Surnames: Hurley, Sam, Sams
I am seeking information on Bridget Hurley, born Qld 1880 (1880/C5152), daughter of Daniel Hurley and Catherine Dwyer. She appears with family members on the electoral rolls for Rockhampton in 1903/05. I have all required details of the rest of her family, but would like to be able to trace Bridget.

I have found no other trees with further information.

There is a possibility that this marriage may be hers: QLD BDM 1909/C2321, William Yapp Sam m. Mary Bridget Hurley 20/01/1909. I have found no record of this couple after this.

The only other definite record of WYS I have found is that a William Yap Sam jnr bought 8 blocks of land at Broadmount (mouth of the Fitzroy River) in 1899 (Trove).

There are some 'Sam' burials in South Rockhampton, but none seem to fit.

North Rockhampton cemetery has William Sams d 25/11/1930, age 39, in RC section. Other details from Trove indicate that he was a gardener, from Thangool, half-Chinese, in court for sly grog selling in 1928, died in his car on the Emu Park road after falling asleep at the wheel, age 40, died intestate. BDM gives parents as James and Jane. If age is correct, he is unlikely to have been buying land in 1899.

Also BDM for: Willie Sams, born c1845 China, died 16/11/1931.

I'm interested to find out more, but the relationship is too distant to justify buying certificates. Any information or suggestions welcome.

Thanks
Veronica

Hi, Perhaps we can help each other a little. After years of searching, today I had a hint on my 2nd great aunt. Born Catherine Jane Ping, daughter of Ellen Man and Sam Ping.

She married James Sam (s) The William you mention is a 2nd cousin. He was a shearer, and was returning married 1928 on the Darling Downs he was a shearer.

The Chinese names are a real problem with searching. Hope to hear back from you Kris

Update: after reading this reply, I succumbed to the temptation to buy a marriage record.

Unfortunately, it shows there is no connection with the Bridget Hurley I was looking for when I posted that message. At least now I know.

Details from the certificate are as follows:

St Paul's C of E, Rockhampton, 20 Jan 1909.

Sam, William Yapp, bachelor, born Bundaberg, 25, parents Yapp Sam, miner, and Bertha Collard.

Hurley, Mary Bridget, widow, born Rockhampton, 23, parents Thomas Bowthorpe, miner, and Bridget Dwyer.

Following on from that, a quick scan of Qld BDM shows:

Nothing that appears to be a birth record for William, or any record for Bertha.

Mary Bowthorpe b 1885, parents Thomas Bowthorpe, Bridget Dwyer.

Mary Bridget Bowthorpe m John Thomas Hurley in 1907.

John Thomas Hurley d. 1908, parents Simon Hurley, Anne O'Rourke.

William and Mary Bridget Yepp appear on the census for Mt Chalmers until 1958 - William was a gold miner.

William Samuel Yeates (!) d 17/7/1964, parents Samuel, Bertha Collard.

Mary Yepps d 1972, parents Thomas Bowthorpe, Bridget Dwyer.

Yap Sam d 05/07/1885, parents Nelson Collard, Louisa Ash (probable this is Bertha).

Yap Sam Yap Sam d 10/01/1901 father Yap Sam. Connection?

Hope this helps.

Thank you for that, I had found a spare Mary Sam out in Barcaldine with one of William's sisters, I had thought that it might be one of yours but now I can try to see if this Sam family are related to my Sam family. Hope you find Mary!
