I have done some research in the Adelaide Archives, but living in the outback doesn't always help my cause!
I'm looking for information on how the following people came to SA:
Daniel Dineen (B 1810? Co Cork IRE) married Catherine Connelly (IRE) and came to Australia - how?
Daniel & Catherine's son Daniel (b 1839 IRE) married Mary O'Mahoney (IRE) and came to Australia - how? He must have come by 1862.
Daniel & Mary's son Daniel Joseph was apparently born 24-12-1864 or 1865 in Beltana, SA - birth record unable to be found - any leads? Daniel died 17-10-1931 - Where?
These next bits have to do with the whole Dineen/Heading family tree:
Aileen Patricia Dineen (b 17 or 19/5/1920) - died?
Her husband, Walter John Heading b abt 1925 Hectorville. Died?
James Jenkins & his wife- b,d,m? Had daughter Myra Myrtle b Port Adelaide 1887.
Martha Ann Loman's (b 27/7/1851)parents?
Parents of Anne "Nellie" Noble b 12/1/1889 Payneham
Death of Walter Thomas Heading b 4/8/1887 Campbelltown
And how did these people come to SA:

I was in the Mortlock Library (Adelaide) yesterday and had a look for answers to some of the queries you asked. Unfortunately I did not find an answer to every request, but the following is what I did manage to find:-

ARRIVAL FROM OVERSEAS.

Daniel Dineen, labourer from Co. Cork aged 40yrs, and wife, Catherine aged 35yrs and son, possibly James (writing very poor on original passenger list) aged 4 years arrived in South Australia 3rd April 1858 aboard the "Nugget".

I could not find an arrival of Daniel and Mary nee O'Mahoney pre 1862.

Our death records only go from 1842-1915. Therefore I was unable to find a death record for Aileen Patricia Dineen in 1920, or Aileen's husband, Walter John Heading c1925.

ARRIVAL FROM OVERSEAS.

William Heading, farm labourer from Cambridge, aged 29yrs, married, wife Lucy aged 24yrs, son William aged 5 years, George, son aged 2 years arrived in South Australia aboard the "Joseph Rowan" which arrived in South Australia 18th June 1854, and sailed from Liverpool.

Aboard the same ship were also:-

William Heading, farm labourer and ploughman, of Cambridge aged 42yrs, wife Ann aged 38yrs, William aged 1 years, John aged 8 years, Simon aged 5 years, Charles aged 3 years, Betsy, domestic servant aged 18yrs, Anne, domestic servant aged 16yrs, domestic servant.

BIRTH.

The only child born to Henry Lomman and Martha nee Strong in our birth records 1842-1906 was:-

Harry Lomman born in 1858.

ANN BROOKS.

I did everything I could to record the arrival of Ann Brookes. Our arrival records are actually photocopies of the ORIGINAL passenger lists which were supposedly handed in to the Gov. of the day upon a ship's arrival. Needless to say a large no. of passenger lists were never passed on. However, we do have quite a large range of passenger lists, and the index quite clearly shows an arrival of an Ann BROOKS. Unfortunately when I opened the passenger list book to look up the details on Ann, the writing was so pale it was absolutely impossible for me to decipher the writing.

Nellie Noble born 12th January 1889 to William Noble and Alice Jane Gray at Marden, District Norwood. reference book 431 page 158

William Noble born 1854 in Adelaide, married 26th November 1877 at Woodforde South Australia to Alice Jane Gray.

Thank you very much for the lovely response. My husband is about the only person who gives me such compliments on a regular basis!!, although my daughter often does as well.

I just love doing lookups for people. I go to the library here in Adelaide every Friday, send the Saturday and Sunday sending off information to people, and then by Monday I'm raring to go back to the library. I'd call that "genealogy addiction". But I can excuse that because, as a Salvation Army Chaplain, I can't get addicted to alcohol or cigarettes, so I guess geneology is close enough!!

I live in England, the son of an Australian mother. My mother, Jessie Anderson SOUTH, born in Port Pirie and also, like many in the family lived in Adelaide. The SOUTHs arrived in SAinin 1840 on the "Lysander". I have built a good SOUTH pedigree, but there are always missed 'branches'. If there are any descendants of this family who are not in touch with me I would like to hear from them.
I have now returned to researching my mother's mother's family, the ANDERSONS from Scotland who arrived S.A. 1839 on the "Delhi". First settling land they called "Burnside" --is this the present town of Burnside? descendants lived/farmed Morphett Vale, McLaren Vale, Bald Hills, Yankavilla, Kangaroo Island, and many other names south of Adelaide. My geographic and especially the historical knowledgeof the area is zero, and I do need to know both to be able to appreciate this game of genealogy, otherwise all I have collected are hundreds/thousands of dates and 'unknown' places. I have looked for a site/sites on the internet about the history of some of these places, but my findings to date are nil. Where do I start? I am not in touch with any descendants of the original settlers, James Anderson (b.1765) and his wife, Grizel AITCHISON, and would be pleased to hear from any.

Whilst I am not a relative of yours I do live in South Australia so I may be of some assistance.
There is no town called Burnside, however it is a suburb on the Eastern side of Adelaide. It seems that your ancestors lived mainly south of Adelaide, as the suburb/towns of McLaren Vale, Morphett Vale, Bald Hills, Yankalilla and Kangaroo Island are all south of Adelaide. By doing a search on these places you should be able to find information. Or contact their local government/council.

I started off on the wrong foot, as I recorded information about a Thomas South & family who applied for a free passage to South Australia, arrived here and are listed in the 1841 census of South Australia, which was the very first Census in South Australia. However, your mention of Jessie Anderson South put me on the right path, but unfortunately, before I managed to find information re Alfred Edward South & Margaret Annetta Anderson, I had very little time to look up information on them. ARRIVAL IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA.

The "Delhi" was a 3 mast ship built in 1835 at Whitby. It was owned by J. Worral, and registered in Liverpool. The "Delhi" arrived in South Australia 20th December 1839 ex Liverpool. The ship's Captain was Captain Samuel Herbert.

I am willing to see if I can find the "Anderson" family on the passenger list of the "Delhi" but in order to do that, I need some Christian names.

'PORT Pirie' From "Manning's Place Names of South Australia", page 250

PORT Pirie.

The port was named by Glovernor Robe after Sir John Pirie, an original director of the South Australian Company, the owner of the 'John Pirie', the first ship to enter the port which it did in response to a request by pastoralists for transport of sheep in 1845, according to T.R. Bowman, joint lessee of the Crystal Brook Run.

Its Aboriginal name was "tarparrie" - meaning muddy creek. Prior to closer settlement it was known as Samuel's Creek; probably a reference to Samuel Germein (`1818-1886), a mariner who came to the colony in 1837.

The Government Town of Port Pirie was surveyed in December 1871 on land originally held by Messrs William Younghusband and Peter Ferguson under occupation licence. It was first offered for sale on 6th June 1872.

I am hoping to get into the library again on Friday of next week (it's my day off) and I'll try to find more information re your mother and her parents and siblings. If you can come up with a Christian name or two of the Andersons I'm happy to look for them as well.

I'm in Adelaide South Australia and for 12 years now I have been doing free research for people all over the world who want information about ancestors/family who came to South Australia in the 1800's.

I saw your request regarding William South and family, so I decided to see if I could find some information for you regarding that family when I was in the South Aus. State Library a few days ago. The following is what I did manage to find, albeit not a lot.

ARRIVAL FROM OVERSEAS.

William South, wife Mary nee Govus and children (1) Mary Ann, (2) Alfred (3) thomas henry arrived in South Australia abord the "Lydnader" which sailed from London via Plymouth 29th May 1840, and arrived in South Australia 6th September 1840.

The original Anderson Settlers were James Anderson and wife Grizel Aitchison.

ARRIVAL FROM OVERSEAS.

James Anderson and daughters (1) Sarah and (2) Barbara arrive in South Australia 20th December 1839 aboard the "Delhi" which sailed from Liverpool.

The word "Mindiyarra" is the name of a railway station 8km north-west of Karoonda. It is a aboriginal word for "plenty"

I saw your request on the Message Boards regarding the Anderson family coming to South Australia. I have some little information about the town of Burnside which still exists, and has grown, here in Adelaide. The following is what I did find:-

PETER Anderson

"Bunside". Peter Anderson born 1808 in Scotland and died 1880 in south Australia.

peter arrived in South Australia in 1839 aboard the "Delhi", with a 'lettr of introduction' of Sir James Fergusson of Archerfield Scotland.

Peter had a land grant and selected a block with the Second Creek running through it. He built himself a house.

Peter than named the area "Burnside".

This information comes from "Manning's Place Names of South Australia" page 57.

This is one of the most respected book of its type in South Australia.

Many,, many years later, Burnside, (still in South Australia) is a very respectful suburn, with many of the wealthy sect living there. It is a lovely looking area with lots of treet etc. all around.
