Dr Denis CANNY, Robe SA

Surnames: CANNY ATKINSON
Dr Denis Joseph Canny, my G-Grandfather, was the GP/Surgeon in Bega NSW for a few years and then in Robe SA for about 30 years until c1924. He then moved to Melbourne where he died aged 88 in 1928. A former military surgeon with the British Army in India (and elsewhere), he was born in Limerick Ireland 8 Apr 1840.

I have spent something like ten years seeking a photograph of Dr Canny, without luck. There are no family sources available to me that might help and I have been unable to locate anything via the web or on 2 separate visits to Robe itself. I had thought that the local doctor in a country town would have been prominent in local records, but I can find nothing.

I am concluding a major pictorial representation of my family as a present for my daughter's 40th birthday in September and am missing only 2 photographs ..... Dr Denis Joseph Canny and his wife Alice Maud (Atkinson) Canny. I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone that might be able to help or has any useful suggestions.

Thanks for reading.

Hi,
I have tried and so far not much although www.pictureaustralia.org have a collage of photo's presented to a Denis Canny 1917 in VIC. It lists him as Denis Canny Esq.

In the list of names of people in the photo there is a Denis J Canny...

I have no idea but it has a contact place..Maybe!!!

Hi Kellie ... I too found the Werribee coursing collage and had a brief moment of hope. Unfortunately it's not the right Denis J. Canny. My G-Grandfather was still comfortably ensconced in Robe in 1917 and didn't go to Melbourne until the 1920s. Thanks for trying though

I have always had excellent 'service' from the group. Have you tried snail mail?

Cheers

Aha ... apparently their email address has changed ... have re-sent my message to the new address. Maybe that'll work.

OK ... that did the trick. SEFHG answered my second email promptly and unfortunately confirmed my own experience .... no pictures anywhere. Looks like my pictorial version of the family tree will have a couple of "holes" in it.

Oh well ... the search goes on. Thanks for your help

I've had a little look around for you as I live about an hour from Robe and was intrigued. No photo, there must be one somewhere! I've only come across the Census record in 1905 and the marriages of daughter Margaret Eleanor and Marie Mostyn. As you know, Margaret married Samuel Walker Chettle. Have attached a photo of him in 1907 just in case you don't have it. He is standing far right.
Let me know if there is anything you may want, be glad to help.

Good luck!
