Would sks know what proof was required that a couple were married when they acquired a birth certificate for their child in Queensland between 1877 & 1900? I guess today a Marriage Certificate is required, but I am wondering if during this time a couple could simply say they were married if they could not produce any document. The family were miners, and moved around a fair bit, so they couldn't rely on someone in authority to vouch for what they said.
I have a case where the marriage in Brisbane in 1877 is stated on each of the 9 children's birth certificates, and yet it is not listed with the QLD BDM.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated. I've already guessed that they may have been married under different names, but would appreciate any other thoughts.
