My ggrandfather Amasa Colby deserted the whaler Charles W. Morgan at Horn Island in June of 1851. The next information I have on him is that he is in San Francisco California USA in 1852. Does anyone have any idea how I might be able to track his tracks out of Australia? I understand that if deserters were caught, they were imprisoned. The time frame seems to indicate he was not caught, but who knows. Maybe he talked himself out of prison.... Thanks for any suggestions!
