anyone could confirm this I would be most grateful. Thank you.

I’m looking for descendants of Ann Siggs through either of her two husbands, John Poke or William Lucas.

I don’t know much of Ann’s history before she arrived in Australia, but she would have been born about 1812, possibly in Sussex. She married John Poke in 1835 in Sussex and their son John was born in Sussex in 1836.

John Poke Jnr married Marianne Gale in Forest Tasmania on 14 Sep 1857.

In addition to John Jnr, Ann & John Poke had the following children in Australia

Marthann Poke – born Avoca Tas 19 March 1841 & married James Gale 25 August 1860 in Forest Tas

Luke Poke - born 15 June 1842 Westbury Tas & married Elizabeth Withnall in Horton Tas in 1869

Charlotte Poke – born 9 May 1844 Horton Tasmania & married David Blizzard 9 May 1866 Horton

William Poke – born 25 October 1846 Forest Tasmania & married Jane Ollington in 1869

Jabez Poke – born 29 July 1848 Forest Tasmania & married Jane Bisset(t) 18 October 1871 Horton Tasmania.

John Poke Senior was killed in an accident on 21 November 1848 and Ann married William Lucas on 9 October 1856 at Stanley.

Ann and William Lucas had three children

James Lucas - born 17 June 1852 Horton Tasmania & married Martha Charlotte Gardner

Albert Lucas - born 17 June 1852 Horton Tasmania & married Emlyn Ann Hill on 24 May 1877 at Ulverstone

Mary Louisa Lucas - born 14 January 1855 Horton Tasmania & married William Ollington 25 August 1875 Horton.

I am a descendant of Marthann Poke and James Gale.

I have a lot on the descendants from all her Poke children and Mary Louisa Lucas (though there are gaps), but the only information I have on the twins (James & Albert Lucas) is what I’ve found on birth, deaths & marriage records (only easily available up to 1919).

I would love to hear from any of Ann Siggs descendants to compare notes and to try to fill in the gaps.

Regards

Meg

Researching a James Hill who emigrated to Tasmania in 1842/1843 with his wife Lydia Kempsey. A son, William Frederick Hill, was born on board an unknown ship off the Tasmanian coast on 30 Nov 1842. The birth was registered at Longford (near Launceston) on 9 Jan 1843. Suspect other siblings in this family. James was a farmer around the Longford, Perth and Evandale outskirts of Launceston. Would be grateful for any information about this Hill family.

Can someone please help me to find out if my GG Grandfather was really born in Launceston. His name was George Henry Henningsen and I beleive he was born in the late 1890's. His mother was Anne Kirstine Neils (Neilsen) Henningsen. I have reason to believe that he may have been illegitimate. Can someone please do a look-up for me.
With many thanks
Tanya

Elizabeth Picken was born c.1845 in Hobart. Her parents were William Picken and Elizabeth Arnold. In 1863 Elizabeth Picken married Thomas Grigg at Maldon, Victoria. The marriage certificate states that William Picken was a miner, as were Thomas Grigg and his father William Grigg (both from Cornwall, England). The marriage certificate is signed by Elizabeth Picken and one of the witnesses is Amelia Picken.

Elizabeth and Thomas had 6 children in Victoria and then the family moved to Murrurundi, NSW where another 4 children were born.

If anyone knows anything about the Picken family in Tasmania I would be pleased to hear from them.

BEDGGOODS of Glamorgan

I have hit a brick wall with a cluster of details for the Bedggood family from the East Coast of Tasmania. I am hoping someone may be able to furnish information regarding the following:

1. Death details for Margaret BEDGGOOD(nee Mitchell) born circa 1825 (date of birth based on her admission to the Queens Orphan School on 2 Feb 1850, aged 5).
Margaret married Joseph Bedgood at the school house at Swansea on 28 Jun 1843. In addition to my g grandmother Martha, Joseph and Margaret had 10 children I know of*, they were;
Mary Ann born 1846
Hannah Marie born 1848
Margaret born 1850
Joseph born 1852
John born 1854
Thomas born 1855
Richard born 1856
Charles born 1858
Clarence born 1860
Alice born 16 Apr 1866
A web source gave Margaret's date of death as 17 May 1866(one month after the birth of daughter Alice) but Tas Archives was unable to find any record of Margaret's death and sent marriage cert 1885 for daughter Margaret.

*I am presently awaiting birth registration of several of these Bedggood siblings but at present can only confirm Mary Ann's birth date. The stated ages on the death certificates of Richard and Alice are consistent with the dates I have for these. I think it may be possible that youngest sister Alice may have been the daughter of Joseph's 2nd marriage.

2. Birth details for Martha BEDGGOOD. Martha married James Brown GILLIES in the house of Mr Bedgegood, Templestowe near Seymour, on the 22nd July 1867. Her marriage registration states she was a spinster aged "above 21". Martha died on 24th Nov 1902 at Seymour. Her headstone states her age as 58. A search by Tas Archives was unable to locate birth records for Martha for 1846/7 and registration for sister Mary Ann was sent instead.
On her death certificate her stated bithplace is given as Bicheno and her age is stated as 50; the informant was W.Rust, SI of Police Swansea .

3. Birth details for Ellen Laura (Nell) BEDGGOOD, half sister of Martha. Ellen married William THORNBURY at Queenstown in Jul 1899. Her marriage cert. gives her birth place as Seymour and names her parents as Joseph and Mary Ann BEDGGOOD. Her age is clearly stated as 33 but again a search by Tas Archives for 1866 was unsuccessful (not surprising as Alice Bedggood was apparently born in 1866).

I would also be interested if anyone has details of death or 2nd marriage for Ellen. She was widowed in 1909 when William THORNBURY was killed in a mine accident. She later remarried and lived in Valley Road Devonport from around 1920 til her death sometime after 1940s.

4. Lastly I would be interested in knowing details for the 2nd marriage of Joseph BEDGGOOD (1814-1880) to Mary Ann(Maria Annie). I believe Mary Ann's former surname was BERTRAM but I have not confirmed this.

Am trying to trace Mary Jane Slattery (b. 1863 Melbourne Vic ) & her sister Anastasia Mary Slattery (b. 1874 in Beechworth or Wodonga Vic). Parents were Patrick Slattery & Anastasia (nee Dillon), both from Limerick, Ireland. I have been told by an elderly family memeber that they became Nuns in Tasmania, but I am not sure when. I am trying to trace where they were in Tassie & when/where they passed away. I have traced their sister Bridget Mary (married Robert Somers Bell in 1884, passed away in Adelaide in 1946.

Hannah Bonney

My name iS Bob Starling and I am the family historian for the Youl family. I am trying to determine the ancestors of a Hannah Bonney who married an Ebenezer Youl at St Andrews Church Perth on 6/8/1850. I believe Hannah could be the daughter of Henry Bonney and Ann Lowe who married on 27/9/1822 with Hannah being born on 4//8/1825.

If my facts are correct, Hannah is the daughter of James Lowe and Mary Standley.

There is reference to these names on www.ayton.id.au/gary/genealogy/Lowes.htm web site.

I understand that Henry arrived on the Duke of Wellington on 1818 presumably as a free settler? Perhaps he was one of the regimental soldiers on this ship as it carried convicts.

The Westburyhistorical.org.au/Link%20to%20Chronologu.htm web site has a Henry Bonney as the District Constable and Pound Keeper. Are they the same persons?

Is there anybody out there that is able to confirm these facts and if so would you have any additional information on Bonney, Lowe and Standley families.

Ebenezer Youl was the youngest son of the Reverend John and Jane Youl. The Reverend was the first Anglican Chaplin appointed to Port Dalrymple and was responsible for the development of St. John's Church Launceston. Ebenezer was also the youngest brother of Sir James Arndell Youl who inherited the Youl Symmons Plains property from his father the Reverend and still remains in the family name. James Arndell was my Gggrandfather.

Ebenezer and Hannah moved to Yambuk Victoria where they became well established graziers.

Bob Starling
Youl Family Historian
Card Index at SAG has John Lankshear plus another person as an assisted emigrant to Van Diemen's Land with a grant of 20 pound. He is a brewer.
It is dated 1825 with 32 alongside which I suppose could refer to the 1832 migration scheme. Or might mean between those years.

I would love to know more about John but can find nothing else. Except in 1844 and 1845 a Mr Lankshire travels a couple of times between Port Phillip and Sydney.

------
Then another John Lankshear b1841 arrives c1858 or the mainland and gets bailed up in 1861 and married in 1863.

And of course there was Harriett Lankshear who arrived Hobart with Dr John Margetts and wife Mary (Lankshear) in 1823 - but my current request is for this card which says John Lankshear and a brewer
Thank You Ron

Since my original message I have found that Audrey Jessie May STANFORD was the mother of my grandmother. The Hobart Family History Society helped me. On my grandmother's birth certificate it stated she was Aubrey. I have found that Audrey's mother was Margaret Stanford whose parents were Richard Stanford and Bridget (nee Kelly) from Ireland. Margaret had sisters Ellen and Bridget born in Ireland and brothers Thomas and Patrick born in Tasmania. Ellen married a Mr Mackey. Does anyone have any further information on this family? Audrey was born in Tea Tree Tasmania in 1887.

I'm hoping someone might be able to help me untangle the knot of different Munday families in my tree...

My 3rd Great Grandmother was Emma Munday b. 17th April 1858
on the tasmania pioneer Index she is the daughter of John Munday and Eliza Phillips, the other children on the index to this couple are: Rebecca, Charlotte, Joseph, Edmund Jonas, John Henry, William and Eva Jeanette.
I cannot find the marriage of the parents.
I thought John Munday was the son of George Munday (convict) and his with Sarah Free, the only thing that seemed odd was that in other peoples family trees Eliza's year of birth was around 1819 and John's as 1829. Until I thought everything over again and realised that buried at St Marks, Pontville cemetery is Eliza d.1901 , John d. 1902 with daughter Charlotte d.1919 however in the Victorian Index John Munday son of George Munday and Sarah Free died in Guildford Victoria in 1911.
Added to this is that buried with Eliza, John and Charlotte is one of George and Sarah Munday's Great grandsons Alfred Oswell Munday.
John and Eliza on the trees that don't follow the George and Sarah Munday line seem to have extra children, however I am unable to find the births on the Index.
I've looked at a few possible ideas but I am hoping someone may have records that confirm links to what family my John Munday links into.
