Classification: Query
Surnames: Various surnames from Coen area of North Qld including station owners/managers, police and telegraph station workers
I went to Qld State Archives recently following up files and records for my g granddfather who was a policeman in Cooktown and then Laura, Musgrave and Coen. One of the records I copied was a petition signed by the following: a number of Watsons (from Batavia and Merluna stations), Kennedy (from York Downs), John Wilkin? Proprietor of Mein; Nichols of Vine Torr; C. Holt? of Meta Downs; Thompson of Meta Downs; various people from Mein, Morton and McDonnell Telegraph Stations. The petition was written in July 1888 and was a protest about the proposed movement of the police to Patterson. It notes the Jardine River is 28 miles south of the proposed police site and that the site is too far to be useful for landowners.

I have another letter by a Constable HJ or AJ Symes (No. 350) of Coen NMP Camp which mentions a Constable Doherty and John Ross (may have been from Port Stewart - he was to deliver building material from there for a police camp). I have a sepatrate letter from my g grandfather which mentions these people as well.

I have a copy of a letter of around September 1899 from Mr U Le Park??? who was the Inspector of Works for Cook and Carpenteria Districts.

I have a report on an inspection by Inspector Marston of the Coen NMP. It mentions my g grandfather plus Constable Barnes and Derry.

If anybody has an interest in Coen, I have a letter about the location of Coen Police Station and the difficulties in reaching it from Coen town proper. My g grandfather, the senior sergeant at Coen NMP also confirms this in a report dated 1 March 1909 where he describes the location of various buildings in town and the difficulty of people getting to the Police station.

I have a return of the strength and distribution of police at Coen and Ebagoolah which mentions the following names: Whiteford, O'Grady, Shannon, O'Regan and Howard. It also mentions the names of the trackers including Captain, Monday, Euro, Jimmy, Paddy and Tommy.

I have a page describing the accommodation and ancillary buildings at Ebagoolah, Coen NMP Camp, Coen NP Barracks and Coen Township.

If anyone has an interest in any of these names or of Coen itself, I can scan the copies and send to you.
