I found an Edward Brown funeral notice in the Ryerson Index for 1877 and another for 1879.
Prim Goodrich's parents were Browns and they are buried at Warroo in Lone Graves.
Their names were Edith Mary BROWN died 23 Feb 1953 and Peter Urquhart BROWN died 27 May 1972. Peter worked as a nurseryman on "Hollybank" stn and later on "Warroo" Stn.

Probably doesn't help you much.
Regards
Joyce Bryant

I appreciate your help Joyce. I've ordered her death certificate, so I'm hoping that will shed some light on her ancestry. And give me a lead to go on. Cheers Chris

Hi Joyce,
I've finally received Rosa Brown's death certificate. ( it took quite a while from QLD BDM). Unfortunately, it doesn't shed much light on her. Her parents are listed as 'unknown', her place of birth is London and the time in the colonies is 24 years in QLD & NSW.
She had a further 7 children with Edward Brown. This is their ages when she died:
Mary aged 15 years
Edward 12
William 10
John 7
Thomas 3
and 2 deceased males.

The informant is listed as Edward Rheese (?) a contractor. Interestingly, the extract states that he had 'been cohabitating with the deceased'. I wonder if her husband Edward Brown is deceased at this stage??
I am having trouble locating any information on any of the children.

Any help would be great
Thanks Chris

Hi Chris,

Edward RHEESE was tried and found not guilty of the manslaughter of Rosa. I cannot find more details but I would hazard a guess that he failed provide her with medical assistance - I have seen similar cases reported. Queensland archives do have some documents which you can purchase and which may provide more info. What was her cause of death?

Do you have the UNDERWOOD/BROWN marriage cert? Where does Rosa Jnr. say she was born? Do her named parents match those given when she died? Death certs can be very unreliable. Being underage she would have needed permission to marry, is it noted who gave that permission? Who were the witnesses?

In my opinion the "Edward BROWN" named as her father was actually Edward RHEESE. The informant at the time of her death may have only known of Edward and even Rosa herself may not have known who her natural father was.

Does Rosa Snr's death cert record her maiden surname as MORRIS? That may not be correct either.

There was a jockey named William RHEESE who died in 1899 from injuries received in a race at Randwick. I do not have access to the inquest details on Ancestry but he was aged 33 and his parents' names on the NSW death registration are given as Edward H. and Rosa so that might be worth further investigation.
