Hello, My Great,Great,Great Grandfather, Charles Watson was born in Lancashire in 1797 and died in George Town Tas. in 1849. In 1827 he was convicted of receiving stolen goods and sentenced to 14 years transportation to Van Diemen's Land. He received a conditional pardon in 1834. During his time in Tasmania he was put to work overseeing the construction of 5 of the first 7 lighthouses in Tasmania, Cape Bruny Lighthouse among them. It is a long time since your enquiry was posted, so I hope that this information is still relevant. Pam

Thats interesting. My great great great grandfather was Patrick Harwood. He was married to Bridget Cohen. I know they lived at Bruny Island. Their transport records and marriage details are on Tasmanian Archives. There quite a few Harwoods, including my Great Grandfather in the Cohen crypt in Hobart. Did Patrick by chance marry twice?

The reply to your posting of over 10 years ago, is because a new fellow member of our Historical Society has just undertaken this research. The information that we had before this year was scant to say the least, which is why I flagged your request on to Sue to contact you. Hopefully the exchange will be mutually beneficial. One never know where the next vital clue will come from.

Thanks for responding to my message from over 10 years ago?

No, I don't derive from that union, I descend from his youngest brother, Charles William Gordon. William married Emily Elvina Young and they eventually ended up in Sydney. I have some details of their descendants , but would be interested to know what you have found.

I am also very interested to know whta you might have on James, the pilot, particularily how he fitted into the whole context of the pilot system. I have some info on his life as a pilot (and as captain of the govt schooners before). I have even been down to Tinderbox beach and found remains of iron rings in the rocks, which might have been the moorings for the pilot boats.

You possibly also know of the Young family on Bruny Island derived from William Young, the whaler. Emily's oldest sister, Elizabeth Rebecca married Thomas Mezger, and their daughter, Agnes Elizabeth, married Charles Gordon Hurburgh. The two sisters were born almost a generation apart, so this is not surprising. And just to further cement the family links, Charles' sister, Frances married James Henry Young.

Look forward to hearing from you again.

However, I have recently been in touch with another Smoothy who is a descendant of the Bruny Island John Smoothy. I will alert him to your posts.
All the best
Pauline Smoothy

Hi Kathy, Charles Watson is mentioned extensively in the book, From Dusk Till Dawn (a History of Australian Lighthouses) and I have several extracts from his trial together with petitions and references in his favour. He married Bridget Linnoir (the widow Barker) in Lancashire and his wife and children eventually joined him in Tasmania. A very interesting man. Pam

Thank you for the contact. This is not a name on any of our records, and I was fascinated that the birth certificate gave his birth place as Bruny Island. I checked our database, and early Church Records and can find no trace of him. You probably have this already but according to the TPI he was baptised on the date you give in Hobart [RGD32 4389/1854] to John Dale & Elizabeth ISLET. John [32]and Elizabeth [23] were married in Hobart 6 April 1841.It would appear they had a daughter Elizabeth who died 11 May 1842 Hobart. Two children [names not recorded] were born 5 July 1846 and 20 May 1847, and Jemima was born 20 May 1848, followed by Mary Anne 23 October 1852 - all in Hobart. Elijah married Catherine Annie/Annie Catherine 1 June 1876 Esperance and all 12 of their children were born Esperance, which is in the Channel area. I would suggest you try the Cygnet Museum cygnetmuseum@yahoo.com.au or the Channel Museum secretar@channelHeritageMuseum.org.au or their website http://www.channelheritagemuseum.org.au

I am sorry I wasn't able to help you further, but hopefully these links maybe able to. I wish you luck. Kathy

Hi Sue,

I think that I may be able to help with this old query. Ludwig Abrahams emigrated from Danzig (Gdansk) in about 1870 with his wife and small family. Albert and Augustus were two of his sons. The family had farms around Blessington but the parents moved to Bruny Island. Ludwig died in 1916 and is buried on Bruny Island alongside his wife. I dont have all the details here with me, but can fill you in a bit more.

Regards, Ian Anderson

Mike- Thank you for your response to my Bruny island families query. There has been quite a lot of work done on the Young family as they came to Bruny c1829 and were here until a few years ago. The person to contact is Margaret Wise at margiewise@bigpond.com as she is a descendant of this family and working on it at present. It would be a pity to duplicate all that research. Let her know that I passed you on to her re the Youngs. The Hurburgh connection sounds great. I shall look up what I have and get back to you.

My Young ancestors apparently lived on Bruny for a time - William Young and his family. There was some mention that he was a whaler.

Also my gguncle Rev. Walter Hurburgh was probably born there, and lived at Barnes Bay later in his life. He was the son of James Hurburgh, pilot at Pierson's Point from the late 1840's to 1879.

I have more biographical details on the Hurburghs, but nothing except the BDM data on the Youngs.

Thank you for your response to my posting 'Bruny Is. families' The Blyths leased a property known as 'Springfield' at Great Bay and later leased Partridge Is. off the coast of Bruny c1910.There were five boys in the family, and one girl, Doris. Olive Gray in his book 'Further recollections of North Bruny' refers to the father [the soon of Dr. Blyth] writing reams of poetry. As I personally live in Barnes Bay I would love to read the limerick and with your permission publish it in our local 'Bruny News' under your name of course. Any information on the family that you are willing to share would be greatly appreciated by the Bruny Island Historical Society. As per my posting, we are trying to put family trees together. Next time you visit Bruny please visit our History Room at Alonnah, open seven days a week for FREE. If you would like to place your family in the History Room it would be a great addition to the life of our pioneers. Your website is great and a credit to those who put it together.
Cheers!

Kathy on behalf of the Bruny Island Historical Society
