That's very kind. I know that John was born in Guilsfield, Montgomeryshire c. 1888 and that Charles was 10 years older. Another clue I found was the address Rosevale, Eton North, where John was living in 1965. hope you have some success.

Hi Ian,

I've just made some enquiries but will have to wait for a reply/replies before I can proceed.
I found a John Jones died 1967 aged 67 years so he's from the right birth date time. If he's your John he married the daughter of a cane farmer who was born in Eton.
Fingers crossed but no guarantees. Jones in a very common name!

Cheers
Marilyn

Marilyn, how could you! As John's sister might have said... popular, yes; common, never. Unless of course you've met the convict Joneses, the beer-drinking Joneses, the motor-mad Joneses etc :)

Ha ha. Okay - popular - widely used - established - frequent? I must remember that when speaking about popular names in future.
Still waiting to hear back from the people I've contacted. I don't want to jump the gun and send you up the proverbial garden path.
:)
By the way I assume you have photos of your grandmother and uncles etc.? Would you recognize a photo of him do you think?

Hi Ian,

I still haven't heard back from the couple of people I emailed via Ancestry so will pass on what I've found so you can try and chase it up. This MAY not be your uncle as Jones is such a popular name :)
I found a grave for a John Jones buried Mackay who fits your uncle born circa 1888 died 21 Feb 1967.

If that link doesn't work you can go to the home page and look under Church of England Section A-L here -

This John married Mary Theresa Ironside b. 9 May 1897 d. 10 August 1943 and married a John Jones 1917. Her father, George, was born in Eton and was a farmer. If you enter those dates into a search look at the family Wollaston-Noonan family tree. They have his DOB as 26 Aug 1887 - no place. And they have a photo of him where you may see family similarties? No parents are noted for him in any tree unfortunately. Perhaps you'd like to email them and tell them what you know? There are also some private trees you may be able to contact.
If they don't know then you may be able find out if he's yours is buying a marriage cert. Or looking in historical papers for details of his marriage.
I also had a quick look at trove.nla.gov.au which has old online newspapers - no luck but you may be able to find something.

Let me know how it goes.
Cheers
Marilyn

Struth, Sheila, I think you hit gold first time. I remember that Great-Uncle John had married a local girl and she was referred to as Tira. I remembered that because my brother, Graham, married Sotira and she is known as Tira. Spooky, eh? How or why Mary Theresa became Tera May I guess we won't find out. I was not able to check the Wollaston-Noonan family tree on line but I'll give it a go again in a couple of days time.Thank you very much for your help. In turn I'd be delighted to offer what I know to any seekers of Jones family history.x Ian
PS I know you are not really a Sheils but I was trying out a new language and we all make mistakes. :)
