1875 journey London - Maryborough

Hi hope someone can help me.

I am trying to find out more information about ancestors who travelled to Maryborough in 1875 on the TIM WHIFFLER ship, they left London on 6th Mar 1875 & arrived in Australia on 16th Jun 1875....film M1697.

Their names were:
Zante Claude Bell (on the list he is Zante E, Cs & Es can look similar when transcribing)
Frank Bell aged 17
Stuart (Stewart) Bell

Frank was the eldest traveller at 17. Estimated age for Zante is 14 & Stuart 16.

They were young to be travelling on their own, maybe they were travelling an Uncle or friend not given with the surname Bell.

Their parents were Richard & Caroline Bell, Richard an Architect. Not sure if they went across.

If anybody can help me find out a bit more that would be fantastic.

Many thanks - Sadie

Hi Sadie

Were these boys born in Surrey by any chance? Or Sussex? Specifically in Reigate. Also do you know if Caroline's maiden name was Adams? If so I have found 2 of the 3.

Let me know and if so I will send you marriages, deaths and children for Frank and Stuart.

Cheers.
Cherilyn

How fantastic - thank you, thank you, thank you.

Yes Caroline was Adams & the children were born in Reigate Surrey. The family moved to Hackney inb later censuses.

This is brilliant, do you know who they were travelling with when they went across in 1875?

Thank you again,
Sadie

Hi Sadie,
My relatives arrived in Maryborough aboard the Tim Whiffler arriving 16 June 1875. Unfortunately they were the Turner clan and not Bell. However, and please forgive me if you already know this, but I would definitely check with the lovely people at the Maryborough Historical Society - Family Genealogy group. I understand that there is a reunion being organized for the descendent passengers of the Tim Whiffler's 1874 arrival ...and there were only two transits before she sunk.

The Historical Society have also put together an inexpensive booklet on the Tim Whiffler. I recall it has full passenger lists for both journeys but primarily relates to the ship's first (1874) voyage. Of real interest is a partial account by a passenger of the voyage from UK to Maryborough and some insights into the thoughts and feelings of that immigrant...The booklet is also available in the John Oxley Library in Brisbane.

Having grown up in Maryborough I can also confirm that there are a great many 'Bell' around. Indeed I actually lived in Bell Street on the Bell Hilltop estate. I would be confident that there would be those in the Society who might be able to point you in the right direction...

Hope this helps you in some small way on your quest!

Cheers
Glenys

Hi Glenys

Thank you for your lovely message and very useful information. I did not know the information you shared and will try to get in touch with the Maryborough Society, the booklet sounds very interesting.

I live in the UK, however do have Bell family living in Perth, but they went across from the UK 30rs ago although a descendant not from the Tim Whiffler ship that arrived.I had no idea she had sunk.

Thank you again
Sadie

Hi Sadie,
I did not realise you live in the UK. Given this I would imagine it may be more difficult for you to access the little publication I mentioned. I am happy to try to access a copy & either post or scan to you. Watch this space.... Regards Glenys Smith nee Turner

I am from th4e Maryborough Family Heritage Institute and we are putting on the Immigration Celebrations for the Tim Whiffler and doing both the 1874 and 1875 voyages. I am compiling a book on it but unfortunately only found this on the internet today and the book is almost ready for print. The Immigration Celebrations is on 17th and18th May so thee is little time to d anything much. However if any of you would like to write to the Institute after the event if you cannot come to it, the book will be available for purchase. Contact heritageresearch@bigpond.com.au
If someone could quickly send me a short history of the family I might be able to squeeze it in the book.
